View Full Version : Kiai outside of the dojo

I'm playing volleyball today in my gym class and I decided I wanted to kiai while hitting the ball but I didn't have the feeling for it to come out. It seems I can only do it in the dojo, what am I doing wrong?

because you feel naked without your bogu...

just the atmopshere - not the same. in kendo there is a VERY competitive feeling to win (and get the other guy) whereas in volleyball, you would only scare the little hell out of your team-mates.

when you are jumping the ball, a loud "MINE!" (I played volleyball too at high school) would be fine.

because you sound like a twit when you do. In the dojo, everyone is making sounds like a twit, which makes it appropriate.

But I like to make loud noises all the time, why can't I kiai in gym?

Is Kiai something to be ashamed of? Why would you compare the two?

Strange that you posted this in the "flames" section which I'd normally ignore...
unless it's just some specially twisted MSPaintClock humor.

I can't tell if you're looking for a serious response or not.

There was a female tennis player, (monica seles maybe) that used to kiai on her shots. It's a bit odd to do outside a MA environment but I wouldn't really care. I think the kiai would have to be appropriate to the technique being used right? I mean you wouldn't use it when performing an assist but if you were the one doing the attack, then all you need is the right feeling. The same feeling you should have when going for ippon.

Like imnothere said, the atmosphere is different since you're facing a whole team rather than an individual, but if you have the attacking mindset, then a kiai should be natural enough.

look if you want to draw attention to yourself, feel free, when you do, you can then go on and explain how you do it from kendo and then everyone will say, OMG AWESUM I wanna be like you. and then you'll say "oh you.... i'm blushing" and then you'll get laid and then you'll get bombarded by cosmic rays and get super powers.

Wait a minute, I think just being able to use kiai would give me a large competitive edge.

Hey, I'm not ashamed of any of those two. But I think that his point was that while both are fun you cannot feel right outside doing it unless you have a bunch of other people with you doing it with you too.

Well wait a minute, I fumikomi in public, in some sports I just naturally fumikomi, badminton, volleyball. And I'm the only one doing it.

A kiai in a lab is a surefire way to stop everyone from what they're doing.

I really only recommend this in an emergency situation, not so much when teaching.

lol, we are!

i too kiai when i play sports. specially in basketball when i'm blocking a shot (yeaaaah babyyyy, how'd u like that huh huhhhh?? lol :D), or in soccer when i'm kicking the ball :D : http://perso.wanadoo.es/hector_2004/ima/hyuga_1.jpg

i also sing in a rock band. and the drummer is a bit rough on the pads, so i have to scream a lot in order to be heard :P on top of that, i have a little brother who is always causing trouble and chaos. so kiaing him to stop is one of the only things that can stop him from destroying our dear world as we know it.

i think it boils down to one thing: if you do sports/whatever your own style, with kiaing, do you really care about what others think?

if you care then it's a matter of self-awareness and shyness. perhaps you should care a bit less what others think, throw the shame out of the window and do whatever makes you happy? :D :D

i agree!

although should do it only at optimal distance - such as 1 pace or less around the victim's ear....

Oh no, I don't think I'm exactly shy or self-concious about it, I just don't feel I can summon the same type of energy I get at Kendo while playing volleyball.

It's all about attitude. Instead of viewing volleyball as if it were a sport or game, think of it as a form of ritualized combat. I don't think it's really that difficult myself. If you can muster the spirit during solo kata practice, then you can transfer that attitude to anything you do. If you can't, then I'd say you're more self conscious than you think you are. :)

Like I said the first time I posted in this thread, you may not feel the time is right because you're spending more time with assists or passing. If you're the spiker, that's the best opportunity you'll have. How often does that really occur for you?

I hope someone brought the biscuit....

Kiai doesn't have to have a sound you know...

...neither does self abuse
*stealth ninja jizz falls from above*
... and you thought it was a seagull didn't ya?!
:smoker:

Strange thread. If you want to scream your head off, go for it... doesn't make it kiai though. :chinese:

aah, is that so...? :D i dunno then. i've done MA since i was a kid, and in most of them MA the "kiai/yell" is in-sync with the moment of impact. so to me i guess it kinda comes natural to yell whenever i'm hitting a ball or someone in the head :D

when serving imagine you are going for men and hitting one of your dojo mates in the head instead of a ball... then you'll see how kiai comes natural haha :D
