View Full Version : How do I re-size a photo and I want to add an animated gif to my sig. please.
Kaoru

Ok, I don't know if this belongs here or in the FAQ section, so I'm sorry if it's in the wrong location...
Anyway, I'd like to know how to size down an image that is from another website. Or, do I put it on my computer? I don't know how to re-size it there, either though... I had one in my sig. ages ago, but apparently, it's too big now(It was viewable when I had it in my sig before several years ago.), and no matter what I have done, it will not work, and I have no idea how to fix the pic myself. I have just kept the location of it for when I remembered to ask what to do with it, in my sig. I finally today erased it and saved it on my computer until I know what to do with it. hehehe, And now, about a year or two later, I remembered to ask about this. :ko:
Also, I tried to upload another cute thing today that happened to be an animated little gif and I got told that it was an "invalid" thing. Why? I'd love to have these things in my sig. and it would be fun to change them around from time to time. I've got one in my e-budo sig, and I'd love to have them here too.
Examples below of what I wanted to add:
http://www.smilecwm.com/smileys/Genres/Kaos/4
So, can adding gifs to a sig. be allowed too please?
Thank you very much! :)

If you go to the "edit signature" option, at the bottom it lists sig privs and you'll probably see something like:
Can Upload Images for Signature Yes
Can Upload Animated GIF for Signature No
So it looks like animated sigs aren't allowed.
As for resizing, you can use any image editing program like MS Paint or Gimp or resize them, or, if you have a photobucket account (it's free) you can upload images there and resize them with photobucket's editor. It's easy enough to just select a preset size like thumbnail and it will do the work for ya.
I'm not a web geek so I can't help much beyond that.

Oh thanks! I never had noticed that before. Well, since e-budo is the same type of board like this one is, maybe Neil can make it so we can have animated gifs too. They're so cute! The ones I found, that is... I really want to put one in my sig!

Hey... What are you trying to do - Torture me??? :D Heck, I haven't been using that stupid thing for a couple months now. Photobucket's online editor is simple enough that even I can use it.
GIMP is a full featured image editing package and so I don't recommend it unless you already know what you're doing or have the motivation to teach yourself fancy stuff. That's why I suggested MS Paint, it's good for simple things like cropping and resizing. Gimp is kinda like opensource Photoshop.
FYI, for images to show up in your sig, they can't be taller than 500 pixels, wider than 100 pixels and cannot be larger than 19.5 kb.
If you're having trouble getting an image to show up, check those properties. Right click on the image, select "Properties" and make sure the width, height and size are all within limits.
Considering that Neil's expressed an old school dislike for smileys, I'd give up on the idea of him allowing animated gifs. :)

I am not very happy about this. It is impossible to learn photo-resizing properly without a proper teacher. There are many backyard Photoshoppers posting their vids on YouTube to 'look cool' but I tell you
no!
This is not true photo-manipulation. To learn properly, you need a teacher - and they MUST be recognised by the AUSPSF. Without this person you are doing the art a disservice, you are shitting on those who do learn Photoshop properly - and you're probably not insured.
Don't get me wrong - we've all done it at one stage or another but it is something you do when you don't know better. That is what we're here for - to keep you on the right path and to help you on this wonderful journey.
Persevere. Your fingers will hurt for some time but you will get used to the techniques. It is a long and arduous journey but everyone here will tell you it is a wonderous thing to be involved in.
Sorry for the long rant but I am writing this on my PocketPC.

It's from those family of gifs I posted in the link above in my first post. It's fun to change them out with the seasons and holidays, too. I'm on this board more often though, so they'd be more fun here.
Hey Neil-sensei... Smilies are just like a human face. What would the world be like without facial expressions?? That would be really scary... We'd all be robot-like and, we'd all be misunderstanding each other too... So, smilies/facial expressions are a gift to us to keep the peace, as I see it.

Hello!
Thank you so much for your helpful and earnest reply. :)
I am not very happy about this. It is impossible to learn photo-resizing properly without a proper teacher. There are many backyard Photoshoppers posting their vids on YouTube to 'look cool' but I tell you

This is not true photo-manipulation. To learn properly, you need a teacher - and they MUST be recognised by the AUSPSF. Without this person you are doing the art a disservice, you are shitting on those who do learn Photoshop properly - and you're probably not insured.
WHAT?? You mean those you tube photoshop videos I've been watching are by Backyard Photoshop Wannabes?? Woooowwww... I never even knew that, and here I was, gearing up to teach myself to photoshop! I thought it would be a snap, you know? But, I don't wanna learn everything all wrong and all that, and you just saved me from being a self-taught wannabe!
So... you say a photoshop teacher has to be a member of the proper organisation, and must be legit? Ok. So, that site that that Kenzan person gave me isn't legit then? Oh hey... isn't that what they call a McPhoto dojo? I've heard that term used before, so does that site qualify as one?
So, I really need a qualified teacher who knows what they are really doing and has loads of experience, is that what you're really saying? Hmmm... I wonder if any are in this tiny town. Probably not, as usual... I live in the biggest black hole you can imagine, and it's pretty far from a big city, so am I outta luck?? :(
Don't get me wrong - we've all done it at one stage or another but it is something you do when you don't know better. That is what we're here for - to keep you on the right path and to help you on this wonderful journey. Oh thank you soooo very much! You really saved me and I am indebted to you. :)
Persevere. Your fingers will hurt for some time but you will get used to the techniques. It is a long and arduous journey but everyone here will tell you it is a wonderous thing to be involved in.
Oh, I'll work very hard and do my best to learn everything correctly, no matter what it takes. I'm sure I'll enjoy it. :)
So, can you tell me where the nearest legitimate photoshop teacher is? :) I'd really appreciate that.
Sorry for the long rant but I am writing this on my PocketPC.Oh, that's quite all right. I used to use one of those but I got so frusterated when using it one day because it was just so darned slow to type with a stylus and it was making me go crazy, that I finally threw it out the door as far as I could toss the idiotic thing. I sincerely hope this doesn't happen to you too! :) Good luck using that silly thing!
Thank you so much again for all your help. I really do appreciate the trouble. And just think... I nearly became a Photoshop wannabe!
Sincerely yours,
Kaoru

Kenzan, that's a lot of good sense! (I'm more KDE than gnome, but not to the point where I'll troll here on those subject)
Why would you want it as an OS?
Because you want an OS that is NOT:
slow on BOTH high and low end computers.
gives all privileges to all programs: you don't want to give your keys to the first guy you met in the streets, right?
needs a reinstallation every six months.
as customizable as a prefab home.
needs to be sustained all over its six month life span.
As trustworthy as an English.
EDIT: I was forgetting the annoying and ineffective antipiracy systems.

That sound pretty good to me! I doubt this laptop could handle it though... It's my dad's old one. It's a 3 year old Win XP with just the basics. It won't even let me play Scrabble on it when I downloaded it from the disk I have. :( I couldn't even get it to let me download Igowin from the internet. That's a Go game. I installed Xubuntu (a fast-working Ubuntu-based system) on a eight years old desktop: AMD duron 700MHz, 192Mo of SD-RAM (not DDR, SD-RAM), and a GeForce 2. This veteran takes no more than 8 seconds more than my two month old gaming PC (with Win XP) to go from switching the power on to fully operational state.
On my gaming PC, Kubuntu need 36 seconds against 66 for XP...
that's what is wonderful with Linux: you want an hyper fancy system for a powerful computer? You got it. You want a fast and fancy enough OS for an old computer? You got it.
XP? a not-so fancy not-so friendly not-so fast OS.

Oh... for the original topic...
I would like to note in comment to Neil-sensei's comment on "big ass" sigs, that many sigs are already big because people have a lot of text as well as a small photo or, just a lot of text by itself. And, they've not been a problem so far that I can tell. :)
I don't plan on having a huge sig. I just want the option of changing out things. And, I don't see what's wrong with wanting a small photo and/or a small gif. I never put words in my sig, and if I did, I'd choose one image thing to put in instead of both. I have already posted a link to the gifs I am interested in. They are not huge, I promise, if you would just please look at them.
And, if you set the option to use both image options of photo and gif but requested everyone to use just one of them in a sig, I'd be fine with that. I just would like the option of changing out things from time to time.
Please at least consider it. Thank you. :)

What? With all due respect, I was not meaning to take people's text or small photos in their sigs from them. That was only an example and I thought they were fine and you didn't seem to have a problem with the size of sigs used so far(Which are big, but not huge, either. "Big ass" to me means huge. Sorry... I ought to have made that more clear.) I wasn't arguing against them. I was just asking for consideration of adding the use of small gifs, and having a choice of the type of small images, but not have a huge sig. :)

You mean not animated? I was talking about animated small gifs like I showed in the link in my first post. I would like to please be able to upload those kind. :)
Those moving and blinking shits are really annoying. I hate them. They drag attention to themselves, are repetitive and always look dumb the 50th time they played their animation. Please refrain! if you can't, try 5 minutes of this (http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com/).

Here's how easy Gimp is to use.
I created this image just now in less than 5 minutes.

hahaha, That was funny! But, that is huge and annoying because it's huge and with stupid music. I'd just like to be able to change from a photo to animated gif from time to time. If you go to e-budo, I'm Kaoru there too. Find my profile and see the little bunny from the kaos list I have. It's pretty unobtrusive. :) Someone there sent it to me in a PM one day a couple years ago.
I hate the stupid in your face animated gifs... Like most on that site I gave above except for the kaos category ones. :)
Oh well, can't please everybody... :)

hahahaha!! I must have not carefully read what it actually said, and the photo itself. And, I just looked at it again... Oooops! I didn't realise what the blob was supposed to be until just now... Oh, I'm slow today... :ko: Of COURSE I don't want that Blue Blob to eat the poor defenseless puppy!! :(
