That is interesting that you have to earn it. From what I have seen the dojo lets you train in sweats untill they are pretty sure you won't quit anytime soon, then they tell you do go buy some equipment and get with the program. I think the best person for you to ask is your sensei. He is the only one who knows how long it will take you to earn your hakama.

those hakama could be quite effective in making your opponent go crosseyed
but to be serious, in my club we get hakama etc after about a month usually, but then most people start off in club gear and are expected to buy their own after a grading or two
5 months is a long time to not have gear id have thought, many people here get full bogu after about three or four months (training twice a week)

in our Dojo it will take you about 3-4 months of learning foot work and basic strikes before you will get your dogi, then about another 2 months till bogu, the more effort you put in the faster you get your equipment, wearing a hakama early only helps to hide lousy footwork, ...

I wore kendogi and hakama at the first class. The sensei said we can wear it anytime. It 's a good feeeling that i wear it when i do exercise. But i think it is necessary to wear "bogu" after 3 months.
