I'm really impressed - though simplistic, the sketchy and weaving lines only add to the sense of motion and movement within the bouts. If only it were on a t-shirt... :D
frederico
19-12-2003, 07:48 AM
thanks guys, so many replies.. you are all great!
i did it in photoshop with a wacom, about 100% opacity in the brush so thats why it looks flashy(vectorial), but i did it really fast, no more than 5 minutes per each, the wonders of wacom...
its awesome that someone wants to have it in a shirt, my ego is in the sky!! i cant do a shirt cose there is no money. but i would be totally happy if my art would be used as kendo promotional stuff... i wish..
CKohalyk, i can do higher res next time, this ones were really fast i didnt really bothered with res.. i wasnt hoping so much love from people:)if i resize those to 1600 they will look crappy, i guess.. becouse the images are simple it could be used some vectorial program to trace them, but i dont have any vectorial softwere now. ill sure be more concerned with resolution for the next ones ill do(and ill have time soon).
thanks everyone again for the kind comments.

Mr Tvola i have a graphire 2, the less expensive one.
Thats a cool one. But now there is new Graphire 3 with bigger working area (A5) , I think I will buy this one (although I will have to wait few months before it reaches here). But it costs about 200 USD, until recently the only A5-size tablet was wacom intuos2 a5, which is about 2-3 times more expensive :-(
And sorry for being off-topic to the others :-) When I finaly got it I promise to post some pictures of my own :-)
ken2 and ken9 are my fave's
I like duotones and the blotchyness gave it some tension.

nice work, frederico. i showed the pix to my girlfriend, who is a painter, and she really liked them, especially the fifth one with the foot, and the second black one. have you heard of www.wetcanvas.com (http://www.wetcanvas.com)? if you do this a lot (are a "professional" artist), and/or are studying art/design, you might be interested, as you can get lots of feedback there (including critique) from other artists.
anyway, thanx for posting those great pix and keep it up! :)

Have you tried drawing from life (ie, as in during a dojo during keiko)? I would be you could get some pretty cool gestures that way. I think I might like to try that during summer when I am back from college, get some combined kendo and drawing practice :)

ok now with more time:
Mr.Tvola i use photoshop for this becouse its simple shapes, and ps is faster for that, but painter is pretty much great with that blenders they have for more "shaded" stuff.
taiwnezboi - no i dont work yet, i study design, but i can pretty much follow ilustration at some level, thats a path ill have to see what happens in the future.
LNGUYEN - you have shirts here (http://www.cafepress.com/kendoshape), thanks, if you buy.. it will be my first sell;)
jodonnell - i dont draw kendo from life becouse i prefer to train:) but in kendo people are always moving so what you have is to capture the moment in your head, and if you train you also know where everything should be, so its easier to do from memory.
baka - unfortunatly there is no naginata in portugal, and its not the same thing doing it from movies:1, but ill give it s shot;)
and thanks again for everyone else too for the kind words;)

Your artwork is excellent and would like to use them as background images on the menu screens of a DVD I am compiling of the recent Australian ACT Kendo open competition.
I will not use them with out your authorisation so please send me a private message to continue discussing this opportunity. If I do use them, I will certainly create your own section of the DVD displaying your artwork and links to your retail web sites.

I just found this thread, I think the designs are really good and I think the shop is a great idea. How much of the cut do you get from the service?
Is there anything that can be done if you want a design combination that is not available in the shop?
sketchy
frederico
29-06-2004, 06:16 AM
Hi sketchy,
i have a base price from what i can make my own price, i usually just add $0.6 to $0.8 so that in a $15 shirt is about 5% or less i that i make from it.
If you wanna buy a diferent design/combination you can just ask me, since ive not made many sales i dont have any design that is selling too much to make it importante, so there wouldnt be a problem in changing it.

Frederico, it just occured to me. Why don´t you try contacting one (or more than one) of the bogu retailers (bogubag, e-bogu, etc.) and try to make some kind of deal so they sell them in their shop?

Im gettin a shirt and a sticker for my locker! What an awesome idea! Sell it to bogubag fredrico! You're gonna get rich that way
frederico
20-07-2004, 05:44 AM
thanks everyone for you interest on it, you give me great motivation.
a deal with one of those bogu shops would be great in terms of publicity, would have much more visibility, but its not that simple, i dont do the shirts just the art, so i would have so sell the copyrights or licences(that i dont want too) and they would have to do all the printing work.
Cafepress is fine for now and also haves a variety of products that people wouldnt have access other way, becouse the bogu shop its not directed for this kind of stuff, so i think people are better served this way, and one way or the other i would not get rich with it:p
greets everyone, ill do more stuff when i get free of schoolworks;)

emitbrownne, great to know that, i only use photoshop becouse of its simplicity, there is corel painter that simulates natural brushes, but i never get used to it. also, i tried some time ago a free software, also to simulate real painting, http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html dunno what the new version it like, the one i used didnt even had zoom, but the brushes were sweet, give it a try.
bokkenbreaker83 glad you liked it;)

Hey... Corel's Painter is SUPER POWERFUL and I highly recommand it to anyone with a tablet!!
Frederico, I know your style is clean and bold, but you can try doing more complicated things in Painter, like different brushstrokes, paper pattern(including watercolour paper absorbancy).. or something that simulates oil paint shades.
Here's some non-kendo related drawings I did purely on a tablet with Painter back in 2000:-

Here's some non-kendo related drawings I did purely on a tablet with Painter back in 2000:-

...Wow. I've been trying for years to draw that good(Well, still am). Those are really great! Nice job on coloring it too!

emitbrownne, great to know that, i only use photoshop becouse of its simplicity, there is corel painter that simulates natural brushes, but i never get used to it. also, i tried some time ago a free software, also to simulate real painting, http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html dunno what the new version it like, the one i used didnt even had zoom, but the brushes were sweet, give it a try.
I Love the paint effects... I'm now gonna have to have a a word with our graphics department at work to see if I can get a license for Correl.
thanks :D

Yeah Corel Painter is awesome good. I've seen absolutely amazing graphics done with it.
Mingshi, those are some really cool artwork! You're really talented *_*
Does anyone here know of Oekaki or PaintBBS? It's really good and you can do amazing things with just a tablet. Plus it's user-friendly & easy to use.
To Frederico : Wow I love your art.... They look so natural. Really simple yet.... detailed XD Do you take long to do them?

I used to use a Pchat / Oekaki, but I dont have a tablet. Drawing with a mouse became troublesome.
