My Japanese friends said that they often buy shinai at shops and dunno how to make a shinai by their own.So do me,but in VN there's no place to buy shinai and another kendo equipment.
I 've trainning on my own with a bamboo rod,how it bad!
So,if any one know how to make a shinai please tell me the way.

Really it would be much easier if you just ordered one from the many online suppliers. But if you really want to know, here's a good overview (http://www.at80.jp/shinai/shinai_kotei00.html).

I don't think making your own shinai is very realistic. You could on the other hand make your bokken. http://www.cygnus.uwa.edu.au/~uwamac/aikido/opinion/bokken.html

I saw your other thread; if you find a dojo you may be able to buy a shinai from them. Hope this is helpful. Good luck.

yowai is like a crying baby in a train/airplane, very annoying yet must be ignored.

as for makeing your own shinai, buying a shinai is usualy cheaper than trying to make your own and it takes less time and less trouble, some bamboos just won't do you have to know which type, age of bamboo all sort of stuff like that, I can only dream of making my own brand shinai and selling it.

There are many bamboo in Vietnam to exploit. If he can make his own shinai, then may be later, he can start to invest into that. Just the first step is difficult that involve many trial and errors. Good luck to you.

Hibakotaro, will you be visiting any country lately? Maybe those country will have a dojo or a martial art shop that sells shinai. For better choice, I still think that you should buy through internet.

Yea, making your own shinai is fairly difficult and, unless its your profession, pointless. The shinai will have to be identically shaped so that it holds up to strikes and a lot of pressure. Also, unless you know a good deal about bamboo, you probably don't know how to cut it or to select the strongest parts of a specific plant. My guess is that if you live in the West and are in a place where you can get full bamboo plants, I'm quite sure that you'll either be able to buy one online or will be within driving distance of a martial arts store that can provide it.

From my limited experience, folks, I would not really recommend getting shinai from your local (chinatown) martial arts store.

True, in most cases it's far more accessible than having to order online and wait a week or so, and you get to actually pick and choose which shinai you want, but most martial arts stores - since they do not specialize in kendo supplies - stock fairly lousy shinai. The bamboo is often dried to the point of cracking, weight is poorly distributed, and the prices are not all that different from online distributors.

Did you know they even sell shinai on eBay these days? They call them "fighting sticks". Good lord.

You got to understand. The chance to travel to other countries is minimal in Vietnam and people over there don't have the financial luxurious like us to afford an airline ticket and all travel expenses. The minimum wages overther is like $30 dollar a month and if you order a shinai from let say Korea plus shipping and handling, then you are total F..k for that month. He is a student and I used to be a student in Vietnamese college so I know. He is not making a lot of money neither. I admire him for find the way to learn Kendo and find the way to obtain equipment he needs. Probably one of the reason why people don't learn Kendo overthere is the equipment is so expensive for the average people. We are better find the way to help him making his own shinai, otherwise other advice like buying abroad won't help him at all.

be as it may, making your own shinai as has been said before is NOT impossible it's just very very difficult especially when you have no experienced people to guide you through it, the process may even be more expensive than buying especialy in the early stage.

One way to get around it is to find someone who's experienced in bamboo crafts (not necessarily shinai) and ask them if they can help you make your own shinai, show them your shinai as a sample explain the details such as weight, length, thicknes, etc. One thing for sure it won't be easy.

well that's my 5 cents (they don't make 1 cent coins in Australia anymore)

I would strongly advise against making your own shinai to use in kendo practice with others. Please buy a good kendo shinai. My friend Adaberto Chavez the president of Mexico Kendo Federation lost an eye because of a bad shinai and a sensei in Germany was killed several years ago because of a broken shinai. Kendo shinai are of proper weight and width and strength to withstand the stresses of keiko. Shinai bought from non-kendo sources are dangerous. I have watched shinai being hand made in Japan and there are years of learned technique in putting a good shinai together.
You can certainly practice making them and develop your skills but don't use your creations on others until they are well road tested and up to standard specifications.
