Hi!
I can't promise you anything, but I have found a Kendo class offered there, at a community center, and just sent off an e-mail asking them about it. It may or may not be still taught there, or, it may not be real Kendo. We will see. The thing is, there is no AUSKF(All US Kendo Federation) affiliated dojo in either Missouri or Kansas. So, I'm a bit skeptical. I will let you know when I get a reply. Give me several days, ok? Thanks.

I have been trying to find out information on this community center class too. If you find out who is teaching it and any other info it would be appreciated. There is a couple of practices in St.Louis, the university one may not be active.

I e-mailed them yesterday. That community center is the same one I found yesterday. I just didn't say, just in case. I didn't want to disappoint you, if it wasn't going to happen. I asked who is teaching it, who they are affiliated with(as in AUSKF), and their rank. I really hope I get a reply soon. If I do get a reply, I will tell you what I find out.
Hey, I didn't know about the St. Louis one... I'm glad you found that, Marsten-sensei.
Casey, don't scoff at once a week. I'd give a lot to go once a week. Consider yourself lucky! I only get to go twice a month, and consider myself very lucky I have a Mom who will drive me even that much. And, my dojo is very far...2 1/2 hours one way. So, be happy, ok? :) You can practice lots on your own between practices. :)

You better tell us what dojos they are. There is legit Kendo and sometimes, non-legit "Kendo" done by karate teachers who do not really know Kendo, but say they teach it. Granted, there may BE a Karate teacher who is licensed to teach kendo, but it is best to check them out carefully. We can tell you if they are for real. You want a real Kendo sensei. Please forgive me for not knowing, but where is Topeka? Which state? So, get all the info, the sensei of these dojos, etc. and post it here. The more experienced Kenshi here will know who is who, and can tell you if the dojo is good or not, ok?

There used to actually be a Kendo club in Leavenworth, they met in the racketball court at some kind of community center (maybe it was a church? I only went there once). That was about five years ago though...

If I remember correctly the person at Levenworth was a Japanese military attache. At the time I ran across this it appeared that it was not a permanent established practice. Seems to me I searched down through the Kansas page on Japanese cultural activities. The St. Louis club is affiliated with the MWKF and I think we have them listed on the Kendo America site. The contact person is Shawn McGowen.
I also back up 100% what Kaoru said about checking out the school. More and more we are seeing strip mall kendo "sensei". These folks are totally unqualified to be teaching since all they do is give a false perspective of how to do kendo and what kendo is. One of the funniest I remember was this guy with his hakama on backwards doing an iaido demo.
Also as far as one day a week goes, as I say to my beginners, first show me you can show up one day a week and then will talk about additional days. It is not necessary to go to the dojo to do 1000 suburi everyday. Yet all of these "I want to come more often" beginners never do suburi once during the week, never mind everyday.

seeing as how i've never had any type of martial arts training, let alone kendo, i'm not too sure of what you just said. but i will definately do more research into it. i'm only dissapointed that it's once a week because i like to do things to the fullest, but if that's more than enough for what the sensei wants, i will be happy to oblige.
Our group do practice twice a week at Brookridge Park in Overland Park (Wednesday 18:30-20:00, Saturday 10:00-about 12:30). If you are interested in visiting us, please email to me prior to your visit so that I can inform my friend who is the organizer of the keiko.anyone know of any?
