I dont know wether he is considered unhealthy or not?
In Europe his parents would be advised by a GP that he needs to lose weight etc Would Japanese parents encourage kids to put on weight to do sumo?
I also see other skinny-ish kids. To fight someone with more body mass requires more strenght (cunning also etc), but young kids shouldnt overdevelop their muscles, is there an excuse then to just eat more and put on more weight?

In the newspaper here recently they showed a scan of the internal body fat of people. This is the fat around the internal organs, that is the 'dangerous' fat that can cause health problems. The skinny guy that did no exercise had a lot of this, whereas the fatter guy had hardly any. It was mentioned that sumo wrestlers actually have a very low proportion of internal fat, due to the work they put in.
So I would suggest that a western kid (or japanese etc) that sits at home and watches tv all day should be trying to lose weight, or exercise more, but a kid learning sumo, or indeed any other exercise regularly does not have a problem. It is the internal fat which counts, this comes from not exercising.

True, true. Nothing like being a fat thin guy. I know quite a few of those. Skinny, but a Krispy Kreme away from a heart attack. Incidentally though, after retiring, most sumo wrestlers are required to lose the bulk since it does end up putting excess pressure on the heart, liver and kidneys. Many of the Japanese players tend to, Takanohana as an example is a beanpole now (in the purple mawashi before and in black kimono after) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AcFVzMVEF5c
Meanwhile Kotooshu, the Bulgarian is 6'8" and 340lbs started off lean in the beginning of his career, but seems to have been bulking up over the last 2 years.

My dad told me that despite being super massive fatties, sumo dudes get all the chicks 'cause they usually end up pretty rich (since sumo is really popular, they get a big income, etc). Plus they usually die in their 30s, leaving all the moneys behind for the widow.
