(Put this in the Multimedia section as there will be photos to come)

Well folks,

Your Ol' pal Kenzan is about to visit the land of Sushi and Samurais.
I'll be in Osaka first, then traveling down south to Oita prefecture to harass the Snow Monkeys.
This is a Red Letter day for me, as I've been trying to go for about 20 years, but always at the last moment some craptastic obstacle has come flying up from out of nowhere, be it from job change, or family emergency, or Space Slugs from dimension 4Q (But I'd rather not go into that as a apparently I can never go to the County Museum again.)

In fact, this time around, I got fairly sick just a couple of weeks ago, but luckily I have cheated fate and am good to go.

Though I am not bringing Bogu, I plan of visiting quite a few Kendo Dojos while I am there (I understand there may be a few.)
~and hopefully get a Ratulin-worthy Iaito.

So I've packed my anti-Ninja kit, and am off.

I just hope I can find a good Sushi restaurant.

Do you think they'd mind If I brought my wetsuit and snorkel set to the Osen?

-No way I'm showing my naked bits to a bunch of Snow-monkeys.

Pix to follow!
:)

No, I have a wife a kid and have to carry enough of their luggage like the big, dumb pack mule that I am.

Besides, if I smacked up you or your boys too much,
You'd have to commit Seppuku or something,
~and I just couldn't live with that shame,
soooo, I'd have to commit seppuku, then there'd be revenge killings,

It IS a good idea.
I was originally going to Kyoto before Oita, but I heard it's at the peak tourist season so it would be crowded and expensive.
I wanted to see some Samurai theme park they had there..
Oh yes, and I guess they have other stuff there too..

LOL

The dollar being what it is, i decided to catch it next time.

Besides, don't they sell Iaito and bogu at 7-11 next to the Bentos?

Pretty much a universal thing with every sport/martial art. Don't bring your surfboard, you're sight seeing. Don't bring your motorcycle, you're on a walking tour. Don't bring your prophylactics, you're on a quick trip to the clinic for some shots. (((SHRUG)))

Haha, the image of a giant, slightly retarded, warrior squirrel riding a normal sized, slightly fictional, snow monkey is an amusing one...

You'll have a good time dude. Have a cup of that weird jellified lumpy, eggy & fishy juice on me.

I look back on my short trip there with a smile, and a growling belly... developed a taste for that unagi shiz. Nectar.... although their sannies do suck. (and i'm not referring to any kind of femine hygiene product when i say sannies... although i imagine they'd suck somewhat also, lest their application be something different from which I had assumed it was... only ever used one once and it took a month to get the bloody thing out...)

About to go to dinner, and then get all nekkid in the Onsen.

Alive, dazed, and confused.
It took about 18 hours to get here, by planes, trains, and automobiles.

The good news is, my Japanese just got bumped up to the next level.
The bad news is, I still can't understand about half of what people are talking about.
Especially with these strange dialects folks seem to have.

Wow, I have gone through all the Flickr Photos and it looks like you are having a lot of fun and seeing some awesome stuff.

Minus that spider... That thing looks like it came from Hell for the sole purpose of scaring everything on the face of the earth...

The shops, the markets, the nature all looks so cool.

How are prices over there might I ask?

Is the trip something you would consider "expensive"? Are the normal things around town and/or in shops expensive compared to the US?

I am so eager to go, but I really need to figure it out financially.

I am slated to go sometime in late 09 or early 10 with my university, but I would like to go on my own also.

Keep having fun and take some more videos! Preferrably with some witty dialogue! lol

A bit higher for some things, and a bit lower for others, it depends, but I have not seen anything super outrageous either way.
I think it also depends on where you are.
Here in the country, things are fairly cheap.
BTW: I discovered Don Quixote last night..

It's...Erm..interesting..to say the least.

I am so eager to go, but I really need to figure it out financially.

Again, it depends where you want to go. Airfare to Tokyo is cheap, but I understand everything else is outrageous.
Airfare to where I am however, was insanely expensive, but I stayed in a nice Ryokan in Beppu for a night, and room & board plus meals and all you can stand Onsen was only 19,800 Yen.

That's approx $198.00 in U.S. Money, give or take.

I am slated to go sometime in late 09 or early 10 with my university, but I would like to go on my own also.

I am of the opinion that if you go it alone, unless your Japanese is perfect, and even if you can read, you will have a fairly miserable time (at least until you can make a friend to explain things to you.)

Even simple things like getting around using the train, bus, or taxis is a small feat of mental engineering.

Note: Take the ticket on the bus when you get on, and make sure you have the proper amount ready when you get off, or you might get yelled at.

The good news is, most transportation modes (except taxis) often have English signs (sometimes) or even an English speaking announcement, but don't count on it.

This is all to say that it is highly confusing.
Add to that the culture shock, the local dialects, and you are in for a strange time.

It gets better though, and most people here are very helpful to foreigners. Also, many train stations have a Foreign Information office for help as well.

Keep having fun and take some more videos! Preferrably with some witty dialogue! lol

I'm having the time of my life, actually.
I'd better be careful though..I may find myself wanting to move here.

I should mention that these things are HUGE, and EVERYWHERE!

Overall, the bugs here are just..just..just...

ARGGGHH EVERYWHERE!!!

I am not kidding, I saw a Cockroach so big last night, it had a Dog in it's mouth.

And there's even some gargantuan insect varieties that cause the locals to shrug their shoulders when asked:

"OMG WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING!!!"

Just finished a three day Onsen Ryokan and Jinjya tour in the Mountains.....

Neither words nor pictures can describe the experience.

All the trees here in the Mountains are turning brilliant shades of red, yellow, orange and purple.
Even the shadows are colored.

Breathtaking.
It's also really cold up here.

Getting lot of strange looks and gawking from the locals.

You think they'd never seen 6'3 Gaikokujin before.
:D

Same with the Ryokan.
I get the impression some of these don't get many foreigners, if any at all.
The people are very kind and patient for the most part, and the food is sublime.
Lots of Mountain vegetables.

~Never thought I could eat a fish whole.

Also, I think I've got my Iron/Sulfur/(and other various minerals) supplements for life at this point.
The Kenshi here in the mountains seem to take Kendo very seriously.
They seem zealously polite, to the point of overkill.

At one of the Mountain Jinjya dedicated to Hachiman, (The god of war) I saw a team of foreigners video documenting a Kenjutsu demonstration by what apparently was the head Sensei for that Ryuha. Just stumbled across it really.
Very nice to say the least.

More pix to come, but I'm really quite exhausted.

~Taking 5 Onsen per day takes a lot out of you.
LOL

Okasan (She makes me call her that, it's cute)
says that all since they are close to Taiwan, a lot of strange insects and vegetables are popping up.

For example, I found a squash growing in the wild the other day which is hard and spiky. It looks like if you mounted it on a stick you could do some serious damage. lol.

There's also walking stick insects here which are at least a foot long.

Yup. Definitely.

Just found out how little it costs for land and to build a house on it.
It's even cheaper if one of your family members already owns land.

Compared to California, it's practically free.

Though I'll have to see if I can augment the the plans a bit to incorporate higher doorways and larger Ofuro section.
My head feels like a squashed melon.

I think there's a waiver if you bring enough cash.

Which brings me to my second point:

I think I'll get rich selling hot canned coffee from a vending machine in front of my house.

HAH!

It's freezing!

Ahh. I see.

Can that be bitter squash? Or Goya as people in Okinawa call it?
If so, they're edible. Bitter as the name implies, but good when cooked right. The bitterness gets addicting after a while.

When I moved here I found a shop selling goya for ¥100 each, and quickly became addicted.

I want some chanpuru now.

Ahhhh, that's my favorite dish!

My granpa had this beautiful arbor with roses at the gate to the house.
After he got ill, granma killed the roses and planted goya instead.
She's cleary all for the usefulness than the beauty.
So you get hit by those spiky squash as you go through the gate. :ko:

Yeah, I think that's it.
Green spiky squash looking thing.
Okasan called it an "Oni" something or other and said it was bitter, and came from Okinawa.

I was curious, so I bit it.

Today, sadly, I'm leaving for home.
We'll travel to Hakata today and catch a connection to Osaka then to L.A. tomorrow.
Definitely I'm going to eat some famous Hakata Ramen, though I won't get Super Kotteri this time.
I've learned that Kotteri style here basically means you get a bowl of pork lard oatmeal that just happens to have some noodles in it.

See you stateside!

Japanese man blames murders on death of pet dog
An Japanese man accused of killing two people and seriously injuring a third has allegedly blamed his actions on the fact that his pet dog was put down when he was 12.

By Julian Ryall in Tokyo

Takeshi Koizumi, 46, is accused of killing bureaucrat Takehiko Yamaguchi and his wife Michiko last week and stabbing 72-year-old Yasuko Yoshihara.

He was arrested on suspicion of violating the sword and firearms control law while police prepare a murder case against him.

Mr. Yamaguchi was a retired vice minister in the health ministry in Japan, while Mrs. Yoshihara's husband, Kenji, had held the same position.

After the attacks security was tightened in the Kasumigaseki district of ministry building in Tokyo as police searched for an individual who seemed to have a grudge against the government's policies on pensions, in which both men had been involved.

But e-mail messages sent to media on Saturday evening, shortly before Koizumi handed himself in to police, may reveal his true motivations.

"The uprising this time is not a pension terror attack," a message sent to Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc. stated.

"This is revenge for the killing by a healthcare center of a member of my family 34 years ago," the message stated. "Even now, they continue to kill as many as 500,000 innocent pets every year. They need to know that if they continue with this needless butchery then it will come back to them."

Koizumi's rented car contained eight knives, including one covered in blood.

In an interview with the Yomiuri newspaper, the suspect's father confirmed that the family had adopted a stray dog when Koizumi was in elementary school but eventually had it put down because it barked constantly.

He said he received a phone call from his son the night he surrendered to police, the first time he had spoken with him for a decade.

"I want to tell my son to punish himself and not to be so lacking in shame as to stay alive," he said. "I don't know what to say to the family. I really should kill myself.

As if to say:

"NO WAY I'M GOING BACK JUST YET, HOMESLICE!"

I don't blame him.
If I was chained up 24-7 and just got food scraps to eat, I'd be pretty pissed as well.
I bought him a brush and a chew toy, and he didn't know what do do with either of them.

Until I slathered them with Baby-Swiss that is; introducing to him a previously unknown state of deliciousness.

I'm not certain, but I think he had a cheeze-gasm.
