Howdy ya'll, I'm new to this sport but excited to learn. Can anybody please recommend the best school in So Cali to train? I heard the Norwalk Dojo is pretty tough and produces champions.

I know I can learn starting anywhere, but I want to pick the best instructor so that I may stay loyal to one school.

Thanks

ummm.... Any school can produce a "champion". It all depends on what level of effort you are willing to put into each practice and how much you are willing to learn. As far as I know every So Cal dojo is pretty good. Almost all of them produce kenshi who compete in the US and World tournaments. That is what I'm advising if your question is "which is the best dojo/who is the best instructor". Ask moocow, tenken, mrkurukuru, hongs, etc. I might be moving down there if i find a job in a year or two so you might have some company.

In all honesty, I'd have to say you'll need to attend more than one dojo. All Sensei have their own little things they like to work on. To get all the work you can you need to work on everything. That means going to more than one dojo. I try to go to two dojos a week. Been a little lazy over the holidays but will be starting up again next week. :cross_eye

The best instructor is the one you'll stay loyal to right? And you're definitely not gonna stay loyal to the instructor who teaches 2 and a half hours away... They're all good dojos with high quality kenshii, except Hongsermeier (he sucks), so you should be fine wherever you go. Besides, as a beginner, most dojos teach you the same way, your level of development depends on what samurai999 said, how hard YOU try and how much YOU are willing to learn.

Secondly, Tim...first you betray me by going to a horrible school, leave me off your allstar team, and now you're going to southern california...you animal. I hate you.

Most of the So. Cal schools are good. Some of it will depend on you, some will depend on them.
I would Suggest Costa Mesa or Norwalk if your within driving distance.
Stating any of these are "The Best" is not what I'm getting at, just the schools I have liked.

1.) Does Cal have an Aero/Astro department? No.

2.) That was an honest mistake. You're coming to godo keiko right?

3.) I'll have to go where the jobs are in the aerospace industry. Plus, part of my roots are in Covina. Maybe there is some strange attractive force drawing me back there.. ~oooooooooooooooo~ HEy, maybe I'll find another job here in the bay area... ya right...

Thanks for the feedback guys--much appreciated. Just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with OCB in Anaheim? Thoughts?

OCB aka OCBC has a really nice gym that they do keiko in. They have turned out some good kenshi like jason yamamoto, hashimoto kuni, kino, goya yoshiyuki. It’s a pretty hard nosed dojo that stresses discipline. No matter what dojo you go to, I believe it’s up to you to get better. Sure some people like being drilled on kihon, but some people like to go wild and experiment; eventually (12 years or more) you will be able to everything decently (not perfectly, but decently). But yea don’t worry about the dojo, just worry about your dedication and stuff. Oh yea!!! Hey no cal dudes!!! Can’t wait to get you into our house!!! Now you will be all tired from making the trip down hear!!!!! Oh and to show that we are not enemies, I will suggest that you not buy nachos from the ice cream truck, they have been known to make people barf! There is however a place that sells Hiroshima style okonomiyaki and takoyaki down Carson; just ask someone about it at the tournament.
