View Full Version : Goals for the new year?

Turning over the year has always been a good time for setting new goals and a good piece of advice I was given a few years ago was to set a couple of 'easy' short term goals and a more long term one.
My short term goals:
Still moving my hands around too much in jodan ( 1 month) (Yesterday I saw video from my last competition, yuck).
Fumikomi needs improving (3 months)
Footwork needs to be smoother. (6 months)
Get ready for san-dan grading (Elligeble in December).

Good idea. Being a beginner (1yr experience right now) i have chosen the following:
Short term:
Improve Fumikomiashi (almost ruined my heel over the last weeks)
Less "half-hearted" waza
Improve Te-no-Uchi (focus on right elbow)
make the next two kyu gradings which is 3rd and 2nd in my case in 2004. See different thread about grading "politics" in Germany.
Good luck to your sandan grading!

My goal is to start. Actually begin kendo, for the first time. I've been reading over this forum for about a month, so I guess it looks good.
If i had a long term goal it would be not quitting kendo. Of course that could mean doing it for 10-50 years.

10 to 50 years !?! thats a pretty wide range... i plan to do kendo as long as it is possible, ie. i'll quit if i have no other choice...

Make it to 2nd kyu, and make my cuts smoother and more accurate.

Lately, our dojo hasn't been practicing because we needed to find a new facility. We were able to get a sponsorship from an aikido instructor at a local college, so my goal is to practice as hard as possible, improve, and atleast become competant in jigeiko. But I guess my short term goal is helping my sensei get this club rolling again.

I will lose weight and stop being lazy. (short term)
I will keep off the weight and continue to be less lazy (long term)
Would like to try and improve breathing, so that I can perform Kiri-kaeshi properly, and I would like to be able to control the centre line better.

I will carry over one goal from the other post since tryouts are probably early next year and in addition to that:
1.) I will rehab myself back into tournament shape. Buttloads of Kakarigeiko and uchikomi for sure.
2.) Practice my Michael Jordan waza. Head always snaps back when I do that... Gotta keep that head straight.
3.) Add to my toolkit of waza.

I definitly have some stuff to do this coming year...
- Trying not to lift my back foot too much when I jump forward far.
- Learning how to get a winning mentality (currently i dont care if I loose in shiai, this should change)
- Getting in better shape
- Making more effort to improve overall
Hmm...
- Lose weight to become faster
- stop leaning forward when I do men
- Maybe learn jodan
- destroy Samurai999 in the tournament after he thinks he's back in tournament shape (or before, either way it will be humilitating for him)
- laugh at him maniacally for losing to a kid and not representing his wannabe college
- steal his toolkit of waza (it saves me time from thinking up of stuff)
- beat YOU (yes you on the computer)

Will, don't worry about destroying my ego or putting me in my place. Going up against Shig last week and Arnold "the Terminator" Matsuda next week will take care of that.
I do represent my college. The college that I went to for 5 years. UCD!
You can't hope to repeat the "thugonomics" waza that I'm gonna create over break. LOL

I just heard a radio interview with Angelina Jolie ( a review of TR 2)
She said that she was going to continue training in Kendo
so for 2004
Id like to find what dojo shes training in and
a) attend
b) emigrate if necessary ;-)
Happy new year to all KW members

uh...since it's your third month of kendo, maybe you shouldn't practice tsuki. It's a very dangerous technique that usually is only allowed for shodan and above.

-gain weight
Interesting. Can you explain why and give some more details? I don't think more weight is an advantage in kendo. Makes you slow.
At our dojo we have a 4th dan which is about my height (6 feet something) and weighs about 170 lbs. Gives him a hugh advantage in speed compared with other guys his rank.
Being a 4th dan he can also easily withstand bigger (heavier) guys, who are trying to push him around. So, where is weight advantage?

You ask why I want to gain weight? your sensei is about 170 lbs and 6 feet? that's about 77kg and around 1.80 m, I'm about 5.7 feet (1.75M) and 132lbs (60kg) it's less related to kendo and more related to the fact I'm underweight, like I said gain weight not get fatter, that and I look like walking skeleton
Short term:
Improve men uchi
Improve kote/men waza
Lose fat
Long term:
Score with a confident men strike
Better understanding of semei
Improve ability to see and act on openings
Lose more fat

Actually as I learned Tsuki is good to work on that twisting of the wrist thing that adds the extra pop to your waza, there is a proper term for it but it doesn't come to mind right now.

HH, I think it's called "sae".
My goals for this year are based around preparing for my godan shinsa -- if they have one at the AKC this year (???). So by the time of the grading I want to be:
- physically able to perform all my waza at 5 dan level (whatever that is) even on a bad day
- mentally able not to care too much about trying to be 5 dan.
Being able to put myself fully on the line without investing my ego in the outcome, and to do that EVERY time I train - not just on special occasions - that's what I'm trying to do. I think my kendo's getting slower but the great thing about getting older is feeling like I'm really finding my own "michi" in kendo.
Isn't it great to find something that you love that you know you'll do 'til your dying day?
Ganbarimasho!
