"At common law, an unlawful assembly is a gathering of at least three persons whose conduct causes observers to reasonably fear that a breach of the peace will result." Thanks google. I watched the video, and I saw at least 15 scared people. "Master" Abbott, Tom "Ursalator" Urso...you guys are goin' to jail!
Arnold Sports Festival Sword Highlights
Sword Celebrities Gather for a Day of Fun, Friends, and Blatant Violations of Laws (and human decency)
As an in-depth, talented, and good-looking reporter, I'm required to go into situations that are dangerous. I often must blend in with the worst scum on the earth to get you guys the scoop. It's just the type of guy I am. However, this story was especially dangerous. No thanks is in order, I'm too humble for all that. When I was told I'd be tailing Dana Abbott, AND Tom Urso, I knew I was in for it, but I had NO idea.
The date- March 10th, 2009. The place- A building constructed from evil, and lies...or a convention center. The time-Zero hour. I entered the convention center, showed the security all the patches on my gi, and I was in! I knew I had to stay on my toes. The moment I let my gaurd down, they'd smell the legitimacy and my cover'd be blown. "Combative Sword Sparring will begin in five minutes!", was blasted through a crude PA system, that was totally unneccesary for the magnitude of the situation. I mean, when someone uses a PA system, it should be for evacuation alerts or sports arenas, or to help find the parents of lil' Billy who got lost in the mall and was found stuggling to free his shoe-laces from the edge of the escalator. Not for this. Imagine two grown men. Now picture they both are holding pool-noodles. Now picture them wearing lacross masks. Now picture indicriminate slaps that would make a hemophiliac giggle. Did I spell hemophiliac correctly?Who knows? I DO know that those hockey gloves they had on were needed to protect those knuckles from foam. Good call. Play it safe.
Next up...Tamashigiri Competition! Now, this is gonna be great.
Contestant 1- Check out that watch! I never knew they could make watch faces that looked embarrassed.
Contestant 2- That samurai is lounging in style. His black, cotton t-shirt sets off the gray sweatpants. Take that, Fashion Industry!
Contestant 3- Was less interesting than the PA system.
Contestant 4- Look out, we got us a red belt. Chop, chop, chop. Red belt style!!! I have got to learn to tie an obi like that.
Contestant 5- Capris or hakama...you decide.
Contestant 6- TWO red belts...NO WAY!
Boooorrrrinnnggg. It was time for some action. What's this? Kendo vs Gumdo! Guess which one is doing which. Tricked ya! The answer is "neither". Tap,tappy, tap. The end.
Demonstations. Check out what Dana demonstrates on his feet. Oh yeh...he cuts some stuff in questionable ways. Tom Urso does things...I dunno, I was getting hungry, and I needed to use the bathroom so I wasn't really paying attention.
What could possibly keep me awake right now? Baseball swings to the tsuki-dare, ridiculous zanshin, shoto v. shoto, nito v. nito? You decide.

Wow 80, did you get out of bed with the wrong foot this morning?
I'm not impressed by the vid (to say the least), that's all I got to say.

I used to be a regular at the Arnold, mostly for the trade show side of it. I checked out the "Battle of Colombus" once and just walked away shaking my head. I can actually say Samurai80's tale pretty much an accurate description.
Ya, I love the red belt, he's from the "I made this shit up Ryu" :) But I didn't see one thing in that vid that was even remtoely solid. crap, allllllll crap. Not an opinion, just a fact on that one.
Maybe they were all having an off day. You know the insane pressure of putting on an event like that..........one that they'd actually distanced from the trade show this year by a few blocks when it all used to be in the same building. Says something right there.
Meh, but what do I know. I don't own a foam bat.

I generally try to not get involved with these discussions too much, but I feel that I must comment that as someone who does a moderate amount of video editing, it is was very obvious to me upon one viewing that a number of the clips used in this were actually sped up a small amount. Watching the motion of the hakama or people in the background shows this very clearly.

Some of the sparrers displayed zanshin by turning their backs and walking away. With their back turned. 'nuff said.

tomurso (http://www.youtube.com/user/tomurso) has replied to your comment on 2009 Arnold Sports Festival sword highlights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-tERcxL2KY&feature=email): I am not sure what you mean by "...the fast forward deal" but none of the clip's speed was manipulated. The info went from the camera to iMovie, with no editing other than cutting the various clips & adding headers/music.
Since any solid hit is considered a point (mein, kote, dou, ashi & tsuki), Chanbara sparring is typically performed with speed as a priority.
Thank you for watching.

All I have to say is watch the clothing and the people in the back ground. Most old classic budo films that have been converted to video have a similar problem in that the frame rates used in the old films where lower than the common ones now, yet many convertion companies still do a frame per frame convertion (it is easy the adjusting for the differing frame rates). The results are that everyone appears borderline superhuman fast. Again watching the fall of things like clothing, hair, the speed at which people sit down, and what not is a clear indicator of the frames being played back at a faster rate than they should be (for many of the old classics, like the old black and white footage in the Morihei Ueshiba Aiki-Budo video, the video should actually be about 20% slower than it is.) With the classic videos it is fairly easy to spot, but even after repeated watchings I still stand by that fact that at least some of the footage is being played back slightly faster than it was shot and the footage I notice it on the most actually isn't the sparring footage. Intentional or not I will leave for others to argue.

Hey Tom, I see you there...checking out the thread, huh?
Quote from Tom Urso...
tomurso (10 months ago) I study & teach both Korean & Japanese martial arts...
Korean
1. Tae Kwon Do
2. Kum Do
Japanese
1. Goshindo
a. Combatives
b. Batto Do
c. Tameshigiri
Thank you
No, thank YOU. You're at a teacher's level for kumdo? Batto do, really? What exactly is "combatives"? How do you teach "combatives" without ever being in combat? Are you reffering to koryu? How would you earn the right to teach "combatives"? Will gas prices go down this month?

The audience is very close when the tameshi giri is performed. I love the flag on the Kendo/Kumdo/Gumdo guy. Too bad it wasn't red to warn everyone to stay clear of this travesty........
I posted this on youtube I wonder if it will stick otherwise this is what I said. Was mr. Hairy Ass also present to complete the travesty?

Looks like the Great I AM, and well...me, are giant pussies. Let's read...
A message from Ricky Arias (sponsored by Century Martial Arts- The company that brought you light-up kama, and FOAM!)
What is your problem? I hate bullshit. Especially bullshit that costs people money.
I cant understand why you continue to ask the same question when it has already been answered. Which question? You ask about rank, but you are listed as a shodan I believe? Uh-oh, somebody can read. And no other arts are listed that you study. You dont like Abbott Sensei's or Toms cutting lets see yours... Wait I am willing to bet you have never even done tameshigiri... Kendo may have Kata that were created in 1912, but Kata with a Bokken is not enough to understand a real sword.I've been around enough iaido guys, and gals to know correct cutting when I see it. I don't play golf, either, but if I saw a guy using a pitching wedge from 300 yards out, I'd know something was wrong.
Abbott Sesnei is a 3rd Dan in Kendo, a 5th Dan in Toyama Ryu. Goshindo was founded by Tanabe Tetsundo who is a 6th dan in kendo, a 9th dan in Toyama ryu as well as a 6th dan in Tankendo and 7th dan in Jukendo.... Because he created chambara to be free of the limits that kendo puts to combat and the people from other ryu in general does not give you who is a low ranking student the right to smash an Art you have no experience in! When did chanbara become an art?
Foam bat or Shinai you still wont show up at tom's dojo to show your high skill... Why doesn't he show up at one of mine?Funny when it comes to more than just talking and actually showing you skill against the skill you mock you seem allot less willing to act. Typing is free, driving to Columbia to practice something I think is ridiculous sounds kinda stupid. I've seen Tom's "Kumdo", too. Not really worth the experience.Just like all the other high ranking kendoka on this forum that are in Japan that could prove their claims easy, but dont. You could prove Tom's skill against yours and even video tape it... but you wont... Actually, I'd love to.Same way Great I Am would not go against Tanabe... Talk all you want but a 6th Dan kendo rank was given to Tanabe for a reason.... I dont think great I am really wanted to find out! Even though it would not have taken him more than 1 hour of time to do so.... Odd.....
I hold no ill will to you sir. Hey! Don't lie to me. If you don't like me, great. Just don't do the whole "I'm too budo to be mad at people" thing.I just ask that you either prove you point by actually doing somthing more than letting nothing but trash come out of your mouth...I'm typing. It would be as simple as sparring with Mr Urso in a friendly match. As a learning experience not somthing done from hate, but respect and desire to learn from a new opponent. That is the idea behind Chanbara freestyle safe combat.... Until then I see nothing but talk and no action!
Kind regards....Seriously...stop that.
PS
You dont have to wear gloves in chanbara or a helmet, but your hands will be red and you will have a black eye or bloody nose by the end of the night once things get heated.... You want me to pull up the Dana Abbott commercial for these foam weapons again, where he claims you don't get ever get hurt?Again never doing Chnbara in the US you would not know...Also most of the people cutting had about 30mins of training. Most of them were from other demo or just people there. Cutting with a sword is easy because that is what a sword is made to do. But I bet you with all your training would not cut better than the sweatpants guy in that video How much are going to bet?

Apparently he's a man on a mission. And I can understand why. They are misleading people. The thread about reclaiming the blade was a fine example how people can be brainwashed. I think it is sad that they run around in their small circle consisting of a phony world.
It would be better if they joined a regular dojo and have the whole world at their feet. They can tameshi giri themselves until there is no beach mat left in the US. No big deal. But I actually hate their guts when they proclaim that they're holier than thou when all they do is made up stuff, but refuse to believe that it is. Underwear or no underwear.

Even though it would not have taken him more than 1 hour of time to do so.... Odd.....Ricky, if you read this, not odd at all. I am an extremely busy man, and that includes practising the majority of the week 4-5 times for the World Championships, looking after my 4 month old son, and generally working my balls off so that I can do both of those. Why then would I want to waste my time with a schyster like Tanabe who created a sport that he said (and you) is derived from JSA but contains NOTHING of the fundemntal principals. And, I repeat, he quotes himself on the international chanbara ass website as being being annoyed by principles such as kiai and hasuji. And why should I give a crap what grade he is? I get to practise with 8th dan's at almost every keiko I go to. Oh, and I've practised with plenty of 6th dans who've got rubbish kendo, and plenty of 3rd dans with great kendo. Grade is only of limited importance, my friend.
That's why I don't go, because frankly, it's not worth the waste of time, effort and money that it would so blatantly be. And, you couldn't even tell me which kendo dojo he trains at.

Anyone and everyone that associates freely with Abbot, Urso, or any of their henchmen richly deserve any punishment or embarrassment they get. And that's just the end of that.
Somebody needs to start a Goodwill Fund for a visit for Great I Am and a few other folks (a whole federation might do) to actually go out and have a visit.

Or just have the people that still care about him so much just finance the trip themselves with the rationalization that it would make them feel better.

Ok, I think it's time the League sent a delegation to the Arnold next year to show them what Kendo actually is. Besides I haven't been to the trade show for a few years so it's like a vacation, plus the bonus of some ass whooping thrown in for good measure.......yes, this is a good idea. I am so sick of these pool noodle waving dolts.
I think I'll download the paperwork today. Anyone else feel like tagging along?

hmmm... I found this thread (and forum) by searching for something on google, and now I can't remember what the hell it was. Anyway, thinking the video was about an unlawful assembly, I watched it. The blades are SHARP, and the music is pumping, so it was ok by me, but the video had nothing to do with an unlawful assembly. Then I read the comments and though, man, these guys don't mince words. ouch. say what you feel. And I though, this is my kind of place...
