Quote from another post: "Lucky you. Vancouver and surrounding area is ripe for kendo!" - I'm thinking: Why can't that surrounding area reach all the way to Kelowna.... Kinda depressing that in some other thread a Neil Gendzwill names our town in the same sentence as some other town I'm sure no one has heard of but the people living there... does that mean there's no hope for ever finding a dojo opening in Kelowna?

There was an attempt made some time ago to open a dojo in the interior somewhere which fell apart for some reason or another. If you're serious about it, you might consider forming a study group and travelling to Vancouver occasionally, say once a month, for direction. I'd contact the BCKF for help with this sort of thing, see www.bckf.org

I've got family in the Okanagan, so if I'm out that way (yearly) I could stop by for practise if there's a club present!

There was indeed a an attempt made at starting a Kendo (study group) in Kelowna. Several members of our Jiu-Jitsu Dojo managed to get in contact with the President of Kendo BC (Campbell Sensei). He agreed to help us form a "study group" and even taught us a weekend seminar. Several of his student from his Dojo also attended the weekend and it was great. Unfortunatly due to bad timing on our end (I was planning my wedding at the time) we ended up dropping the ball and losing contact with Campbell Sensei...However I am still very interested in learning Kendo and would love to start (or at least be part of) a Kendo group here in the Okanagan, I also believe there are still a few members of my Dojo interested. If anyone is interested in starting such a group drop me a line on this message board and I will send you an email.

Oh hey! I haven't looked back in here for months, but a friend of mine was looking and told me that there was an interesting reply...

In any case, I still want to do Kendo here in Kelowna, and since Kelowna is fairly central for the Okanagan as a whole, we might just get people from all over the Okanagan willing to form a study/practice group. I'm not sure on how to go about starting something like this, so if you, ronin, are willing to help out since you have at least some experience already, that would be awesome!

There is a Kendo Club in Kelowna practising twice a week for 4 years now. Kelowna Kendo Club is the newest part of the Dojo family that includes Zousoukan, UBC Kendo Club and SFU Kendo Club. vnishi@shaw.ca for more info
