Judgeing by the videos i watched on the site, it isnt that fun. You train for more then 10 years to hit eatchother with sticks? I can go into the backyard and pick up a stick and hit people with it.

So are thoes videos bad or what?

DanielH

Hit with sticks? Its much more than that... besides, have you ever thought that maybe they train so much to be damned good at "hitting each other with sticks"...? Besides, its not simply hitting...

RayOfAsh

Yes it is, so what if you have to do it fancy, anybody and can twirl then hit. And if all your doing is twirling then hitting you can master that in a few days.

aikanaro

Well, it's not just "fancy hitting", there are many aspects other than the hitting technique, but more formative of a discipline, both physical and mental... in my experience it takes *way* more than a few days to master, besides it can be fun and a good sport... my suggestion to you is: why don't you try and do some training at a dojo? it's not the same when you see it frome the inside, and who knows, you might even like it...

It is a lot harder than you think. A lot of times when you look at something you say "oh I can do that it looks easy!" but when you actually try it, sometimes its harder than you think. Say for example you can play basketball, sure you can toss a ball into a hoop, no problem. But what if you go again'st someone who has practiced for years? It's different, and its hard right? I am not saying you are bad, but just think of it that way. Kendo is not so much different, in the fact that it's hard to hit the other person most of the time anyway if they are good. Maybe you don't like kendo at all, but whats the point of posting, maybe you want to find a reason to be interested. There will be more post by others.

DanielH
4th December 2003, 06:52 AM
hehe, I'd love to see you fight someone who has experience... If I read correctly you have to hit people in certain places in certain ways, not like when I used to get bored and "sword" fight with my friends in my back yard... Like Aikanaro said: Try it.

You can say the same thing with any other things.

Soccer: It is no fun to try to get the ball from other guys. You can go to buy a ball and kick it all day long by yourselves
Footbal (American):same thing. Why the quarter back is special. You can get the ball and throw it yourselves in the back yard.
Car racing: Why? You can drive your car all day long.
Marathon: Why practice, you can run around your back yard.

What else, some one please fill me in.

And another thing, my parents wouldnt let me learn a martial art because they say its religious, and another thing is the place is called a Dojo, wich is like a temple for spirtual worship.

Another reason would be i dont have the money(OVER 400 DOLLARS FOR A DOGU OMFG!) to, not to mention i am anti-social(social anxiety disorder i think its spelled). I can buy the Shinai but thats pretty much it.

But i still think the videos are funny lol.

PS. Whats the minimum length of a Shinai. www.swords-online.com has several diffrent lengths.

Hi!

Welcome to the forum!

Ok, 1. Kendo is not a religion. A person can't be afraid to study something just because of it's roots. Shintoism and Buddism is the religion of the Japanese people, and it is NOT harmful. Sure, in some dojos, they bow to a sort of alter, but that's mainly in Japan, because of the culture.(Anybody else know more? Help?) Here in the US and other countries, it is almost always secular(Although, I've never heard of a non-secular dojo in the US yet.), and we bow to the instructor in thanks for being taught. Bowing is a sign of respect. Some dojos, bow to the front of the dojo in respect for the place of training(dojo), as it is just respectful, because you have been taught in a clean, quiet place. There are very good virtues and morals in Kendo. The philosophies presented are well worth studying.

On another note, if you don't mind, are your parents non-religious? As I said before, Kendo isn't a religion. Where on Earth did they get that idea?

If your parents are one of those that are afraid of other religions besides Christianity, then, I'll say the following even though I don't normally talk about religious things... God doesn't want a person to act that way and be prejudiced. I'm not saying you or your parents are. It's just that it would come off that way for thinking that. Giving something or somebody a chance is kinder. God puts things like this here on our planet for a reason, and it is up to us, to make use of what we are given.

2. "Dojo" is Japanese for training hall. Nothing more. You'd better start reading before making observations like these. It is better to be informed, rather than to say something about things that you do not know about.

3. Uniforms aren't that expensive. Mine was 45 dollars for the hakama, 47 dollars for the Keiko-gi. You don't need to buy the most expensive set out there. Besides, a beginner doesn't need it right away. And, it isn't that much to train each month. You just have to ask the sensei of the costs, and it should be pretty low. You only need a shinai and a bokken to begin with for the first few months, until you decide you like it enough to continue, and you ask your sensei if you decide to train, when you can get the uniform. Bogu comes much later, like a year or more, to buy your own, probably.

4. Kendo isn't just hitting people with sticks. It's hard. Do you know what men-uchi is? Or, say, Jodan is, or chudan no kamae is? These are a few techniques out of many, that are used to fight in Kendo. And, do you know how to do proper footwork such as ayumi-ashi and okuri-ashi? These are two different kinds of footwork you have to know. See? There is much more to Kendo than you think there is. There are lots of tiny details that have to be learned and worked out, and a person never ever stop learning, no matter how good one
is.

5. The videos are funny to you, because you don't understand what is happening in the videos. That's ok. To begin learning is to begin understanding.
Heck, I've seen some sparring I thought was funny, because I couldn't believe the person got such a good shot in a way I didn't know was possible. I'm always amazed.

6. Go talk to your parents and ask to try Kendo. You can even show them my post if you'd like. I don't mind, if it would help. Kendo helps a person grow and build confidence. I think you'd really enjoy it! :) Please give what I wrote some thought, ok? :)

There are plenty of Dojos in SD...or so i hear. Anyway...buying shinai beforehand isnt necessary. You can get them through your dojo if you choose to take up Kendo. Hm...the site you gave is pretty interesting. You could buy a reverse bladed katana and run around pretending to be the nth successor of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu...not that I'd suggest doing that...

Heck, I would be happy if I learned some Buddhism from kendo. Budo doesn't have anything to do with Buddhism. At least that's what I think. The heck? I thought there were 2 more kendo clubs total in San Diego? One is at a university and the other one is a dojo somewhere. That's more than plenty right there, man. Haha oh man, are your parents afraid that kendo is going to convert you, or teach you "heathen" ideas? I have a friend that goes to bible study. I'm sorry but your parents need to keep an open-mind. Anyway, kendo instructors are just there to teach you kendo. That's all. If it would make your parents happy, there is a Christian martial arts federation/organization, but they only teach karate and other martial arts.

budo means the way of the martial arts, basically. the kanji is 武道, has nothing to do buddhism at all, the buddhism bu is 佛. Budo is more related to daoism, but daoism isn't a religion, it's a philosophy.

A Jehovas Witness told me god was gonna flood the earth again :(.

Lol, Ima walk around your question cus I cant really define Budo well enough...but Ima say that its best to think of Buddhism as "Practical Personal Therapy" as it's more aimed at helping people out with problems in their life than focusing on spiritual afterlife and stuff =). Cept for pure land...

Eastern Religions tend not to be missionary, so no worries about being converted (Although you might like it more...). I donno...no one asked me, but I like Kendo cus it's easy to grab a shinai and sorta just practice, not worry about bad things going on. Plus it's athletic, hay =D.

Hi!

You're welcome. For the length of hakama and keiko-gi, ask your sensei, when you begin training. Or, do some serious reading about sizing on the bogubag.com website. That's where I got my uniform, and Stroud-sensei, who runs the shop, is really helpful and knows a lot! He's very nice, too. He'll answer any question you've got about that. But, I'd go watch a practice at a dojo first(What new students usually do.), and talk to the sensei, and go from there. :) You won't need everything straight off. Oh, and your sensei will help you know what size shinai to get.

"And i never said they thought Kendo was a religion, just martial arts in general."

Where ever did they get that idea? They must not have seen any martial arts classes or anything. They ought to go see or read about it before they judge it. Drag them down to a Kendo dojo(training hall, NOT temple or place of worship-make sure they learn this!) to watch a practice with you. It's just best to get them involved. They'll be happy to know about what you want to do.

Ok, Here are three dojos. I know the 760 area code is still San Diego County, but forget where Yucca Valley is. But, I listed it anyway. I assume you know where National City is? That's near downtown S.D. Reason I know, is because I used to live in San Marcos in S.D. North County. Hey, doing this search was good for me, because when I visit relatives, I'll get to hopefully visit one of the dojos! :D

Oh, by the way, a shinai for a beginner is only like, 30 dollars and under. You don't need a fancy one. Same with a bokken. You can get one for about 20 dollars or so. You'll need the 1M size, which is the standard.

Here's a link to bogubag.com for bokken(also called bokuto):

http://bogubag.com/Swords/Bokutoh/bokutoh.html

Anyway, here are the dojos...

(essay-ish like post watch out!)

Hi there!

To be honest, at first my parents were also somewhat concerned that I might have run off and joined a religious cult with the whole kendo thing. That all stopped after I explained to them that the most religious we get is with the bowing and saying thank you for a place to practice and thank you for teaching and practicing with each other. After that they were pretty cool about it. Although they still think it is pretty odd that I go twice a week to hit people with sticks :) It is true there is a lot of hitting each other with sticks and sure you could pick up a shinai and learn to hollywood-twirl it pretty quickly but kendo is not just about hitting people; it's also about getting hit. Yes, you learn what to do when someone comes running towards you swinging this sword-like thingy and what to do next. So it teaches critical thinking and gets your reflexes going.

So the whole budo thing... Is really a code of ethics thing developed by samurai and is actually still applicable to modern living. As pointed out earlier it literally means bu (warrior) do (way). It was to be instilled for use in battle and everyday life. If I am correct the main points of it were:

Jin: benevolence
Gi: honor
Rei: courtesy and etiquette
Chi: intellligence
Shin: sincerity
Chu: loyalty
Koh: piety

Now correct me if I am wrong but what parent wouldn't want their children to grow up being more honorable and courteous? :)

Anyways, lots of people enjoy it. All for obviously different reasons. Some physical, some social, some philosophical. It's all good! If your parents are still skeptical why not bring them with you to the dojo when you go to check it out?

Most importantly have fun and welcome to the forum!

I don't think there's anything to be feared in the dojo, even if there's a "picture of a dead person." I personally find a statue of a man being tortured to death as the object of worship fairly spooky!

No-one will try to "convert" you in the dojo. "Conversion" is a Christian concept that by and large doesn't operate in most Japanese religions (with the exception perhaps of Sokka Gakkai, which has learned a thing or two about this from the West). Both Buddhism and Shinto are non-exclusive religions, that not only tolerate but readily accept the idea of adherents holding "other" beliefs. But it's pretty rare outside Japan to find a dojo that has overt connection to either. Most are scrupulously areligious.

It's interesting to note (as I mentioned in another thread) that the girls of Kagoshima Junshin Naginata Club have a statue of the Virgin Mary as their "kamiza".

Just to clear some things out

religious tie in? if it does anything it's about as significant as saying "bless you" when someone sneezez, hardly anyone takes it as seriously as they had before.

some martial arts were started by monks but it's for their defensive purposes since travleing monks are not always safe back in those days and these martial arts don't involve sharp weapon training.

Kendo as you may, or may have not know is (correct me if I'm wrong here) derived from the fighting style of the samurai class, derived being the operative word, therefore it is inaccurate to say samurai used kendo.

and as Ben and others may have pointed out, the only religion (that I'm aware of) that are actively seeking to convert people are Christian religions (plural because of its variety in branches).

virgin mary as the kamiza? that is interesting.

3 kendo dojos in San Diego...

San Diego Kendo Club - Member of SCKO
San Diego Kendo Bu - Member of SCKF
Then there is one group that practices at Miramar college... not sure what they are affiliated with.
(I dont think Hi Desert is in San Diego County).

All in all, if you really wanted, you can find a practice just about every single day of the week here in San Diego... within a 30 minute drive of downtown.

Sorry, I made a mistake... The Mirmar College session is San Diego Kendo Club.

The other group practices up in Carlsbad.... making the third.

Shinai is $20 flat, bokken is $10... you can get it from an e-bogu rep that practices with SDKB and save on shipping.

If you'd like to watch, there is a Saturday beginner/advanced practice at UCSD, Friday free practice at La Jolla YMCA, Beginner practice on Tuesday night at National City dojo, then advanced practice later the same night with SDKB. There is also Friday practice at Mirmar College with SDKC. I don't remember when Carlsbad dojo practices.

If you really would like to learn after watching a few classes, speak with the sensei or yudansha about when and how to start.

Forget about gi and hakama for now... someone will tell you when you are ready for one.... usually about a few months after you start. (putting on hakama too early hides your footwork and the mistakes that you are likely to make as a beginner).

You won't need bogu for a long time after you start... and once you are ready and still cannot afford one, you may find many who are willing to assist by passing on their used bogu (provided that you are sincere about learning and have the right attitude)...

If you are, however, just going to goof around and make light of the activity, (as it appeared in your original post) I suggest that you not start at all. To do so would just be wasting your time and the time of other who take the sport seriously.

I searched all the sites on both federation sites(AUSKF and the Kendo America site) and came up with the three I mentioned, the 3rd being the one in Yucca Valley. Which one was it I missed? I'd love to know. I was going by area codes of the phone numbers, but they've added so many new ones that I must have not recognised one or something, or, the Carlsbad dojo just wasn't listed.

You need to post the name of the dojo, where it is, and the contact information for Ray, of this dojo, please.

The other two I listed with all that, in my last post. :)

Having the Virgin Mary as the Kamiza makes perfect sense. I think it's all about paying tribute to and respecting and requesting the aid of "Divinity" or the "higher power," just like in Alcoholics Anonymous. Depending on your beliefs, you could equally put a picture of a dead person, a plant, a crucifix, or an old Hello Kitty sock in the corner, as long as you can see it as reflecting the divine. If you're a Jedi or even a Dark Lord of the Sith like me, divinity exists in all of those things equally.

travleing monks are not always safe back in those days and these martial arts don't involve sharp weapon training.

you sure are ignorent, of course any morron can pick up a stick and beat the heck out of someone. what we train for is for achieving a perfect cut. the cut that will take out our enemys on the path of enlightment. and for your own experience, go ahead find your self a stick and a kendo dojo, go in and challengge the kendoka-no-shihan (instructo). and see how well it goes.

Perhaps there was something in my message you didn't get, or maybe you are also very good at joking... but my message was sort of going-along with your joke... as in: clap-clap, good joke men!.

I am sorry if I bothered/offended you, it was never my intention.

Even hitting each other with sticks is no laughing matter, practisioners spend decades mastering weapons like the Jo and Bo Staff... and they could destroy you even if you had a sword!

Judgeing by the videos i watched on the site, it isnt that fun. You train for more then 10 years to hit eatchother with sticks? I can go into the backyard and pick up a stick and hit people with it.

So are thoes videos bad or what?

Your comment is just about as stupid as. "Anybody can pick up golf club and hit a ball" or "Anybody can drive car and win an F1 race".

To make comparisons with you doing kendo I could say "Anybody with a just few grey cells can write on a forum". But I see you have not learned to spell yet and have difficulty in that too.
