Anyone have any ideas on how to prevent the tare from turning. I realize it means I'm doing something wrong in my form, I just can't figure it out. It only happens when we do drills, when it's time for jekiego it stays where it's supposed to. It also doesn’t happen all the time which is odd. I'm wondering if it means I'm not squaring up my shoulders, any thoughts? Is any twisting acceptable (an inch or two) in the tare or is it always supposed to be fixed, i.e., no movement what so ever?

Tie the tare himo tighter.

It probably gets twisted around more in kihon because you're brushing up against your opponent more -- usually on your left side. A little twisting is okay, but you wanna protect your family jewels, right?:ko:

Think less about your shoulders and look to your hips. Especially when you take long strides.

Sometimes I fail to twist my left hip in when the left foot comes in and this causes my Tare to turn.

Maybe its the same for you.

cheers

I find that if I don't tie it tight enough it will move around. Or if I end up doing a lot of taiatari or something.

Wearing a cotton hakama also helps, as the non-cotton hakama tend to be more slippery.

I used to have that problem....then....
I had a sensei tell me once to tie my tare so tight that I feel like cant breathe. As he was a 7th dan police instructor, I immediately followed his advice. I think it has something to do with the fact that having your tare pressed firm against your abdomen helps kiai.

Anyway, next time you tie your tare, from seiza, stand up on your knees and really pull it tight. If you feel like you cant breathe you did it right....if you cant actually breath, try again....counter productive to living and all....

Breath into your lungs (i.e. tuck in you belly) when you tie it.

Tie it a bit higher on yer Bell-eh!
I also had the same issue.
Now I don't!

Thanks Mentos!

It is not tied tight enough. You do not want to obstruct your breathing.

When I keiko with some people, I purposefully turn my tare around.

When you're about to get your butt kicked, you need some protection...

I think my footwork was much better today: I didn't have to fix my tare not once in class :)
