My friends and family that does kendo worry that "doing kendo so much will make you hage" Many people in the past have become hage while doing kendo but also, many have not become hage too! Just in curiosity, does short in heigth in kendo make you hage? Being tall help it?

Standard male-pattern baldness is usually caused by excess testosterone. Same thing that causes hairy backs. Bad combo.

Does that mean that those of us who shave our heads only want to appear to have excess testosterone!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? !?!?!? :beard:

Guys, guys, why so vain?
I don't think kendo will make you hage. If anything, all those whacks probably improve blood circulation to the follicles, eh? Anyway, if you do need to shave your head (and 99% of women agree this is a much better look than a comb-over, ew) think about all the sexy bald people out there: Sinead O'Connor, XXX, Patrick Stewart, er ... can't think of anymore, help me out here, guys ...

how do you pronounce this word 'hage'? like... the hague in the netherlands? or...?
...and i've never heard this term.. what english-speaking country uses this term more regularly than 'bald' ??
just curious,

Quick and dirty Japanese pronounciation guide!
a as in father
i as in suite
u as in duke
e as in bet
o as in rode
So hage is pronounced hah-geh, or something like that. I see lots of tall and short sensei who still have lots o' hair, so I don't think kendo makes you hage or being taller makes you hage.
Advice from a female kenshi: Don't do the comb-over! Aiyeeeeeee!!!

I don't do kendo, but I am still balding...Iaido must be too stressful... :D
When I get it cut REALLY short, my wife's students like to refer to me as "hage bouzu"..roughly, bald monk. Such sweet kids.
If anything, wearing the headgear (or a hat for that matter) all the time is more likely to hasten balding than getting wacked with shinai.
