Woohoo, Ive discovered a new form of training =D! Now at first some of you may disagree, but once you try it you'll be hooked! This unique form is something I like to call "Dance Dance Revolution"! Yes, it is in fact a video game...But a very educational one =). Now, I may be wrong, but I got to thinking after my third straight day of playing that this game was really helping my foot-eye coordination! It really builds a sense of balance, reflex, and rhythm(sp?) (lots, and lots of rhythm), which of course Musashi places much emphasis on in his Book of the Five Rings. So whadda ya guys think? Does DDR actually help Kendo skills, or am I just trying to console myself for playing a video game instead of practicing? ;)

mwhahahaha that's what I was sayin' in the past hahha. DDR just helps with your endurance as far as I can see, and keeps you light on your feet (depends on the song and mode you're playing). Bah, I'm a retired DDR freak. Try playing for 8 hours straight next time. Oh yeah, my cousin lost a lot of weight from that game o_O.

The day I got it I played from about 4 to 11, and the next day it was off and on all day =). Yes, lots of endurance, but footwork drills are a lot more intense it seems =). My brother just got another pad, so Im gonna go over there soon and play for the rest of the day =D.

i suck at DDR... when i went to korea everyone was into it, and you could see small 9 year old kids playing in arcades, when i tried for myself, well... it was humiliating... never tried since... could there be a kendo style DDR coming up soon? tht wld be koooool~, like u step how u like on the floor-console-thingy, and ur character on the screen moves the same way, and u have another console with 3 buttons, men/kote/doh... there could also be a mike so u have to do kiai... :)

Are you serious? I really don't think this has any benefit to develop Kendo Skills. This is a child's toy that may have some benefit of exercise but to use it as a means to develop one's Kendo is absurb.......
Instead of stepping around on plastic sheet maybe you should do more suburi?

OHh a lot more fun than skipping. You can do lots and lots of tricks on it ^_^. I remember my first ddr experience back in 2000. I tried it at the arcade and was pretty humiliated. DDR was such a huge craze back then. Well I decided to buy the Japanese version and finally found some dancing pads (it was hard finding ddr pads back then). It was fun though. I burned a lot of calories from it mwahhha.

As I pointed out, it definately improves balance (which is important in Kendo), reflexes (which is important in Kendo) and rhythm (which Miyamoto Musashi himself says is one of the most important factors in combat).
The thing is...I enjoy stepping around on a plastic sheet =). I dont necessarily enjoy doing Suburi.
Haha, it is a childs game though...My 3 year old nephew insists on playing. All he really does is stand on the pad and kinda jump around, but he really throws a fit if he cant. And my 7 month old niece loves crawling around on the pad while people are dancing =).

As someone who plays/owns a DDR game (and EXTENSIVELY practices kendo), i can say it helps. It builds up endurance and stamina. Believe me, playing for a long time (especially on heavy mode) can tire a person out. The jumping can somewhat improve dodging, although not as much as some might like to think. ...and as others say, it DOES help your balance, refexes, and rhythm! Plus its just plain fun.

i agree DDR is dumb a wast of time why train in a bad habit like "DDR" when you can train the right way in the dojo with your friends and your sensai
IF U DO TRAIN IN DDR YOUR TRAINING A BAD HABIT
IF U GET IN TO DDR TO MUCH AND GET HOOKED OR OBSSESED
WITH IT U MIGHT FIND YOUR SELF DANCING IN CLASS INSTEAD OF PRACTICING?
DDR NO!i!

Demon we aren't saying we are going to stop train or train only by playing DDR, DDR is just a way to better your reflexes, Stamina, etc.

DDR is not so bad, Para-Para is the worst game to see others play so far.
While we are on the topic of video games, there's actually this 1st person samurai video arcade that allows you to take up a sword handle (aka light saber) and swing it around, and the sword in the game mirrors the actions of the sword handle. there's also a foot pedal for the character to do fumikomi forward.
