*THIS IS PURELY FOR FUN SO DON'T GET MAD!!!!*
There's a bit of a long intro into this so bear (http://climateprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/polar-bear-tongue.jpeg) with me.
The other day I noticed my right calf is A LOT smaller than my left and I was joking about ways to even it out. Started off by switching into hidari chudan....got swatted...so I popped up into jodan.....got swatted again.
When I got home I thought "Wow! that's a really stupid reason to learn jodan." So I figured some of you must be able to come up with other comical reasons. So here we go.
1) My right calf is smaller than my left and I want to even them out
2) I want to get tsuki'd more so it looks like I have a girlfriend

I am the "perfect" person to answer this thread. Here are my (stupid) reasons for doing jodan. You decide the level of absurdity.
1)I want to be super cool kendoka like Chiba sensei and Kenji Shodai
2)I (sometimes) injure my right heel so, instead of not practicing, I do hidari jodan.
3)I thought understanding jodan would help me understand chudan, especially in the te-no-uchi department.
4)For the better of the club, I thought if someone played jodan in our club, then when we meet jodan players in tournaments. Everyone will at least be accustomed to playing against that kamae somewhat.
5)I think if you understand the principles of the sword, you should be able to do chudan then move onto jodan then eventually nito. Now, you can certainly have your "favorite" kamae/style, and be better at one then the other. but theory stands, once you understand something, you can relate it to something else.
6)Because I can !!!!!
7)I thought jodan would help me get over the fear of being hit, because everyone loves to throw hard tsuki(s) at me when I am in jodan.
.....want more? I've got a whole laundry list.

1) I look taller when I do jodan.
2) Jodan is my middle name.
3) I also train in jodo, therefore the reasons I should do jodan are inherently obvious.

1) My right calf is smaller than my left and I want to even them outI'm sure if you do the research you would find this to be looked upon as very attractive in some cultures (I'm not exactly sure which ones, perhaps Borat's Village)...

What are the good reasons for doing Jodan?
Geordie Bruiser

Jodan is a very aggresive attacking Kamae, which can be very effective if done well.
It greatly reduces the number of targets for an opponent.

I thought it added a target of the left kote? Does it remove others? Is Tsuki not allowed? I thought I read on here that mune used to be an additional target but isn't anymore for jodan players, right?

A good reason for doing jodan or nito is so that people on Kendo World can bash you and tell you you suck.
It builds character.

ROFL, best yet imo.
Bad reasons
1) i keep losing in chudan
Good reasons
(not jokingly)
1) In my opinion having knowledge of jodan as well as nito will give you a better understanding of kendo as a whole (no, not it will improve your chudan)
But i think of it like this. In school, do you study only math if you want to be a banker? Only history if you want to be a historian? No, not until college at least. You study math, Social studies, science, health. It is all learning that will help you become a smarter person. I see jodan and nito as the same. If you want to go full out jodan, nito for the long haul, more power to you. But i think the two are important to have a decent amount of knowledge of as to make your kendo as strong as possible, especially if you want to teach.
2) Its cool. lol
Sorry, little off topic there kinda. =P

Yes it does give the you the option of left kote by taking away the right kote. AS you say Tsuki to the mune used to be allowed but not anymore.
Men is not really an option except if doing hiki men and do is very difficult to score against Jodan.

4)For the better of the club, I thought if someone played jodan in our club, then when we meet jodan players in tournaments. Everyone will at least be accustomed to playing against that kamae somewhat.
I actually think this is quite a good supporting reason to do Jodan as long as it isn't the only reason.
1) In my opinion having knowledge of jodan as well as nito will give you a better understanding of kendo as a whole (no, not it will improve your chudan)
I've spent a year doing only Jodan until I started teaching my new club. My chudan had actually improved, but in a kinda unpolished way. I'd still been improving my maai, tenouchi, timing, etc.. and found that these just need intergating into my chudan. So while you won't improve as fast as by just doing chudan, there is improvement.
My reason for doing Jodan,
My teacher say my ego inflated so much that it pushed my hands up above my head! :D

1. so the chicks can see my 3 foot long weapon better.
2. It allows me time to contemplate the utter destruction of my inferior opponent.
3. I like being tsuki'd.... and not responding to it. It puts the fear of god up people. (They usually don't spot I was asleep..)
4. so people copy it and I can tsuki them for being a smartass, or disarm them when they try katate waza....
I like gedan.... anyone else for that one??? Yet again the chicks get to see the length of my weapon...

Yes it does give the you the option of left kote by taking away the right kote.
Are you sure?
In the final match between USA and Japan at 13th WKC, I think at least one of the points by USA was migi-kote against Seike's jodan.

That's right. Both kote are valid targets when someone is in jodan.
