Hello everyone
I know that this is quite a stupid question, but I am confuse.
My sempai told me that the string side is the blade side, but the
sensei said that the bamboo side is the blade side. Now I can remember
which side is which. Can anyone please help correct me please...
the more I think about it the more I get confuse...
Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

You're sempai is on crack (assuming he said such a thing)... The "blade side" is the opposite of the string side: You don't hit people with the string you hit them with the side opposite to the string.
The string represents the BACK of the blade.

In other words, when you hold the shinai in chudan no kamae, the string should be staring up at you with its beady little eyes.

The excersise I do is using the shinai to cut you arm. If it is bleeding, that is the blade. It works verywell for shinai and including testing knives or any sharp objects.

I tried that with my cat. He's got a few blade sides.

I know this doofus who maintains that he lived in Japan. And yet says he was instructed by his Kendo sensei to (get this) "chaulk the string and use it to see where your blow lands". It seems stupid to me at the time... but oh well.
Later, I take up Kendo and am promptly instructed in the correct use of the Shinai, as I assumed it would be used. String up.
Yet, I run into this fellow again and he insists that the "proper way" is string down.
Most peculiar.

Yes, you are complete idiot. But let me help you.
The side with the string is the back of the blade. You do not want to wear down the string, or yakanui, so you would want that on the opposite side.
The side that is opposite the side with the string is the cutting edge of the blade.

The back of the shinai is the "mine" ( 峰・嶺 ). The string is "mine-zuru" ( 峰弦 ) . The "zuru" here is form "tsuru" which means string.
If you can remember this you will be able to remember that the string goes at the back.
The opposite side of the shinai to the "mine-zuru" is the "jin-bu" ( 刃部 ) . This literally means the "blade area".
The point of the shinai is the kensen.
The leather at the point of the shinai is the sakigawa.
The striking area of the shinai is the monouchi
The guard is the tsuba
The hilt is the tsuka
The leather of the hilt is the tsukagawa
The very back tip of the shinai is the tsukagashira
When you are holding the shinai in chudan-no-kamae the left of the shinai is the omote side and the right is the ura.

Come on!? What kind of question is this? "Which Side is the blade side?" Are you Serious? This is one of the most basic things they teach you at practice.
Even this idiot above has been taught or knows which side is on top...
Consult your Sensei about these things or listen more carefully at practice.

He was serious. Leave him alone. People, when somebody asks a question, even if it seems like a stupid one, do not make fun of them! It isn't very kind. He only just began a couple weeks ago, and each person is different. Some know more than others. There is nothing wrong with not knowing if the tsuru is the blade edge or not. And, it shows that he knows it is important to know, by asking. That is good. Some of you wrote nice replies though... :)

I agree with you Kaoru.
If you look at my earlier post you will see that I went to some length to answer this question. It's just that he has made 123 posts so I got a little suspicious.
There are some people here who make fake posts just for the hell of it.
I am sorry if I caused any offence to A P.

Oh yeah. Forgot about your other post. Oops! But, there were other people's comments I was referring too, also. Yeah, he has made a ton of posts, but most were made just before he began, and I think he was just gathering information. I wondered a bit about that myself at first(Sorry AP!), but if you read them, he is serious. He's just a very cheerful person. Hehe, yeah, I know some make fake posts for no reason. There's always one in every bunch...
Oh, regarding your first post... don't you mean "mune" and not "mine?" I've only seen it as "mune" on other sites.

No worries.
Can you read Japanese (I'm not trying to be rude)? The following URL lists both mune ( 棟 ) and mine ( 峰 ) as equivalent
http://homepage3.nifty.com/ganryu/musashi/musashi2/denrai14.htm
as does http://www.mt-w.com/mononofukai/dictionary/name.html
I think I must have been taught "mine" first.
"Mine" also appears as 嶺 at the following URL.
http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~ichini/gizyutu006.htm
I have a lot of respect for the guy who wrote this page, so "mine" might have stuck from there.
I didn't know it could be called "mune" too. Thanks.

Also, in Japanese the term "mine-uchi" means to hit with the back of the sword.
I think this expression is far more common than "mune-uchi".

No, unfortunately. I'm just beginning to learn Hirigana... Rats. I went to that site, and darn, I can't read it. Same with the other two sites. Oh well... I appreciate the links, though. No, I know you aren't being rude. ;)
And, do itashimashite! Watashi mo... Domo arigato gozaimasu for the new term of "mine." I didn't know that either. Now I know it. :) I wonder why there are two words for the same thing... Does "mine" mean the same thing as "mune" or is the definition slightly different?
Mine-uchi? New for me too! I'd only heard mune-uchi. hehe! Thanks!
I take it you are lucky enough to be able to read all that on those sites? You are so lucky!

I think you could describe both mune and mine as a "ridge". For mune the ridge is at the top of a house. For mine the ridge is at the top of a mountain.
Thay are both in the dictionary as meaning the back of a sword.

I wouldn't be much good without the Goo Japanese dictionary http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/
The best thing about having a bit of Japanese experience is being able to view Ichinikai http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~ichini/
I guess that sounds like an advertisement! I just like to give credit to my sources.
I hope people don't mind my incessant quoting of Ichinikai and other Japanese websites.

Hi!
Really? It does? I will have to remember both terms. Oh, you are so lucky... I want to get my hands on that book! Did you get the soft cover or hard cover edition? How is the print? Is it tiny or decent? Meaning, am I going to have to use a magnifying glass to read it. I have a bad vision impairment. But I want that book anyway. I haven't found it yet at Barnes and Noble, which makes me think that I am going to end up just ordering it.
Regarding your other post. You can read Japanese, can't you. Hehe! Reason I'm asking, is that both sites are all in Japanese! :D Whaddaya mean, you aren't much good without Goo? You can read it already! :D hehe! That first site is a Japanese dictionary with the definitions in Japanese, right? I can only read a few Hirigana, and a couple words and phrases in Hirigana and am learning more.
But not enough to read anything on these pages. Oh well. Someday! :D
