A little off the topuic, but where would be a good place to have tenegui made?
lucian
2nd August 2002, 03:25 AM
tozando can do it but min order 100-200 i think
alexpollijr
2nd August 2002, 03:31 AM
Oh, I see. Thank you so much Lucian. Living in the 3rd world is hard sometimes.
Takenaka-sam, Tozando's tenugui are the best i've used so far. They're big and ready to use. Other ones come in a rigid shape and don't tie adequately until the third wash. But you can make tenugui almost anywhere. Just draw an image of what you want, buy some light cotton fabric and search for these printing services around town.

We don't keep a tenugi in our budokan, we find that raccoons generally make bad house pets. (however, the principal at my new school has a stuffed tanuki in his office.)
However, if you mean a tenegui, we do have some of those....

Heh, Hey Confound, have you ever seen those big stone Tanuki with the 2 big balls in front of pubs and so forth?
Back when I was in Kyushu, a friend and I tried to pinch one( A brilliant idea, deduced while drunk). We carried that big bastard about 50 yards, then went, "ah, sod this!"
Next mornin...afternoon we went out for breakfast and what did I see when we stopped at the lights(traffic)? The big bastard just sitting next to the pedestrian crosswalk. It was pretty surreal...
Heh, I love those fuzzy fellas!

I love tanuki! Before I leave, i'm going to buy a set for myself. they're everywhere here. I like them far more than the meiden neko! (the stupid paw waving cat.)
have you seen the kitsune? the foxes? I like those two, but i've only seen them once or twice.

Speaking of Tenegui... I was wondering if you guys (those who cannot really read Kanji) prefer:-
a) Traditional Tenegui with Sensei's writings/Dojo motto etc. Very stylish Shodo/Calligraphy (not to mention sometimes the calligraphy isn't that great/ they actually write the wrong Kanji!). I also found the writings pretty amusing... say one of my reads "Zettai Bupai", i.e. Absolutly Not Lose.... ha~ Not very good when all day I keep taking people's Men cuts.
b)The souvenir type, i.e. those from Taikai (xxxth anniversary) Sometimes they put too much information on that limited space, resulting in bad design.... Mmm... for national teams, a flag on Tenegui will be great... since last time I saw the Scottish George with a Swedish flag/tenegui!
c)The others...... When I was in a dojo filled with Kids, I saw one of the girls with a pink Hello Kitty tenegui, and another boy with a multi-colour Doraemon (ahh... I hope the dye won't come off). I suppose it will not be difficult to make your own... draw your own etc.
Well, if you can't choose your Zekken, choose your Tenegui! At least everyone has this option, so there's nothing to "Sour grape" about ~

I have a few different tenegui. There's one with a long message in Japanese on it, in calligraphy of course. there are about 40 characters in all, and I have no idea what it says, but it was a gift.
I have a green one with a motto on it, from my old kendou sensei, and a spanky white tenegui with two drawings, one of a kabuki samurai, and the other of a kabuki nobleman. It's very colourful. I had a brown tenegui with a motto on it, but some evil being stole it.

Alas, all my tenugui have cliché writings in kanji. Heijoshin, Mushin, Munem Musou Meikyu Shisui, that kind of stuff. It's kinda classy. The "event tenugui" are usually ugly you know.
And the ones with imagery on them, well, never had one. A friend of mine had one with a huge tiger and other with a flower pattern. I confess I felt envious sometimes.

The big secret to having flashy tenegui (sit down, please) is recognizing that they're nothing more than dishtowels! I kid you not! Same size, same shape, same everything. The cool samurai and kabuki guy tenegui I use was actually a dishtowel that someone gave the school nurse. When she saw my ugly brown tenegui, she gave me the dishtowel. Since then, i've tried out almost every cotton dishtowel on my head. Works just great.
Now bear in mind these are Japanese dish towels, so if you have a big head, you're out of luck. Also, the dishtowels tend to be just a little tiny bit stiffer than an expensive tenegui, they're like the cheaper, thin ones. Still, I use them all the time, and no one has called me on it yet.
That said, anyone want a doraemon tenegui? How about pokemon? or Hello kitty? (what an abomination... even sadder is that i've seen a hello kitty tenegui in use at a competition. the rumours are true, she's taking over the world)

aaaaaarghhhhhh,
sorry for the cry of absolute stupefaction, but I just was astonished that for the first time I agreed with Confound ! maybe because it's the only time you've made much sense, but nevertheless, I confirm the tea towel story (tea towel= dish towel in the UK, folks here DO like tea ...). when i asked my ( Japanese) mother in law to send me some tenugui from japan, she kindly did so. they were a bit small, and did not have much in the sense of decoration of them: just white with lots of blue spots, or the same with a large red kanji in the middle. A bit small as well, but, hey, why not ? It's only when we wnt to the depatou next time i wnent to Japan that I realised that they came from the "kitchen ustensile" section of the shop !
I am still us9ing them, though. However, i have also bought some tenugui from some kendo shops, specialy from kendo. Altough they are quite similar, there is one bit difference: size, the ones for kendo are larger, and i prefer to use them, since they don't fall off my head during training -and annoy my sense (always a bad idea...). i have alos tried some of the tenugui-tea-towel as dish cloth, and they indeed perform admirably !

Well yes, a friend of mine actually has a 'tenugui' that is an AD from a fish shop in Japan.
Good japanese *kendo* tenugui are much nicer though. They're big and soft and don't slip when a beginner strikes conan men on you.

Conan men? I would like to learn that waza, cause I'm a beginer.
It's really apt to create problems to the seniors with their tenugis? ;) Maybe this will allow me to score some ippon.
Ciao!

It's simple.
Step one: abandon the notion of tenouchi. Just grab the tsuka like it was a double-bit axe.
Step two: raise the shinai until the sakigawa lies between your buttocks.
Step three: jump towards the opponent and strike his men on the mengane with all the force you can muster.
Et voila.
Tato
6th August 2002, 02:34 AM
oh!
that waza!
I already used it, a couple of times. Only works if you do all very fast, and after the third time you uses the waza, you must do a lot of running, till you get to safety at home. Impractical at the end, they rum faster then I.
About the Tennugi, we're a small club, so we don't really have tenugis, but if things go well, who knows?
As a wish, I would like to have a good humored tenugui, look at http://www.kukuxumusu.com/web/index_e_cas.php, It not serious, it's not very deep, but it's real cool.
Ciao

note: using this technique will result in "open" season declared on you.
This means that the "conan" being pummelled senseless by everyone with a shinai.

This waza will also stunt the growth of the victim, especially if the striker is a tall (was more than a head taller than me) and strong Swede... I was suprised the shinai didn't break, since (fortunately for me) part of his hit was men-gane.
Ah... the pains of teaching beginners... :)

Try to get the tip to go to the outside of the right hip. Also make sure that the tip travels in nothing like a straight line, especially on the down-swing.

<points to a chewbacca poster>
This is Chewbacca. Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor, with a bunch of small, furry Ewoks. Now, I ask you, "Why would an 8 foot tall shaggy being want to live in trees with a bunch of teeny weeny tiny Ewoks? I don't know why! But I'll tell you this: That DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!
"Now, as you see, Antonin's rebuttal of my incoherence draws directly on an incorrect definition of 'sense'. That does not make sense!
"As you can see, ladies and gentlemen, there is a fundamental flaw here: It does NOT MAKE SENSE.
"Thus, if Chewbacca lives on Endor, you MUST DISAGREE with ANTONIN."
(fake apologies to south park for an unrepentant, and poor rip off)
