My previous sensei gave a big speech one day at the end of practice. In summary, he basically said that kendo is about reading your partner/opponent's heart. In the spirit of competition, you are trying to beat your opponent by reading his intentions and acting in an appropriate way that will defeat him. In a warm and fuzzy kinda way, you are both working towards the same goal of improving yourself through kendo and sharing in that with your kendo friends that you meet and practice with.
