...how to know the right length and diameter of the jo ...

Indeed, as there is not one standard. It varies with what you are doing, so best to ask your teacher. Folks doing aiki-jo -tend- to arrive at a length based on body size, whereas koryu curricula -tend- to use dimensions standard to the school. Naturally, I've seen exceptions in both settings.

Sorry John but if our friend here is referring to Seitei, unlike the koryu, the length and diametre are very strict. Was talking to a sempai about just this the other night but neither of us could remember what it was... Will ask the sensei and get back to you if noone else does in the meantime.

Jo length: 128cm (4Shaku 2Sun 1Bu)
Jo diameter: 2.4cm (8Bu)

This is straight from the ZNKR Jodo Manual.

And do you wear it all the time or only on special occasions ? I haven't noticed it getting in the way of your iaido, especially in seiza.

I usually coil it up - a bit like a fire hose really:smoker:

The 128cm length is right for the Zenkenren jodo division, and Shinto Muso ryu jodo. Shorter people are allowed to shorten their jo, because their armspan simply isn't enough to reach end to end on a standard jo, which is required to manipulate the jo.

Some koryu styles use a 4 shaku (121cm) or 5 shaku (151.5cm) jo, while a bo is typically 6 shaku (181.8 cm). A judo jo is 3 shaku (~91cm).

How do I know with such precision?
I have a calculator - shaku to inches or cm.
www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Pagoda/8187/Script.htm

Some koryu measure from the armpit, with the opposite hand inserted; the jo reaches from floor to palm of the hand.

And the jo should be made of a non-separating wood like white oak, not red oak. Many dojo in Japan will not let you practice contact with jo or bokken of red oak , which tends to break cleanly (resulting in pieces flying about) rather than splinter but hold together.

Cheers,

One man's jo is another hanbo, whatever... For judo, ask the Kodokan, I just try to keep my pile of clubs straight.

Same as 'bo' for some is always 6shaku, but others specify rokushakubo, I guess.

Or another mans Tanjo which holds the exact same measurements..(these days anyways) :D

I might be totally wrong but I think I've heard once that Niten ichi-ryu uses Go-shaku-BO (151,5 cm). Can anyone confirm if this is so or have this changed with the new soke or something... Is this off-topic? Maybe I should go to Kobudo-forum or E-budo with my questions.
