i just wanted to know how much everyone pays to do kendo a year, and if they bought equipment how much it was, i only pay 70 euros a year and got bogu on loan with that...
i found this surprisingly cheap, since this is the biggest club in belgium i think, it has 5 dojos, and a new one starting in mid 2004...
so could everyone reading this, just tell us about how much you pay for kendo?

We train through the YMCA, they charge about $CDN25/month (~15 euro, ~19 USD), or free for Y members. We rent bogu for $CDN40/year. So, cheap like borscht.

I paid around 350 euro for the clothes, and I just ordered a new bogu (670 euro). At my dojo, we've got to pay 25 euro a month. Where is that new dojo (seishinkan right?) ?

I pay about US$5/month to train with a club in Bangkok.
So far I haven't bought any equipment (waiting to get a group together for an order so we can split freight). I should be getting my hakama and gi next week, and that'll cost about US$50.

I pay 40 euro in yearly club fees and 75 euro twice a year in training fees.
Add to that tournament- and training camps costs.
But that`s nothing compared to what I pay for Bogu, Shinai and Hakama/Gi, those things bleed me dry.
Still, worth every penny! Or is it cent with euros?

My sports center membership is £50/71 euros a year and my kendo club charges £6/8.50 euros a month on top of that. (Using club bogu is free!)

so could everyone reading this, just tell us about how much you pay for kendo?Let's see...
There's the registration fee for the dojo - $30 a year.
The federation fee - $50 a year.
And the club fee - $125 a quarter.
No wonder I'm broke.
Ah yes, there's no club bogu, either.

I think the reason yours may be so cheap, is because it is such a big dojo with so many members. Usually the cost of taking kendo is to pay for rental of space, and thats expensive. So if it is the biggest dojo in Belgium as you say, they can charge less per person and still make the cost for rental of space.

I don't train in an AUSKF dojo yet, but I plan to alongside my current training in the USCKF dojo I attend. Originally, my sensei was a facilities manager for an athletic club, so I only had to pay for visitors admission ($5 USD.) All other expenses were related to equipment -- my instructor even provides me with bogu, so it's a pretty sweet deal. Anyway, we're changing locations and becoming a club at a junior college. I think there will be a club fee to pay the college, but I haven't heard much about it yet.

I wish I got that from you signature but I don't. I only know hiragana and I'm still learning katakana. I knew you were from ssk because I saw you at the belgian kendo championships and at the nakakura seminar. I from butokukan

It's not like kendo is a part of the program at every Y. We just asked if they wanted us as a program, and they said yes, nice complement to the judo and karate they were already running. Works out great for us - central location, showers, decent gym, and the Y worries about all the registration/money issues. Being at the Y also has the advantage of instant credibility and a certain amount of publicity, so it's been good for overall membership.

I have to pay 147 a month until I get a contract. After that it will depend on how long I ge the contract for... I think 120 a month with a six month contract and 100 a month if I get one for one year.

I go to a college dojo.
30 USD a semester
35 USD for a shinai (through them)
and I you can get your bogu yourself, or I think the university has some that you can borrow.

Here in Germany I pay 110 Euro/year in my Dojo plus membership in German Kendo Union (28 Euro / year). When you start praciticing Kendo you need a "Kendo passport" in which your tournament results, gradings and courses are noted. I cannot remember how expensive this passport was, but you keep it for many, many years. I payed 700 Euro for my Bogu.
Kendo costs in Germany vary from Dojo to Dojo, but the Kendo passport and the yearly membership in the Kendo Union is an obligation if you want to achieve new gradings.
Btw. we had visit from the Belgium National Team on a course last autumn - they were really good

Here in the Eastern US, it was US$25-90 ($90 being in places like NYC, and $25 in smaller cities I've heard). Think it was $60 for the AUSKF Fee, something like $20 for the annual fee at our particular dojo. It's at a local gym where we rent out a large basket ball court twice a week. Equipment's not provided...who wants to wear my smelly stuff after I'm done with it. Seminars range around US$20 or so. I think we should start fronting the money for students and have them pay it off over 3-6 months. Maybe the initial amount for kendo scares some people off. $350-400 for the bogu, $20 for the shinai, $80 for hakama and gi...risky though.....
