could anyone explain to me what suburi are? all i understand are they are exercises that develop some technique and some muscles?

Be nice, better to ask a question and resolve it rather than not ask it and stay uninformed. Also I have known plenty of people who have done martial arts taught by a non-native of the country where it originated and they haven't know what technical terms are to things because their instructors had horrible and sometimes incorrect accents/pronounciations. There could be any number of reasonable reasons that the question was asked. Sorry for being moral-be-nice-police, I just got back from school. :)


SUBURI is the act of swinging at the air to practice correct form for striking. Some people call it a warm up but it is not. It is practice that you should pay careful attention to in order to correct your form.

man yowai, wat is wrong with u, when i asked about zanshin u said it was just abstract and i shld ignore it and now u say suburi is pointless... i suppose if i asked what a shinai is u'll say its something purely theoretical and its as useless as your arms eh?

Now that we are talking in a cybergeek dialect, let me remind you that the instance of the imperative of "do not feed the troll" signals the existence of two groups: the one issuing the imperative belongs to the "fanboy" group ( fanatical obsession of a particular activity or object ) and the "troll" belongs to the group that is moderate in its opinion with respect to the said activity or object

The "troll" group is usually appealing to common sense. All in all, your aggrevated by common sense.

I would agree with Yowai on one thing, that suburi can be harmful IF you elaborate on his statement. Once in a great while it may be good to do lots of suburi, such as 1000, but if done frequently the constant swinging and forcefully stopping the swing does hurt your joints/tendons/whatever I am not a doctor. It is different with different people, but if I try to do more than 100 suburi without resting between sets of repetitions then I get major wrist pain. Granted you can hit a practice dummy all day because the recoil saves your joints the stress of having to stop the swing, but excessive suburi does cause some people some discomfort.

Suburi is very important for a good kendo, it is imperative that all kenshin does it. The suburi is the form of the strike, it supose to be a big movement, in my dojo we do every strike this way:insted of pulling the shinai just above your head we pull it all the way till it hits the back, it is a nice way to remaind the spirit of the suburi: FORM.

My Sensei is japanese and he allways say to us that a good kenshin does suburi every day for 15 minutes, that is enough. Or you just do 100-500 movements with a bokuto for suburi.

I think doing Suburi is very important. Primary for beginners, who have no feeling for the correct timing of footwork, kiai and shinai movement when doing a strike. When training suburi you learn these things in a conscious way. Later in shiai you have to do it right without thinking about the way you do it.

Sure, suburi can be harmful and that's maybe the reason why your sensei tells you how to do them in a as little harmful way as possible, don't you think?

i dont mind pains tht come with training, its sort of satisfying, gives me a feeling tht im doin something right... its a nice feeling :)

Pain that heals is fine and good. Permanent pain takes you off the battlefield. There is a difference between good pain because of a good work out and bad pain from your body breaking down.

Never liked that no pain no gain saying. sorry.
