View Full Version : How long did it take you to...
Hi folks,
Just curious - after starting kendo, how much time did you take/wait until taking your shodan exam? I'm using shodan as a benchmark because judging from an earlier forum poll, a large portion of our forum members are at or near that stage.
Please feel free to answer even if you haven't yet tested but plan to do so in the near future!

Jez my two cents but there is a huge difference between a 2-3 year shodan than a 1 year one.

It took me 5 years for shodan mainly because we couldn't go to the exam weekends every year. No cash, no time, and too far. I probably could've gotten mine in 3 years.

shodan don't mean anything You look at shodan in the east coast and shodan in the west coast, big difference.

I started kendo when 9yrs old... and got my shodan when 13yrs.
(good kendo environment, 3-5 times/week practice, testing opportunities every 2-3 months)
Where in US, unless you areein east or west coast, you do not have good environment. Even you can practice 2-3 times/week, you may not have opportunity to test, unless you travel.
Adult shodan and teen shodan is big diffrence too.

Yeah, the teenagers slaughter the adults. The examiners are way tougher on 'em too.

...starting at what age?
Started Kendo last year being 38 years old and my 15 years of Karate experience helps but I think it'll take me some years, too.

Ok Will,
Next time this "older guy" sees you I'm gonna pull out all of the stops. That means I bring my ninja foot dust, and my shinai with the lazer sights. Maybe Ill be even sneakier and take you out for a few beers BEFORE practice, just to even it up for me. Hmmm, a little talc on your side of the floor wouldn't hurt either.
Us "Older" guys need all the advantages we can get. :ponder:
