As the New Year approaches, so does first practice of the year. Does anyone know the Japanese term for Kendo first practice? The folks in Iado use "HATSUNUKI" is that the same for us?

I think the term usually used is "hatsugeiko".
There is also something called "toshigoshigeiko" where you train from new year's eve into the new year.

I have also seen the term "hatsu-shogatsu" when describing the first child born in the new year; hatsu meaning first and shogatsu meaning new year. I wonder is hatsu shogatsu keiko would be proper.

If a newborn can do keiko in their first year, Shoki's one would work, but usually hatsugeiko is the term used. You can use this for iaido as well. Hatsunuki means 'first draw'
