I just bought a new digital camera so I took some pics of my Yamato Do...

The Do pictured I found is actually 12 years old...It appears that I bought it in 1991 and it has been through thousands of practices and is ready for a couple thousand more...although it is worn and the Mune is old-school, structurally it is still sound...

I think for hard practices, Yamato Do is ideal...It gives you effective protection and you won't have to worry about it getting damaged...Whereas, with a Bamboo Do, you always worry if it will get scratched especially if your opponent is using a Carbon Shinai.

One More Pic...Here is the Inside View...I had to crop it quite substantially because of the image restrictions on this board...

For those who NEED (I stress need) the higher resolution pics, please send me a PM.

Cool...i just bought a digital camera too. Hopefully i can post up some pics by the end of the day. My bogu looks very similar though. I guess my bogu might be yamato after all!

I think I recognize one of those scuff marks from being run over during practice. :cross_eye

Ok, i got the pics uploaded. Is this a Yamato Do? It's very similar to matsuda sensei's do except the mune design is a tad different and the inside part of the do is black.

Oh and about my bogu. I've only had it for 3 years so it looks fairly new.

Is this one piece or 50 pieces? There are some bogus offered with "50 piece plastic Do".. Just wondering..

This is 50 pieces. Whether or not it's a "50 piece plastic Do" or a Yamato Do is anyone's guess. I have NO idea what the differences are between the two.

Andoy,

Just by looking at the picture, it's hard to say if it is a Yamato Do...there are also a lot of people in my dojo with a Do just like yours with the inside part black.

I think they have the "50 Bamboo Look-a-Like" Do from e-bogu so by the pic it might be one of those types...

I ordered a Yamato do from Bogubag.com and the inside is black just like Andoy's.
So it is possible that it could be a Yamato do

What's the definition of "Yamato" do? Is it any different than 50-piece Plastic do?

I don't think there's really a such thing as a "50-piece" plastic doh. All Yamato doh's are one-piece molded plastic. For the cheaper Yamato doh's, the inside is smooth. For the more expensive ones, there are molded lines on the inside to simulate the look of bamboo slats. Since it's almost impossible to tell a bamboo and a Yamato doh apart from the outside, the molded line on the inside also makes it impossible to tell the two apart from the inside.

Your idea of a doh constructed in the tradional manner with individual plastic slats doesn't exist. Suc a doh will be labor-intensive to produce, and I highly doubt that it could absorb the shock well.

My friend has a fiber doh. It's a lot lighter than my Yamato doh, and the two are of the same size. I dare not go pick up my sensei's bamboo doh, but I'm fairly sure it'd be heavier still than mine. I think the weight is the only way to tell them apart now.

If you flip the top layer of inside Do - you can see uncolored portion of Do material and can see if it's plastic or Bamboo. I always thought my old Do was Yamato do ( bought from my sensei for $1,000 6-7 years ago ) but I found out it was actually 40 piece Bamboo by doing that..

No, the whole set. I think it's Japan made gunome 3mm. Never needed to break-in. In fact, the day I received the set I had a promotion test in it and passed the test. But it wasn't as durable as I wanted. End up buying another set this year. Good deal from Korea ( $1,100 hand made 1.2 bu set with 60 piece bamboo do )
