Had a chat in the pub with some work colleagues and we got around to talking about famous people we have met over the years and I thought it might be interesting to see who people on these forums have met from around the world. And, what they thought of that celeb from meeting them.
I have met a few celebs over the years and will start with everyones favourite Eastend barmaid and Carry On 'starlet' Barbara Windsor.
Met her once when she came to my place of work visiting one of her 'friends'.
What a fecking cow she is. You know when someone is a z-list celeb is when they say "don't you know who I am" - she said this several times when she felt she wasn't getting preferential treatment.
I suspect our American friends are gonn be able to name drop so much better than anyone else on this.

Sunshine Village, the Banff ski resort has a celebrity fund-raiser every year. I met Katherine Mary Stewart in the lift line. She was in "Night of the Comet" and also on some soap or other, so definitely C-list but I liked that movie so I recognized her. She was charming and very pretty in person. I had a friend who had a couple of beers with William Shatner in the bar at the same place, said he seemed like a great guy.

I was visiting Hollywood - very strange place, by the way - a few years back with a friend, and while we didn't speak to him, we did see Kid Rock walking the other way. We decided not to be "those fans" by freaking out or anything along those lines. It was more like "Hey, Chuck... isn't that Kid Rock?" "Yeah, I think it is." "Cool... so, you hungry?" "Yup, let's go."

Celeb = actors, singers and the like?
'Cuz if it counts, our current President had dinner at my house once (he wasn't president then, though there was a senator and a couple other high-profiles).
I might be 2-degrees away from a lot of A-lists, but the catch is they are A-lists HERE and probably don't figure in any list whatsoever in the Frigid Northlands.

I used to live in Brighton.
One day - out cycling.... after a steep hill climb I stopped for a rest; sat on a bench looking out to sea........ catching my breath.
Chap came and sat down; we had a very British 'small talk' conversation about the weather and cycling..........lasted all of 2 minutes.
After I had cycled away I realised it was [Lord - but before he was elevated]
Laurence Olivier........

Maybe it was not a proper VIP but i think the story worth telling...
A few years ago, during my honeymoon, i was visiting, together with my wife Niagara Falls.
Wanting a photo i ask to a nearby young man if he could shot one.
This guy say "sure!" assumed a pose and wait me to go next to him.....
I assume the photo pose near my wife, with the falls behind me and watch him perplexed..he understand the situation and a little embarrassed take a shot of us with my camera. Then i thank him and we go away with a smile...
Later a realize that there were other guys dressed like him....a national sport team of some sort with the scottish banner on the jacket, and while i was noticing this many girls were asking them autographs/photo.
Never discovered exactly who they were....

I briefly met Brian May of Queen at the Mumeishi 3s kendo taikai many many years ago!
I think I was ikkyu at the time and I had just been slaughtered by a Japanese 4th or 5th Dan (can't remember which). I came off after my match took my Men off and suddenly realised who I was sitting next to. He said to me "well done you fought well there but he was very good, wasn't he"!
He was there with his son, who I heard was actually doing kendo at the time.

I used to work for Granada so I got to see a fair few of the cast for Coronation Street, occasionally Peter Kay, Kenny Baker (R2-D2) popped in once. Outside the studios/canteen in Manchester I saw Scary Spice and David Dickinson, though they weren't together 'together'. Also - David Beckham in WHSmiths in Manchester Airport when Man United were off for a Eurpoean match and I was going on holiday.
I also won a competition to go go-karting with the lead-singer of my favorite band Pitchshifter (http://www.pitchshifter.com) JS Clayden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Js_clayden) so we've been on friendly terms ever since. Sure he's not A-list [to the rest of the world] by any stretch of the imagination but when you're in a scenario where you meet your idol and there's always that chance they suck, well Jon, his brother Mark and any member of Pitchshifter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitchshifter_(band)) have always been down to earth, funny, considerate and welcoming.
We also bumped into the lead singer of My Ruin/Tura Sutana, the lovely/scary Tairrie B (http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&lr=&um=1&q=tairrie+b&revid=527596100&ei=IT4ySqmrJYOb-AbsycDACQ&sa=X&oi=revisions_inline&resnum=0&ct=broad-revision&cd=1) once. She's American but we noticed on a CD cover she thanked some people at the Red Lion pub in Newburgh which concidentally there is a Newburgh with a Red Lion pub just about 5 miles away from where I live but it couldn't possibly be the same one...
One or two days after spotting this credit we happened to be driving past the Red Lion only to see a massive tour bus parked up in the car park with some scary rock dudes hanging around outside. She was touring in support of the CD so we got her autograph. She's not exactly Liz Taylor but it was a big surprise.
Also - Sebastien Chabal the rugby player in Piccadilly Gardens before Christmas.
Also - Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes.
Also - Johnny Morris - TV zoo keeper and animal voice G.O.D.

When I was in college I used to rig for a company in Phoenix, for the most part just got to say hi to some of the band members but some would actually talk to you, the bands varied from the Rolling Stones to Metallica. I ran (almost literally) into Halle Barry in LAX and talked a little to Anthony Kiedis in St. Thomas. Then as a developer I've met John Malkovich and a couple of other high profile people. All in all everyone seemed very nice, with the exception of Dave Navarro, that guy seemed like a real (insert you favorite description here).

I'm defining "met" loosely here.
Patrick Stewart was my graduation speaker. I shook his hand while lining up outside waiting to go in as he walked by me. I was a Star Trek: Next Gen fan too...so it was sweet!
If being in physical proximity was sufficient, one of my cousins wrote music for Taiwanese Pop Singers..., so he gave me his 3rd row seat ticket to Emil Chou's concert in Taipei back in the 90's...so I was sitting next to a bunch of Asian MTV stars like Ekulele, David Wu, and others. But didn't get to say "Hi" to them because the kid that was suppose to hand me my cousin's backstage pass had the wrong name.
Oh well :D
BTW, do kendo celebrities count? How about a list of the 8th dans that you've keikoed with? :)

I am famous. Jeremy Paxman interviewed me for the politics show (ok I was only on tv for 30 seconds!:silly:) My cousin played drums in Generation X for Billy Idol and was road manager for a few bands like Oasis... at his wedding Big Country were among the guests.
I am also going to be on Rory and thingy's weird sports show for my longbow archery skills next weekend. (obviously I'm a man of many talents...)
Many senior sensei have wanted their pics taken with me at seminars when I was good enough to turn up to help out, join in etc...

Brian was awarded a degree at the same time as I got mine (but I actually got a proper one, not like his where he didn't even do a course...the cheat) and was on stage a bit later on than the 'proper' people..

Well if we are name dropping. I used to work for the Dallas Cowboys, dont hold that against me. So through them I have met Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Jerry Jones, Randy White several times, Drew Pearson, Roger Staubach, Dion Sanders, and the elusive Terrel Owens. All very nice at least to me, though i was not impressed with Aikmans handshake, kind of like a wet fish. I also had dinner once with "The Assassin Jack Tatum" The man scared me by just eating ribs. Nice guy though.
Outside that I work as an editor in Dallas and have come across Actor Barry Corbin. Very nice. Michael Martin Murphy Western Musical artist. Tom Cruise, Ehhh. That kid from the movie "Office Space" with all the flair,is one of my little brothers best freinds. He's kind of a cool guy. I watched the super bowl last year with the scary guy from the "Scream" movies. His name is Brian Avery, you never see his face but he is the guy in the costume 90% of the time.

The few others I have met are.
Stephanie Beecham - served her when I was a manager of a jewellers in the Metro Centre. She was really really lovely.
Harry Secombe - same jewellers- but in York. Nice bloke but wasn't in long
Dionne Warwick - same jewellers in York. She came in wearing lime green crimplene trousers, pink top, covered in a pac-a-mac and headscarf trying to look inconspicuous. Which would have worked but for the two largest black American gentlemen I have ever seen. And if that didn't give you any clues, the fact they were both wearing 'Dionne Warwick tour of Europe" bomber jackets was the giveaway. And she was quite possibly the rudest person I have ever met (after Babs Windsor).

Which is exactly why I don't watch it. I swear I can feel my blood pressure rise everytime they get all bikkuri over some stupid shat like an oversized bowl of katsudon for ¥500.
「ヘエエェッ!!!スッゲッ!」 --> brick flys into the TV (I always keep one handy) and the cat gets kicked.
The only thing that is worth watching is when they have grown men and women run an impossible obstacle course over cold muddy water. I will indulge myself with beer and 1.5 hours of watching people fail over and over again in slow motion. Heh, sometimes they even cry!

Which is exactly why I don't watch it. I swear I can feel my blood pressure rise everytime they get all bikkuri over some stupid shat like an oversized bowl of katsudon for ¥500.
That is precisely why when my wife and I bought our new house in Japan and it didn't come with an attached TV antenna, we didn't bother getting one. Haven't seen Japanese TV (unless being at the inlaws) in about 4 months. Sweet. My sould is that little bit cleaner.
As for meeting famous people, I met Griff Rhys Jones at a fundraiser for a cancer charity many years ago and got my photo taken with him.
Met Dave Prowse (Darth Vader) at a sci-fi convention in London about 15 years ago.
John Wark, Ipswich Town FC and Scotland legend turned up at my house with my uncle one day. That guy is my hero. I had heard someone say many years ago, never meet your heroes, you will only be disappointed. I was. Not because he was a dick or anything but because I couldn't think of anything decent to say.
Ken Russell at a pub in Southampton. When I was at film school in Southampton, Ken Russell, because he was a local lad, was employed as a guest lecturer to give advice to final year students on their final projects. My groups consultation was in a pub near the college where he regaled us with stories of buttering his own head and putting it between two slices of bread at some film party in the 70s.

He sat down all happy and ready to field some easy well thought out questions about the industry from us school kids. Our opening question was something along the lines of, 'why are you no longer funny?'...
Incidentally the sit com he came to talk about never got as far as the screen.

can we talk about 'proper' famous people now, instead of these so called 'celebs', most of whom have no talent with a sword, and therefore hold no interest for me. Yabe sensei from Himeji, who was in Last Samurai, therefore qualifies as a true celeb, as obviously the film revolved around him, not that tosser from the USA...
SO....how many 8dan+ have you personally trained with (ie not been part of a huge seminar, but got personal tips from on a face to face basis....) Personal pics will count if it is obvious its not a 'put up with a grinning idiot junior' type of pic... 7dans are two a penny so we can rule them out as just 'almost famous'...like a Big Brother inmate or something..

Allen Iverson (NBA Player) I met him in an airport before boarding a plane he sat next to me. We gave each other the nod and I went back to playing my Nintendo DS.

Theres a few.....
Met actor Powers Boothe at a farmers market in Flesherton ontario a few years ago, he and his wife and kids apparently had a cottage in the area and loved doing the local art crawl.
Was at a local organic cafe back in (don't quote me) 1997 and bumped into Larry Gowan, chatted and had some humus......was a really nice guy, really humble guy, the humus however was awful....
Was at the Arnold Classic in 2000 in Columbus Ohio and went to a local club (go figure, Canadians going drinking....) and literally ran into wrestler Scott Steiner, I was pretty drunk already, but he laughed it off, came over sat with us and had a few rounds before leaving. Was actually a pretty nice guy.
Same weekend I also managed to piss off Lou Ferigno by taking his picture.......apparently he wasn't so into that....what added fuel to the fire was one of the other guys we went there with chimed in "Whats wrong Lou, are ya gonna get mad and smash your boat?"...what was funny was we went two years later and I ran into Lou autographing posters, he saw me, looked angry, tore the poster he was signing in half and glared. Guess he remembered me........Lou's a dick.
Theres more, but hey whatever. :)

You are right, they have no concept of the thing. The thing being, whatever you English take it to be.
You go there, and you have no grasp of their thing. See where I'm going here? We take simple behaviours and attitudes for granted because we have been taught to do them since infanthood. They have been taught different things, 's all. Out of everything in the world few are as non-absolute as ettiquete and manners, not even taste.
People in our midst should be more sensible to this fact because, when we have cultural exchanges with the Japanese, it's often quite rough-edged.

In regard to Mr Peter West's comment that I have clients!!???!, I would therfore like to clarify some points.
No I am not in the world's oldest profession.
I am in the world's second oldest profession......as a nanny!!. However my first job was for the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Wellington, New Zealand.
In this job I met the following people....
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh...twice.
King Juan Carlos of Spain once.
I have had my jersey pulled by the Prime Minister of New Zealand. (David Lange RIP) He was very surprised that I can with it as he thought someone had stuck somthing on my back. I have been uncermonisly thrown through the double swing doors that lead to the Debating Chamber on Budget night, by the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Maori Affairs, just to piss off the waiting Media!. Ahh so many flash bulbs wasted.
My boss became the Prime Minister of New Zealand (Helen Clark EEEk!!)
And so to this country
I have
Shown a very intreagued Colin Firth around our pub when they were shooting "The Importance of Being Earnest" He was doing his best Mr Darcy impersonation.
Chased Rupert Everet because he stole a packet of crips
Waved happily at Ewan MaGreggor and his wife at a Yo Sushi. (I left them alone as they were enjoying themselves and I decided not to disturb them.
Ask the recipreiant of a phone call if he wanted to take the call as there was a nasty Australian on the line - Pat Cash.
Sat with a very impressed Billy Zane who sneaked into a Nenriki championship one year to do some research for one of his films he was working on. Does anybody else remember this??. We were all explaining the dos and don't of Kendo etc etc.
Let in Jimmy Page in and made him a cup of tea!
Had Adrian Smith yell "What the f**K do you two think you are doing!!" at Bruce Dickinson and I as we were demonstraiting Italian 16th century sword fighting techniques in Adrian's Kitchen.
Stared very quizically at Marylin Manson, who went Rawh! at me!.
Taught Adrian Naginata and Natilee his wife, Kendo
But the best one of all was when I accidentlally held up Iron Maiden whilst teaching Bruce the various shinai positions for Kendo eg Wake game, Jodan
etc at reading where there were 80,000 fans waiting!
I must say that that nanny job was the best I have ever had.

Had a chat in the pub with some work colleagues and we got around to talking about famous people we have met over the years and I thought it might be interesting to see who people on these forums have met from around the world. And, what they thought of that celeb from meeting them...
Sorry, I know this thread is old but I just read it. It was interesting to hear about all the famous (infamous) people that everyone has met and where they have met them. I feel a little shy saying that I am not very familiar with most of the people that were named and I think most of the names I would drop would not be much different to most of the readers.
However, there was one man that I had the rare pleasure to work with for a short project during my work at a previous company; Stan Lee. He was down to earth and just a pleasure to know. I even asked for his autograph afterwards.
Not sure how I feel about Disney acquiring the Marvel Heros, but I guess it would be ok as long as they do not get too Goofy with them.
