Great. Aren't they illegal in Massachusetts?

Yeah they are. The only exception of possession of them is if you have them in a Martial Arts school or competing in Martial Arts tournament.

But there are countless number of people who have and practice Nunchakus at home or in their backyards in Massachusetts still. They're illegal cause some stupid kids used them against cops several years ago. Also the wood rope ones were easy to get through metal detectors in schools so kids would beat other kids up in the hallways or after school. A few bad apples ruin it for the rest.
