thats kool. What group are you going to be in? If you guys bust out your normal nckf team, then you guys will have a good chance of getting 1st in team. SCKF always puts one or two zako kenshi on the team...i dont know why but they do.

Andoy
11-01-2004, 08:33 PM
I'll be there. In the non-degree division. Yeah court D's pretty shabby...the ceiling feels alot lower than what it seems and you might as well be doing kendo on concrete cos that floor doesn't bounce at all! luckily i've never fought there before.

I haven't heard or visited this forum for awhile. How has everyone been? I'm busy busy with school, so I haven't been practicing that much, but we are having a very big taikai next weekend in Vancouver! Will anyone be there? I'll probably be running around helping out organizing the whole thing, but if you know who I am then feel free to say hi!

As for Court D, I'm always fighting there. That's the "pit" where they put all the women. At least it's bright in there, and very quiet....makes you feel like you're being watched though. (not a good feeling) The only other court I've been in is Court C, where I was pushed out ...and I hit my head on the stage. Ouch! my fault my fault...But that was way back when women were in the mens and women's division! Man, I wish I could be in both again!

Anyways, misterkurukuru, tenken, moocow or whoever else want to come...e-mail me your schedule...if you guys want, I'll take you somewhere the next day...that's only if you want to hang out with me. : ( But, you gotta tell me quick, so I can get a day off of work!

Will
13-01-2004, 03:06 PM

yay, it's finally time for my favorite shiai, the steveston taikai. finally a tournament where you have to actually work to place. man, last year i was in the stupid court D. "D" for Dungeon. let's hope i'm not stuck in the dungeon this year. it is tenken's turn now. hahahah. see y'all in the 1-3 dan division.

Wish I could go. Had to make a choice between Vegas for Superbowl or the taikai. I'll be there next year. Good luck to all the guys from SoCal, and one or two guys from up North. :cross_eye

ms.kendo
14-01-2004, 02:55 AM
Yeah, I would probably choose the Superbowl too. Do you wanna trade places? You can be in the women's division!
Have fun! Don't drink too much booze!~

Will...Looking forward to seeing you at the North/South. The wife will be in Japan with my boy, so I'll have some room at the house for people to crash if anyone needs to.

Ms. Kendo...I'll try to behave in Vegas. Is it possible to drink to much??

Shut up traitor
At least before, you had loyalties in So. Cal and I respected you, now you're just whoring out friendship... that's even worse than a traitor.

(but i'm probably staying w/ friends @ UCLA, but thanks anyways)

Hongsermeier
14-01-2004, 08:17 AM
Not whoring out friendship. I just know there are some broke ass people up north that could use a hand. I'll be rooting for the SoCal guys to kick your ass. :cross_eye

Just wondering if anyone from the East (of Canada) is attending the tournament. I know there is a tournament in Detroit the same day. Most people from Ontario go there, but just wondering if this year some people have decided on coming to Steveston??!

By the way, there's a big tournament in Vancouver this weekend. There is an awesome teacher, Yamada-sensei (hanshi 8dan) who is here right now coaching some of us prior to the tournament. There will be a seminar held on Sunday as well. If anyone is close to Vancouver, I encourage everyone to drop by! This teacher is a former all Japan Champion, and he has come in second twice, and 3rd three times! He's also a shimpan at the World's as well as the All Japan Championships!

Andoy
19-01-2004, 07:17 PM
The Vancouver tournament was crazy! Even though i was handeth the smacketh down in the 2nd round, it was still pretty fun to watch. The food was good too. A very special thanx to Yamada Sensei. Whoever had the opportunity to be given advice and tips by him the day the night before or during the tournament is pretty lucky. Because his intructions really improve your kendo in such a small time! Anyways, congrats to everyone who went yesterday and hope to see u guys in steveston. Hopefully by some freak chance none of us will have to fight in court "D"ungeon!

ms.kendo
20-01-2004, 05:24 AM
I agree. The Vancouver Tournament was a success!!! Yeah Vancouver Team! The final team match was by far the best kendo I've seen from people from our club. IT must have really been the work of Yamada-sensei! I've never seen so many clean men's!!!! Don't you agree, Andoy?
Well, I met alot of people at the tournament as well. People from Seattle as well! IT's always nice making kendo friends!!! I'm really excited for Steveston! I'll get to meet these people again and also it's probably the last tournament at least for a couple of months! IT has been a pretty chaotic! :tired: See you all on Valentine's Day!

Andoy
20-01-2004, 09:23 AM
Yeah that was by far one of the best tournament's i've ever gone to, it's crazy although the match of the day was probably between Vancouver team A and the all star team lead by Francisco Gomez....that guy was crazy good! He sure gave Nori a hard time! But yeah Yamada sensei's instructions were really helpful. Like what ms. kendo said there were so many AJKC type mens, and for the first time in a while, i didn't see any sumo wrestling.
Yeah i'm really looking forward to steveston too, the 1-3dan division is pretty stacked! Luckily i'm not in it!

you know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have been working on the bunny men, kurukuru men, and my new move the "super duper awesome super slow action jackson men" its a pretty good waza, but you need to do a lot of seme and it does not work on adult kyus cause they just swing at you. it seems to only work on 4 dan and above...i dunno i guess its cos the younger dudes only know how to swing a lot too! gahahaha!!!!!
well back to my senior thesis!!!!

dorkusxmaximus
21-01-2004, 07:06 PM
mwahaha it was a privilege to experience bunny men LOL. Did you do your kurukuru men on me too? I can't wait to see your latest move haha o_O. Of course, that's the only thing adult kyus know how to do hahah =P. We swing away until that point is scored hahah.

ms.kendo
22-01-2004, 05:55 AM
Wow...looks like someone has been really working hard on those men waza! I hope I don't have to ever fight you! You'll have to show me someday your kurukuru men's and other men-uchi! I myself, have no waza : ( ....I will have to just stick with my usual routine. (just find a place that's open and hit!) Anyways....I better keep practicing...I don't wanna suck for the tournament! Oh, and BTW, it was nice meeting you dorkus! I had no idea that this was you, until now!!!! I'm sorry, I'm a little slow with things.
Oh, and if the man who gave me a killer ass bruise at the Vancouver Tournament is on this forum...THANKS ALOT!!! (I will never be able to wear a skirt again!) my right thigh is so swollen it is as fat as both of my thighs combined!!!! I even had trouble putting on my baggy jeans this morning! : ( Ah, but I guess getting injured is just a part of doing kendo! See ya'll soon!

dorkusxmaximus
22-01-2004, 02:32 PM

Yes Dorkus.....I hope you don't have a grudge against this person. However, I must say you were trying very hard during the team matches! Quite Impressed!!!! But remember what we talked about.... CANADA & US relations...hehe...that was what that whole night after Vancouver was about! Mr.Moocow...hope you won't be beating down anyone that Dorkus fights....these tend to be women, ones that you are most likely friends with ^^ wink* wink* Moocow, you are too powerful for us women! I'm even intimidated doing kirikaeshi with you. :confused2
As far as Mr. Inouye...I would very much like to meet you. Judging from what you write on this forum, you seem like a very interesting person. If you know who I am...try to track me down at the tournament, or I'll get dorkus or someone to introduce you to me...I'm always up for meeting kendo-crazy people!
Moocow...wish I could help you out, but as far as I know, all the 1-3dan people I know, you can probably beat. Let's see....here are some names...

K.Kobayashi (Youshinkan) pretty fast, likes to do Jodan sometimes, but mostly chudan no kamae
T.Saito (Renbu) This guy is a Japan recruit. He's here learning English for awhile. Really nice guy, and his kendo is very clean. Did pretty well at the Vancouver Tournament!
G.Suzaka (UW) Also a very nice guy...pretty strong as well, however he's not used to fighting nitou, and I think you've practiced with him before
N.Akitaya (Van) Also quite strong....won't tell you any of his waza though! sowee!!!

otherwise...all the others you've probably seen at the PNKF taikai. Koike sensei came over to my house last week, and we were trying to come up with a similar list...this is really all we got. hehe.......Your name and Tenken's names came up in the conversation though! Good things were mentioned ^^ GO TEAM USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, I won't hold a grudge against her, Ms. Kendo ^_^. I like going against her. She's fun to go against, and she always makes me try to practice harder. Haha I was the happiest loser LOL. I should be thanking her instead because usually after losing, I would be in a kendo slump for a while =).Yes, Canadian and USA relations are very important (^.^). We must preach loveeee and harmony :) .

YOU Wouldn't dare, Jamie! at least not during the match T_T. Why not before the taikai when we all line up LOL? you can present it to me there like you said before haha.

Andoy
31-01-2004, 04:40 AM
Hey Ms. Kendo. I saw your list of guys to watch out for in the 1-3 dan division but you missed one HUGE person. FRANCISCO GOMEZ. He is the most underrated kendoka in BC, if not..western Canada. Just when u think you've got him in a hole....he gets u back! He's really deceptive....because his style is kinda unorthodox. So yeah Mr. Moocow, i'd also keep an eye on this guy. BTW, who here's gonna be in the Adult kyu division???

You know, I'll have to look up on it, but I think he's going back to Japan. At the Vancouver Tournament, he said he was going back to japan soon, so he left the trophy in Vancouver. He's still quite young, he's very strong and quick, but I'm not sure if he's 3dan. He could be 4dan. (At Vancouver, the categories are done by age. He was in the 21-30yrs category.) He practices at Highline or Bellvue, not sure which one. It would be really exciting to watch you guys fight though!

WHAT!!!??? A 3-dan only group? The whole reason why I go to this tournament is cause I have to go against like 6 or 7 guys before I make it to the semi-finals. It's one of those few tournaments where I have to work hard to place. Well, maybe there are gonna be alot of 3-dan. Hmm..... I guess the shodan and nidan guys were complaining that they would have no chance of winning if the 3-dans were in the same division. Try practicing once in a while and maybe you might win. Hahahahahah... Oh well, I guess it'll make things a bit more interesting this year.

Wow....Andoy, that was a fast post! Maybe you should be incharge of internal contacts of the club instead of ME! hehe.....Yeah, that's kinda cool....it'll be a really exciting category to watch! Go 3-dans! hehe...maybe I'll wear my hachimaki, my white keikogi, my polyester hakama, and pose as a guy so I can fight in this division! I would totally lose, in a second, but it would be so great to get my butt kicked in this division! Anyways, can't wait until this weekend. I unfortunately won't be going to the practice on Friday, I'll have to practice at my home dojo that night..wish I could make it though! Everyone better behave Friday night...no drinking....remember....3dan and "ladies" (I hate that word) begin early in the afternoon!!!!

Mr.Inouye,

Vancouver is a pretty dull city....not like California...We don't have Disneyland : (

There's a nice aquarium, but you've got sea world : (

Well, I'm thinking of taking the guys to the Capilano Suspension Bridge, providing I have enough time. It's about an hour away from Steveston and there's alot of nice british columbian forestry and of a course a small brittle wooden bridge that is a couple hundered metres off the ground. I really want to see these guys freaked out!

There's Stanley park...a really nice park that u can bike or rollerblade around. It would be nice if there's good weather though.

All the ski resorts are open....even if you don't want to ski, you always take the lift up and check out the ice sculptures at the top of the mountain!

If you're looking for something closer to steveston...there's the fish market that's just down the street from where the tournament is held.

If anything, there's always the hedgehogs. (moocow will tell you)

Hope that helps! oh..and it's chilly here, don't wear shorts and sandals!

Moocow: Don't buy the purdy's hedgehogs this time, there are better hedgehogs out there!!!!! Oh, and the cell phone number you have is my old one...I'll send you the new one in a private message!

Hey guys, that was a really good tourney! It was pretty cool to finally meet Moocow, Tenken, Mr.Kurukuru, and Tenken's brother. Plus I was really fortunate to practice with them(although only for a short while) when they came over the night before the tourney. Plus I finally saw Mr. Kurukuru's "bunny men", and Moocow's "Sayonara Do" (craziness). Plus i also found out who Dorkusmaxiumus was. She's pretty crazy too! Even though i got my arse whipped in the first round it was still fun cos the steveston tourney had good kendo.

the last two dojos that took 3rd place for teams are supposed to fall under the senior team results, but the administrator didn't give me enough time to edit it *snaps*. Same with the divisions, so it'll look pretty confusing until someone else posts up a better one.

William!! you could have seen why I have never done the sportsmen's pledge !!! It was soooo funny I have the "what the FAQ are you smoken?" look to the judges, and then i did my, " ehh what are you going to do?' shoulder shrug right after. There was one guy doing shinpan for the 1-2 dan group...he was bad...i was watching him judge and he raised his flag for almost everything! i was going to take his flags away and start judging!!! not enough SCKF judges in my mind... but thats home court adv. for you! just have to overcome it i guess. For all US So cals, we got to see a lot of nice clean kendo done by the Canadians... hope we can grow out of our side-ways kendo someday!

Who are you calling "BigFoot"? I have been called a lot of things but never that. My match with Inouye was a bit physical (understatement). I had no idea how to play against Nitto (specially holding the kodachi in his left hand). BTW the men removal thing was just me trying to go straight in. I was also a little riled by my previous match. This guy stuck to me like glue and that started to Piss me off (I suppose that was the point). Ultimately when I try to push somebody crowding me,who weighs 150lbs, away from me he usually leaves his feet. Mr. Inouye, who played well, was none the worse for wear. In the final of the court (my fourth match) this guy ran into me and fell. I did not even help in any way. It kinda broke my concentration and then he hit me kote (the little people seem to be able to sneak in the kote). He was a good player but I could have played better. In my own defense, despite the physical stuff some decent kendo came through.

I really liked the Steveston tournament and I enjoyed watching the SCKF kendoka. It is too bad that our guys did not have a good day. I have seen them play much better. I am glad that at least I was able to entertain someone's dojo with the Wednesday night videos.

You are welcome to visit Montreal. There are a lot of fun/interesting things going on in the summer including a comedy fest and an international jazz festival. Bring your bogu too. Stan,

Try to make it to Venice. We we would love to have you over. After regular practice some of us do atogeiko. Then after that, we have refreshments, talk story, and like last Wednesday watch videos of recent events. Let us know and we will bring the video. We all can have a good time.

Your kendo was fine. Actually, it must be hard fighting smaller people. You can't really go "all out" because they would all fly out of the court. Holding back is harder.

dorkus,

Yep saw Jamie's face full on. Cracked us all up.

Ahhhh I'm going through stages of denial right now. Doing kendo in Canada is sooo much better than over here in Southern California. I would just like to say that Vancouver Kendo Club is far by the best place I have ever done kendo. The floor is great, the practice is great, the sensei are great, and the people are great.

I would have to concur! There is not place like Vancouver dojo here in so cal. Oh how I wish there were…and the level of kendo is so different. Not that mr.kurukuru got his @$$ handed to him (stupid judge…a freaking 7 dan should know that the elbow is not a valid point). Their kendo is good, but the judging sucked, well maybe they didn’t suck, its just that they are not used to our brand of kendo.

Actually after the practice at Vancouver dojo, I came out with a tsuki mark on my neck, a bruised knee cap, and a smile on my face. man my kihon sucks!

There are lots of girls and everyone there is nice ^_^. Jamie, you're so going to get whooped hahah =P. My experience at the Vancouver dojo was pretty good as well. They applied kata to a kendo perspective which was pretty new to me (instead of using a bokken, they used a shinai instead). It was a kewl practice. Ohh haha the Asaoka brothers almost turned me into roadkill LOL. I was sitting by Koike-sensei when all of a sudden STaMPEDE O_O!!! They were competing with each other to see who got to practice with him first. Forgot who won and got to practice with Koike-sensei though =P.

Oh how I wish there were…and the level of kendo is so different.
I've been interested to hear these comments, given that you guys walked away with a lot of hardware at Steveston. Clearly your shiai kendo is working for you, so you feel like the kendo is better there from a more pure point of view? Sounds like it wasn't just a VKC practice you were at either, more of a general keiko held at their dojo?

ms.kendo

WHOA~..so I haven't visited the forum for awhile, and I come back to find so many compliments!!!!!!!! Thank you all for your compliments about VKC! But I don't want others to get the wrong idea! We ARE NOT the best dojo to practice at the world...although I do love my club and it is a fun place to be. It is especially fun when moocow, misterkurukuru, tenken, dorkus and others come to visit.
Dorkus, the practice you vistied wasn't a godo-geiko, but it just happened to be a day when alot of people from other clubs decided to visit. You were very lucky that the asaoka brothers, and koike-sensei were there when you came. (we all were!) That chasing after koike-sensei startled me a bit too! Our dojo has an "everyone is welcome" environment, so often many people from local dojos, (sunrise, steveston, youshinkan...UBC) come to visit.
Our club is largely focuses on kihon as well. You guys are right. The style is totally different, but to me, kendo is kendo....there are many amazing sensei out there who do many different styles but are all so equally inspirational! It was a pleasure for you guys to come though. It's good to be exposed to different styles of kendo.
Ever since Yamada-sensei from Japan came to visit us 30 years ago (way before I was born) our club's focus has been kihon. he has visited us about 5 times during the course of 30 years, so alot of us who have been part of the club for a long time have been exposed to his excellent teaching! This may sound so strange to all of you...but I love kihon! I can never get sick of it! Although, I'm not so good at shiai....it feels really good when I know that I'm doing clean kendo! hehe I'm such a geek! One thing our club misses is that we are not very competitive, that's probably we have so many girls! hehe (cool and calm ones! hehe)
Well, as far as any tournament goes....there will always be times when we don't agree with what shimpan do. But, a good point is a good point, and there isn't much we can do. IF we all could make super duper kimeteru, obvious clean points, then really we would never all be complaining. Although there are always discrepencies. But, I don't do shimpan, and I'm scared to do as well, cause it looks like such a hard job. I will never complain!

haha it was kewl, never seen two people that wanted to practice with a sensei so badly before. It was very interesting to see that ^_^*. Ahh who's the dorkus now =P? J/k haha (^.^). After Yamada-sensei's visit, I started to develop a liking for kihon. It's like he made the basics seem new again =). I can relate ^^. Did you love it even more after he visited?

Hey Inouye, sorry I couldn't make it to practice. The Mouse needed me to stay at work until 10:30. I really want to see the video. Especially your match with your evil twin. Hahahah.. that was a great match. I will really try to make it this Weds. Just thought of a new counter against people who go for the kote that's holding the daito. I have named it "The Matrix-Reloaded Men." You'll see why it's called that when I show it to you. Just not sure if it's gonna be effective. Hahahah. Damn Nancy, I wish I lived in Seattle so I can go practice at the Canadian dojos. Lucky you.

Hey Dorkus....I have a quick question. Do you have any idea when the UW taikai is? Have they announced an official date? I probably won't go...I've got a big concert then, but just wondering so I can post it on the VKC website!!!!! Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately, I'm not talking about the Strokes concert. I have to prepare for my own concert! (Not as exciting, eh?!) Andoy, you should really try to make it to UW. It's one my favourites, cause it's not very big...it ends really early, and we don't have to take a huge bus load of kids! Hehe....we always carpool down there, so on the way back, we usually have a big dinner somewhere. Well, looks as though I won't be going for sure, so my advice to you, Andoy, is that I would try not to get stuck in the same car as you know who! hehe...I'm j/j Oh! and you might be able to be on the team!~ We came in first last year...with our "all women...and one man team!" Hopefully this year, we'll have more guys on the team!

Cool! People always say good things about the UW taikai. It's really fun! Hopefully Moocow and the other SC peeps can make it. But yeah Ms. Kendo, actually i got stuck in the same car with FG two years ago.....not cool! As for me being on the team...I don't know! I have to make it outta the first round in my division first!

But yeah, it'll be a heartbreaker if i have to choose between The Strokes or the UW Taikai.......not! But seriously, hopefully the two events aren't on the same day!

I don't think the taikai is restricted to anyone except for kids, Moocow. Doesn't hurt to ask =P. What instrument do you play, Ms. Kendo ^_^?

Yup, April 10 is the official date. The invitations are being sent out by email right now as we speak, or so this person tells me. if you guys are really serious, then I'll ask him if it's okay to send sci one.

Hey, this may be a stupid question, but what does SCI stand for?
Oh an Nancy, I won't be going to UW, but I'll be there in August for the women's taikai! For sure! I'm sooooo looking forward to it! Some of our women members will be missing for the summer...but we should be able to make a pretty good team! I'm so excited....it'll be like a huge girl's event! I remember the last one, it was really fun! Hope there will be some women from Hawaii and California coming...it would be nice to see this taikai gradually grow!
But anyhow, I'm sure there will be many of us there! Ganbarimashou~~
Dorkus, I heard you got your 3 kyu~ Congrats!

Thank you, Ms. Kendo ^_^. Forgot how the name was thought of, but it stands for Southern California(n) Invasion. Is the concert more than a one day event? Think about the taikai when you're playing you're at the concert T_T. every note you play, you think about how you could've been out there whooping some oshiri. haha that means you'll probably be like thinking about is 16545645615 times =P. The taikai won't be as fun w/out you there, Ms. Kendo. August is definately too far away =O!!! Did the last womens taikai had the same female sensei as well?
