New episode on Dave, good Friday at 9pm.

I'm definitely going to watch it in the hope that awesome will prevail. Some episodes were brilliant but some did stink a little... must have been the vindaloos ;)

Any fans?

Of vindaloo that is...

I used to watch Red Dwarf late at night on my BW portable TV [technically can you call it Red Dwarf if you watch it in black and white?]. I have so many deep rooted memories every time I hear that theme. As much as I enjoyed the later shows the early ones were so special to me seeing the guy cleaning the Red Dwarf words on the side of the space shipwas as poignant as a pre-pubescent could get back then. Any repeats I've seen that replace the glorious models with CGI, sacrilege! Red Dwarf was so cute as a stubby little thing with what appeared to be a rock in the middle of it, that long thing they redesigned it as was bleurgh!

Apparently Starbug is made out of a Smart Car, and it was made by a fan, I hope not to have my hopes dashed. Luckily there's a new Dr Who on as well to save the day, just in case.

Any word on whether or not Rob Grant helped write the new episodes? The whole series started haemorrhaging humour once him and Naylor stopped working together. Definitely good to see more Red Dward though.

The one thing that worries me about it all is the claim that

"The special effects will be better, bigger!"

The old Red Dwarf was described as the "Crossroads of Sci-Fi"* and some of the sets and effects were a little ropey, but it was good.

Now, I've found that as the effects get better the jokes get worse, there is a reliance on them rather than what made the series good. I hope, more than anything that this will not be the case.

*Note to Americans and other aliens: Crossroads was a badly made, cheap soap based in a motel. It was awful, but we britst loved it

I'm led to believe Rob Grant wrote the script. As for being worried about too many/too expensive 'special effects,' I was reassured to hear that one scene was filmed on the set of a famous British soap opera... Is that low-tech enough?

I've rung my wife from the phonebox on the corner. When I worked for Granada a couple of times we stole onto the set. I couldn't believe it actually worked.

There have been some very good bits and some mediocre bits. Strangely 'Big Suze' is the worst bit in my book. Some of the CGI has been very good, some of the special effects have been 'vintage' shall we say. So far I liked the fact Reg Wharf was in the middle of a game of Warhammer the most...

I wasn't expecting so many Blade Runner references.

"I'm Dwayne Dibley!?" so funny.

But there is also:

"Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfast"

and

"Stoke me a clipper I'll be back for breakfast . . . or something"

Aww yes.

I nearly forgot about 'Ace' Rimmer! That was superb!

I also like the episode when Kryton was to be replaced with an upgrade. Who impressed by placing a brick in front of him, unzipped...and then broke it in two 'karate' style (albeit, "look Ma, no hands").

Apart from we two, can anyone else do this?
