I know we've all practiced with injuries of varying degrees, but I have one nagging thing that keeps flaring up and was wondering if anyone else has maybe experienced the same.

On my left hand, in the webbing between my thumb and forefinger, there seems to be a pressure point that is extremely sensitive. I'm not sure how it got so sensitive, but it seems to be extremely susceptible to getting 'activated'. I don't know how else to describe it. Some nights, it's just fine, and other nights, it acts up so bad that I can barely hold onto the shinai, much less swing it. It also usually takes 3 or 4 days to settle down again when it gets activated..

Sometimes it happens by accident while swinging but mostly it happens at do-taiatare (sorry for my poor spelling!!.. I refer to the body crash which results in coming to tsubazeriai).. in both cases, what happens is that by gripping with my pinky and ring fingers, the shinai somehow winds up jamming back into that webbing of my left hand and my left forearm literally tingles and goes numb. It's VERY painful to even grip the shinai at that point.
And everytime I swing after that, it feels like someone is just drilling that pressure point in my hand over and over again.

Has anybody experienced this type of "injury" before?

What to do what to do?!?

Sounds like a nerve being pinched, to me. Something off with your grip? Left wrist not "cocked" over the handle enough? You said you grip with pinky and ring... I have no idea of what other schools say, but I was taught to also grip with your middle finger (only the pointer stays loose, I got a nasty nasty blister my first practice from gripping too hard with my pointer) so maybe gripping only with the bottom fingers might be leading to that?

yeah.. i've been thinking if maybe it's a problem with my grip, too..
left wrist is cocked just fine.. but since my grip is maybe the only thing that MIGHT be the problem, i'll just pay attention to that..
(i don't think that's the problem though..)

thanks for the tought!

Basically, you are permanently screwed. Was that hand ever injured? Try taping up your hand like a boxer.

hai hai...

well.. back when i was in college, i was doing a lot of taekwondo and my instructor used to use me a lot as a hapkido dummy... so.. i used to get pressure points mashed on all the time. (i'm not sure, but i suspect this might have something to do with it)...
other than that, no other injuries to my left hand/wrist..

as for taping it up like a boxer.. hrmm.. not sure...
have you experienced this or know someone who's had the same problem?
what about mabe wearing a glove or something underneath the kote? (i'm not sure i can afford to regularly tape up that hand..)

BUT.. umm.. i don't know how my hand would need to be taped up?

got any suggestions?
