The fool doesn't know what he says, the wise doesn't say what he knows

or

He who knows not and knows not he knows not, he's a fool, shun him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not, he's simple, teach him.
He who knows and knows not he knows, he's asleep, awaken him.
He who knows and knows he knows, he's wise, follow him.

the last one is from Bruce Lee, not Kendo related but still cool :)

I dig the Hagakure for those kind of quotes =). My sig is one, not all of these are though.

"It is a principle of the art of war that one should simply lay down his life and strike. If one's opponent also does the same, it is an even match. Defeating one's opponent is then a matter of faith and destiny. "
-Hagakure

"Tomorrow's battle is won during today's practice."

"The Way of a Warrior is based on humanity, love, and sincerity; the heart of martial valor is true bravery, wisdom, love, and friendship. Emphasis on the physical aspects of warriorship is futile, for the power of the body is always limited."
- Ueshiba Morihei

"You can prevent your opponent from defeating you through defense, but you cannot defeat him without taking the offensive."
- Sun Tzu

"First see to it that you, yourself, are all right, then think of defeating an opponent."

"The end of our Way of the sword is to be fearless when confronting our inner enemies and our outer enemies."
- Tesshu Yamaoka

Hagakure was a book written by Yamamoto Tsunetomo. I believe he was a Samurai who retired and became a monk, then wrote about the lessons he'd learned in his book, Hagakure.

Indeed.

He was a samurai who wanted to commit seppuku at the death of his master. The problem was that the shogunate and his own master (while he was still living, obviously :p) were against that tradition (commiting seppuku at your masters death). So he followed the will of his master and did not commit seppuku.
Like Machismo said, he became a monk and a young samurai came to him for guidance. Hagakure is actually a record of the talks between Yamamoto Tsunetomo and this samurai.
Hagakure talks about everything, from everyday matters to situations on a battlefield. There is a lesson in each story.

The one on my signature. It's ancient provenzal, it translates to "have honor than rahter than seek for honors", it's a bit ancient, and out of fashion on those days.

Best regards.

kewl.. a spanish quote..

Not Spanish, I'm Spanish (and 1/2 French too), but the moto is ancient Provenzal, a dead lenguage, from early 10th century I believe, but I'm not sure.

And very appropiate for kendo and many other things.

"Stop saying 'kewl' you dumb idiot" (Anon)

"Furer describes several types of ‘sadistic’ behaviors by Israeli soldiers including beating Palestinians and then taking souvenir pictures with them. "I remember how we humiliated a dwarf who came to the checkpoint every day on his wagon. They forced him to have his picture taken on the horse, hit him and degraded for a good half hour."

One of Furer`s most chilling confessions related to his abuse of a 16-year old mentally retarded boy.

Furer stresses that behaviors as such are by no means isolated but rampant in the Israeli army." (IRNA)

a couple of my own...
" who was your last instructor, Conan the barbarian?"
in reply to 'the pen is mightier than the sword'...
"your pen, my sword, outside now!"
" what a good waza" ( student grins) " did you invent it yourself?" ( student gutted)...

I think this was Ito ittosai, and roughly translated is..."it takes thirty years to learn the sword, and always remember there is someone better than you somewhere..."

Finally my favourite by Kato Kiyomasa.." any samurai caught country dancing or doing any other non martial activity will be immediately ordered to commit seppuku". This obviously includes line dancing. ;)
