Hey there,
I'm buying myself my first bogu tonight. I've been training with my schools bogu for about two years now, but I often find that my sempai's strike really hurt and leave me with a disturbing headache. Lord knows, I've seen what happened to Lindros.

So, I'm thinking about getting some men padding for my men. The only thing is, we currently have a large men and it's always tight. I'm wondering if anyone has tried the thin and thick paddings and what they though of them.

Thanks
Eric

Bogu that fit you properly should protect you better. Men padding would help too, though I think the best solution would be to ask your senpai to not hit too hard. Maybe mention it to your sensei so he can ask everyone to do so.

The thick and thin pads change the size of the men allowing people to wear a men that's too big for them. For instance a 68cm men is too big for me but if I put a thin men pad in it is about right. A 66cm men is my size, I can't fit my head in with the thin pad in. The thick pad is huge, I can't imagine you being able to use one in a men that your managing to wear without a pad or extra towel.

I can't even bring myself to ask people at my level or below not to lumberjack me; can't imagine saying that to my seniors. Your dojo must be a more open place than ours.

To the OP:

If you are getting disturbing headaches, you should stop, get a men that fits correctly with a pad, and ask for help in making sure it's sized correctly. If you are still getting disturbing headaches you should see a doctor or quit.

Btw, YMMV, but I didn't feel like my men really fit until I'd been wearing it for five months and getting hit hurt progressively less as I reached that point. And sometimes someone still lumberjacks me, whether because they are a beginner or just missed, and it still hurts. I'm sure I do that too by accident sometimes. Sometimes I get hit in the elbow or above the doh too. Comes with the territory.

My men was custom fit for me, but I also use a very thin men pad to add extra cushion for those right handed hitters. You can get a standard men pad from online retailers such as ebogu and the now defunct eguchi.

I use a thin men pad and that does the trick. As was mentioned in an earlier post, a men that fits well is key.

If the men wiggles or the chin and forehead are not placed correctly then you are at risk for an injury.

I used to get those headaches and went to a doctor. I advise the same for you if you are getting headaches. It can be a bad thing.

club bogu is not famous for being particularly high quality. Skip the men pad for now. Once you get your bogu see how it feels then if it still hurts get one. But having it right off the bat will just make you dependent on them.
Good luck! :D

edit: until you can get your own bogu, a men pad would probably be a good idea. Your head is important :P

If someone is hitting you with that much force then no padding is really going to help, the thing you have to find out is; is it the padding on the men or are his strikes too hard. Chances are if it's your sensei the padding is too thin, I would think that club bogu is pretty worn but ask other students to see if they think your sensei hits too hard. I have a large men pad in mine and when someone tries to cut to the floor on me it doesn't help much, sometimes I swear I'm shorter after practice.
