You get asked questions like, "What is zanshin?" Also you may be asked to describe certain waza or the point of kirikaeshi.

National Federations requiring written examinations provide sample questions for the different grading levels. Check the website first; ask your instructor or your Sempai. If all else fails, write to your national fed.

the last seminar i was at, i heard that people going for a dan grade got asked "what part does kendo play in your daily life?" but apparently this is unusual, and they are more often on different aspects of kendo

just looked up some old files on my computer. for my shodan test written portion, i was asked to describe and explain kirikaeshi and chudan-no-kamae.

you start taking written tests starting with your shodan exam -- at least if your dojo belongs to a federation that's affiliated with or observes the guidelines set by the international kendo federation (IKF).

The CKF, for some odd reason, does not have written exams for Yudansha grades in Kendo, Iaido and Jodo. However, they are an anomoly in this regard.

I think that the CKF may have been founded prior to standard written Yudansha exams, and may be exempt.

Someone told me that, for the lower dan grades at least, they don't grade people on the written exam anyway, but use it more as a guide to the level of knowledge in the federation.
