what do you guys think about people who are
"supernaturally" gifted in kendo,
but have no idea of how to express that super-naturalism in words?

when they speak(as in this forum), they sound foolish and immature, but
when they are in action, they look like experienced masters.

what do you really know of your kendo masters?
how-in what way-do you compare yourself with your sensei, and other kendoist?

I can't understand completely what you're asking...

But, I've never seen anyone "supernaturally gifted" in kendo. Anyone who's good in kendo is beause they worked hard on the aspects of kendo, ex. footwork, suburi....

What i know about my senseis? All the senseis I've ever had are great kendoists and better people. It would be many many many many years before I can mention myself in the same sentence as them. Other kendoists, I let their kendo do the speaking.

So basically what you are asking is, "Is it possible to brown-nose someone while kissing their ass?"

I think what he's trying to say is that some people here are so good at kendo they're unbelieveable, but on this forum, as a guest reading their words, they could sound like a novice. It's difficult to gauge someone's kendo if you've only read their words on a website.

I've met some idiots at shiai who could rip right through anyone once they get their men on. Their skill is obscene; like lightning. It only shows that intelligence has nothing to do with doing good kendo.

I am not able to compare senseis since I've had only one since I took up kendo a year ago (actually, he's in japan right now, getting ready for his 7th dan examination).
All I can say about him in a technical point of view is that he executes his moves really smoothly, there is no rush, no overacting, he just does and he makes it look so damn easy :).
His way of teaching pleases me too. The fact he is 6th dan (hopefully 7th now :)) doesn't mean he doesn't talk about the technical issues he had to correct as a young kendoka. He also emphasizes on respect and the proper state of mind a lot.

Well that's it isn't it. If you're "supernaturally" good at kendo but lack wisdom and understanding of its underpinnings then you are just good at hitting someone with a stick. If you do beautiful kendo and live its tenets but never score a single match or shiai point you are a kendoka.

Indeed, my Sensei strongly emphasizes on the spiritual side of kendo.
In a general way, the students at my dojo aren't the strongest in shiai, but have a good level of technical finesse.
We went to the Belgian Kyu Championship. We weren't that good in shiai but my dojo was strong during the technical tournament.

Even if it takes longer to become good in shiai, I'd go for the technical approach. It doesn't matter how gifted you are, if you don't understand the basic principles of Kendo you'll get stuck one day.

A lot of people seem to forgot many of the principles once they engage in shiai. My instructor always emphasizes back straight, shoulders back, good kamae, no "shinai Parkinson's" (wobbling your shinai to get your opponent's center), big, straight techniques, following through. You may not always score lots of points against the "breakdancers" but it sure looks and feels a lot better.

Unfortunately, I really can't answer this question because I am a supernaturally gifted kendoist and I don't know what it is like not to be one.
