ooookay, i don't know what I was on that morning, but here's what happened

we were having a special practice led by a sensei that is not of my dojo..
when we were putting on our men's, i screwed up the knot and took an extra long time..i was totally embarrassed...mainly because I JUST got my shodan, and because I *never* ever take more than 1 min to put my men on..

once i got up, the sensei suddenly said (not in an angry tone) that we should all practice putting mens on (he wasn't pointing at me, but I knew he meant me)..i felt horrible....

should I be worried? what would you be thinking if you were a sensei, and a shodan was taking such a long time?

I wouldn't worry about it. That was probably his way of saying to you "Don't take so long next time". Better to have it on properly instead of quick and sloppy.

When I just started out I had trouble putting on my tenugui properly.
And at a seminar I took so long putting on my men that I was told to just
practice putting on my men.
So all I did that day was putting on my men and taking it off and putting it on etc etc...
Turned out ok though ;)

Worrying is bad for your health. So try to avoid it ;)

4doormadman-

Don't be worried/embaressed about it, those things happen in kendo. There are times when I can tie my men on perfectly and snug...but also a few times when for no good reason my fingers refuse to make the right knot...or when the tenegui keeps slipping from my fingers. Congratulations on the shodan by the way.

Things like that happens to anyone including sensei ( one sensei broke himo while putting men on ). The proper etiquette(spell?) is to back off from the line, correct whatever is not right and get back on the line. Trying to get thing right there and make everyone wait till you finish is not the right thing to do..

Also, tying your men-himo is particularly difficult when your men is still new and stiff. If your bogu is new it will take a while to break it in.
Don't let it worry you.

That's horrific. I can't believe what happened. What have you done? You have desecrated a sacred tradition. Your ineptitude at tying the men-himo is a gigantic blunder. All of your dojo-mates are against you. This holiday was completely and utterly ruined. Your sensei must be losing many hours of sleep over this unpleasant situation.

You shouldn't be sleeping either.

One question here. Did the sensei know who he was working with? A bunch of beginners or seasoned kenshi? Maybe he is just a bit frustrated that practice is being shortened because people don't know how to put their men on.

Sorta corny on my part, but when I come to practice, I'm not there to waste time. I have lots of other things happening so I want to get as much out of practice as I can. Waiting too long to do simple tasks takes away from the time I have that I can be practicing. Maybe your visiting sensei wanted to do the same since he was there only once for that special renshu.

But all in all, don't worry too much about it. Even experienced kenshi forget or somehow screw up on simple stuff at times.Just learn from this experience and move on.

I second that! I just got bogu less than two weeks ago and it's still tough to tie around my head! :D

It's getting better though.

I doubt that a sensei is really worried so much abuot putting on the men.
If it were me, i'd pay more attention to see if the _actual_ kendo is right, rather than something as pointless as that.

The quality of questions (and this forum) is going down to dogs.

I don't know why everyone is trying to comfort this guy but I think he's kind of retarded for taking a minute to put on his men. Maybe this sensei actually wants you to put on your men faster...it's not embarrassing but in Japan they could put on their men in 10 seconds or less (they have the tenegui prepared prior) because the lines for jigeiko is on a first come first serve basis. I mean let's get reasonable, you are shodan...shouldn't you be putting on your men faster and as an example for the other students?

People might say, "oh you're gonna get sloppy if you put it on that fast" then don't put the men on in 10 seconds, try 15, an extra 5 seconds to make sure your himo are lined properly. If you think about it, that's all that differentiates between a sloppy men and a clean one, if the himos are next to each other and lined properly. You can even do that while standing up.

If I was the visiting sensei and knew a shodan was taking extra long, i'd personal think he's retarded. I'm serious, he's shodan, he should have a lot of practice putting on his men and should be getting his men on as fast as other yudansha to encourage the kyu ranks to go faster, too. I mean, sure if his kendo is really good I might not think he's that retarded any more but for that whole practice I'm gonna think that.

Good thing I'm not a sensei though.

You shouldn't be worried, listen to his advice, practice putting on your men.

Hey Will, what do you have against retarted people?
I've actually put on my men without putting on my do first.
I've also started putting on my hakama before putting on my keikogi.
Want retarded? Look no further.

Here's something that is fairly unorthodox. Some people (in order to avoid tatemusubi on our do himo) start with the do on backwards and tie the two lower do himo first. ONce that is done, we turn our do around so that it is facing the right way again, then tie the two upper do himo. Couple of people (like myself) do this at my dojo. Got some wierd stares from other people at other dojos, but come test day, we had nobody with "tatemusubi". awwwww yeeeaaaa...
