View Full Version : The 1st Great Foreigners-in-Japan Kendo Bust Up
The great I AM
25-08-2008, 09:48 AM
Hello foreign denizens of Japan!
I finally got around to asking Ozawa sensei for the use of Koubukan on 1st November, and he said yes. So:
On the 1st November, let's get to together and have a great big smash up, and then get smashed up. Sounds good? This is the weekend of the Senshuken taikai, so it's a long one! All good!
The idea at the moment is to start around 2pm, go for 2 hours, then hit the beers. This will also give everyone a day to recover (1st Nov is a saturday) before the All Japan Taikai on the 3rd (Monday, and public holiday).
The dojo is in Nakano ku, Tokyo, and I'll meet people between 1pm and 1.20pm at Nakano station, and then guide everyone to the dojo.
If you want any info, or to tell me you're coming (I wanna try and keep a rough list for numbers and contact on the day) then please PM me.
See you there!

Depending on numbers I reckon we could do some kihon/jigeiko then get some shiai in. Ippon shobu tournament or (again depending) some sort of Tozai-Taiko thing (East vs West..... non Japan residents get allocated on the day).

If we've only got two hours I agree with Gibbo. Might as well take our time and have a nice keiko sesh. If we try to cram a taikai in there then we are under pressure to keep things on schedule.
A Tozai type shiai maaaay be possible depending on the ammount of people. Make all the matches ippon-shochu.
I know what I said.

2 hours of ji geiko gets old.It doesn't get as old as standing around WATCHING other people for 40 minutes waiting for your own 3 minutes before realising that it's all done and everyone else is getting changed.
Some quick maths:
30 people (at a generous estimate) /2 per shiai (obviously!) x 3 minutes = 45 minutes, 42 of which you will be watching other people!

From my understanding, it's 2 hours of drinking, with 40 minutes of Keiko, followed by 3 minutes of public urination.

The Big O has provisional said he'll be there. Might grab a couple of others if they are around. Not gaijin only, but the original idea was more of a kind of KWF get together and the most reasonably practical time.

Tenugui please!
Beneath that we could have in large letters:
アホかボケか?!
I can definitely sort that out (though I will have to claim its not for me...) but we are talking 100 tenugui between maybe 20 odd people... so there would be a cost involved.

I`ll chip in the money for teneguis. How much will 100 tenegui run us?
Kenshi
21-09-2008, 10:05 PM
If there are 20 people and everybody buys them then it wont be that expensive. The 1st run of tenuguis incur and extra cost, so perhaps we can leave out the 第1回 so that we can reprint them if needed again without paying the setup cost. I wont even consider if unless I can trust everyone to cough up... otherwise its yours truly left footing the bill and left with a box full of strange tenugui.
So, if everyone is willing to pay say (number pulled out of head for now) 4000 yen for 5 tenugui, THEN I would go ahead and get them made. "I only want 1, heres 500 yen" doesnt do it for me.
Another thing we could look at is the food/beers afterwords. If gibbo (I guess) can book some tabe/nomihodai place then we could get a number for that and add then add in tenugui costs for a total figure.
It will get complex so we might want to not bother. After all - I dont know about you guys - I have loads upon loads of tenugui anyway.
Wark 1978
21-09-2008, 11:30 PM
I have loads upon loads of tenugui anyway.
Yeah, me too. They would be nice although maybe 4000 yen (if that is the price) would be better spent on beer, fried chicken, eda-mame etc.
Oh yes, and by the way, I'm in.
xvikingx
22-09-2008, 12:08 AM
George you know I'd throw down the cash (poor as I am!). It would be fun but I wouldn't be particularly upset if I didn't have ANOTHER tenugui to stick in my drawer. Besides I'm in it for the madness... say maybe we should make custome straight jackets instead?
I'm not sure if the O-man fully appreciates what he has gotten himself into!

And once I have full numbers I can book the booze up too.

Come to think of it it's not much of a drinking game if I end up consuming twice as much alcohol as anyone else even if I win.
I do like an Ikki challenge though. It's the only thing I know I can do better than anyone else I know. Except for maybe my cousin's son who I taught the same trick with milk when he was twelve.

It was noted last week during some after practice re-hydration that there is a marked absence of spite, vitriolic barbs and general trash talk in this thread. It is entirely unfitting for a bunch of people who are going to get together to fight in a few week’s time and it won’t do.
In the interest of inciting some animosity (and with tongue firmly in cheek), let me venture that you are all very silly. A good many of you are lolly-gaggers. If asked to respond to the comment that you people smell nice, I would have to say ‘more not than often’. It has been brought to my attention that wankers constitute more than half of your number, the remainder being either hosers or nerf herders. Together you are a sorry mob of expatriate ruffians and ragamuffins. I myself am curiously exempt from the above charges, save that recently my dogi has begun to smell slightly. I will take it home to be laundered tonight and it will be fresh by battle time.

With all this talk of how hammered we are going to get, the evening is bound to fizzle out into nothing. This is the way things usually turn out when a night of absolute chaos is planned.
However, if we had of told our respective wives/girlfriends/partners that we were going to have just one or two after keiko and then return to their arms smelling of roses, that it would have been a quiet night in at the library, it would have turned out to be the complete opposite.
Will the pattern be broken?
