If you check their other vids the kids all wear t-shirts saying "SWAT TEAM" on the back.

Oh, you guys are so much fun!
Seriously, as a complete newbie, you guys have helped me discern what is "real", and I thank you for that! Plus, the term McDojo does amuse me.
(Yeah, I don't know why I'm delurking for a senseless first post like this, but you can't lurk forever, right?)
My question is... do you think a few of these children will really develop a real interest and seek out more serious training? Will they have developed "bad" habits that will inhibit their growth, or can they overcome?

For their sake I hope the Gracies don't find out they are selling this BS (OK maybe I do ). And ofcourse they are a part of the MA Hall of Fame (http://www.tokyojoes.net/index.cfm?page=15). Hello Hexi and welcome.
Oh, you guys are so much fun!
My question is... do you think a few of these children will really develop a real interest and seek out more serious training? Will they have developed "bad" habits that will inhibit their growth, or can they overcome?
Sadly, maturity and "waking up" go hand and hand, its hard for a child to discern reality and what something like "koryu" or "iaido" really encompasses, and much like all childhood, any adult's "word" is golden and to a young kid often comes off as the golden unbreakable truth, and covering a variety of topics other than just martial arts, its very hard to "break" out of a mold or lifestyle.
I doubt I could spend 2 minutes arguing with the "Senior" students on the right or the instructor that what they do is pure essential "bullshido" without getting a deaf ear, so again, if those kids rely upon those to "instruct" them who don't care to wake up, its hard to make them feel differently without their own "awakening".
Personally I've had quite a few mcdojo experiences, ranging from typical TKD/Karate to "American Iaido", and I have to say from a child to my teenage years what I felt as "off" and managed to feign an "interest" in seemed to just be eaten up by the other students. Fortunately, I found ways to make long commutes and moved around to far greater dojos. Unfortunately, they stayed behind, believing they were being taught a legit MA, as do their instructors believe they're teaching.

A friend of me who lives in california, he had put his daughter at a dojo.
He told me some about the dojo and I directly knew it was a McDojo so warned him about it and also told him to keep her out of their sword class, which was an extra.
She was doing well at her classes and enjoying it and because he signed a 6 month contract which he also already paid for he let her stay at the dojo.
Yesterday I spoke to her and she told me complainingly her dad took her out of the class after she broke her foot.
So I explained to her how an instructor which isn't able to perform an exersize controlled and safely shouldn't teach.
I also told her how my sensei had been doing advanced exersizes (tsuki) with my while remaining under controll and even when things go wrong he never hurt me.
After that she told me she understood her dad took her out class and she was happy he did it.
Now she's horsebackriding and swimming like all girls of her age

She shot the racoon which tore the interiour of her dads car.
Just another funny story.
Her dad had been eating crips on his way home and one fell between the seat. Because it was nice weater and they live way out he didn't close his windows.
A racoon smelled the crip and was looking for food.
In the morning the whole front seat was torn up.
There is a lesson in this:-))
He never told me he got her to take revenge on the racoon, he did tell me he taught her to shoot a gun:-))

We do not do stuff to kick ass (there is kickboxing and other arts for that), and in fact I don't think a Dan grade in a JSA is automatically equivalent to having the ability to kicking anyones butt.
Even at that, other budo type MA's are also hardly a silver bullet. Anyone out there with reasonably fast hands or ten pounds on you can knock you out more easily than you may think. All it takes is a second's distraction, even high Dan grades make mistakes.

Adding my two cents, and basically reiterating what JCM said, It's pretty much illogical (if not illegal) to be making McDojo house calls and issuing challenges. That "age" passed centuries ago and most if not all of our JSA's already earned their merit badges, so I don't see the need for people to prove their JSA's legitimacy by doing such and again contrasts why we carry on their practice/legacy in modern times. Even then, effective training of any kind is no silver bullet (JCM's nice way)for any form of success. Even law-school graduates with years of experience and victories can and do lose a case to novices or circumstance.

There was actually a big event here last fall where a big group of the public got together with fluorescent cardboard tubes and whacked away at each other until all the tubes broke. It was done as a sort-of-performance-art thing, not as anything connected to any martial art.

I think it's curious that it seems from my limited exposure that Iaido is more frequently corrupted and "McDojo-ized" than Kendo. I've seen more than I can count of these mcdojo vids on youtube or here for people practicing "[insert made up name] ryu" Iaido/jutsu that is not legitimate, but very, very few of those for Kendo. In fact, the only ones I have seen for Kendo are some veiled Kumdo criticism (which isn't even the same thing) and a group of Brazilians who seem to charge too much money for their Kendo. Maybe I'm missing a bunch, though.
The question I have is, assuming that's correct: why do you think this is? Is it because Kendo has competitions with large world-wide tournaments? Because of the world-wide IKF/AJKF standardization? General lack of competing schools? Is there something about Iaido itself?
I don't know the answer. I've never even seen Iaido in person. So I'm not trying to say anything negative about anyone. I just think it's odd.
