Hi folks,

Read this online newsletter:
http://www.auusoma.com/newsletters/feb_2003.pdf

Pay attention to the advertisement on the top of page 3, regarding kendo.

Will someone explain to me what exactly is "Tiger Tournament Kata"? :)

Good candidate for the baffling budo section on e-budo.com i'd guess.

Anyone feel like emailing "Grand Master Sullivan" to ask what his qualifications are?

This smells like a scam... The more patches the guy has on his dogi the more likely he is to be a fraud.

I like the multi-color certificate you recieve for "graduating" from kendo in 5 weeks. I wonder if "Thanks for your money dipsh*t" is written anywhere on it.

Maybe someday you'll see this guy's students in a shiai, now wouldn't that be interesting? But if it is true that these programs are bullshit, maybe someday they'll die out when everyone knows their true nature.
Is there some legitimate martial arts website that has people go out and check out martial arts practice centers? They could go out and actually review what goes on maybe, sort of like how people review movies and games.

While I personally feel cheated for having wasted 32 years of my life training and traveling back and forth to Japan to learn kendo I can only concluded I was the donkey.
Had I only waited I could have cut it down to 5 weeks. But the add doesn't say you will actually be anything more than the course they are selling. I mean really a five week kendo master is a 5 week kendo master. You get to wear a set of bogu that was actually made in asia instead of Zimbabwe for instance. I have seen Mr Kurukuru's bogu and Zimbabwe bogu is OK its just not asian. : :cool2: : I don't think they mean the Harvard kendo tournament since you have to be a documented undergraduate of a university or college to compete in that one. They probably mean the shinai breaking contest which follows the board breaking event.\Did anyone see any out and out lies? We just are not knowledgable enough to know and understand tiger kata. The good news is after "The Last Samurai" a plethora of new grand masters will emerge to move us forward on the kendo path.

Hey Jeff M.,
Good to read you here! Yea, what were you thinking spending all of that money going to Japan?
Looks like we have a runner up to all the other Martial Arts Bimbo's and Belt collectors like Michael FInn.

Sorry to drag an old thread up, but I caught this thread from another thread, and I found their website. Yes, they do appear to intend to try to compete. Not only that, I thought that as neither the students, sensei(Who knows where he learned if he even did.) or the dojo are members of the AUSKF, they can't compete. Isn't that correct? Apparently they tried to attend it last year.

Here's the info on the Harvard trip:

http://www.auusoma.com/martial_arts_training.html

This leads me to believe they'll try again this year. Somebody wanna meet them? At least now people will be informed if they try to come. Being so untrained as they are, they could hurt somebody if they slip in somehow and actually compete. I certainly would not be too happy to compete against someone with little to no knowledge of any kihon. Not to mention bad tenouchi!

Maybe he's a grandmaster at chess. That's impressive!

The best part is when they mention "Original Wendo Warrior Practice Armor" direct from "the Asia."

I hope they attend the Harvard Shoryuhai, I've always wanted to have some keiko with these "commercial fillers". :)

Please tell me that this is a joke. This can't be for real. Are there many people who fall for this kind of crap? Can't somebody stop them or tell them that what they do is wrong, dangerous, and an insult to the Budo World in general and the Kendo Community in particular? This is what you get if your only aim is to make money. Oh dear, oh dear, what is the world turning into.

"The new belt test will be even more challenging, diverse and, best of all, even more fun"

What kind of whack thinks a black belt test is fun? I mean seriously, saying it's fun is kind of degrading. A black belt test is serious business.

Is that THE super secret tiger kata, the one that once you master it, after five weeks that is, no one can ever defeat you no matter what they do?!?! Oh My God... Where is my check book!!! I am so there!!

Hisham
12th January 2005, 06:10 PM
You'd better believe that, that kata is matchless, it was tested against some big ass flying roaches with a devastating effect :smoker:. When you see that guy using the kata ,there's definitely a tiger smell in the air :jaguar: (there was no tiger face so i went with what was available)

If I'm not mistaken Mr. Sullivan has a masters degree in MARKETING and sells his DOJO MARKETING techniques to anyone willing to pay the highly inflated price. You get the usual pile of crap: accredidation, patches, yadayadayada.... and a big bill every month!

Oh yeah, Kendo must be the NEW TKD thing. Here we go TKD packaged Kendo? Participants screaming SHOWTIME, and Boomboxes Blairing while they do the Tiger Kata!

Forget all this tiger kata business, I'm going to the gals and pals event. I get my nails polished and a hair style in the latest fashion for free!

The name of the event seems to elude to this is actually a different type of event than "meeting" new people.

Note to self: see if I can fit a minimum of 50 patches on a keikogi before GM Sullivan's class.
