Before a practise, while in Seiza, we Rei to Joseki ni / Shomen ni, then Sensei ni, then Otagai ni.

After a practise we Rei to Sensei ni, then Joseki ni / Shomen ni, then Otagai ni.

Is this right? What do you do?

Many thanks

John

This. Rei after class done in reverse order to what was done before class. At least in my experience.

At one of my dojo: line up standing > seiza > mokuso > rei > stand > shinzen ni rei > back into seiza > sensei ni rei

At another dojo I attend: line up standing > seiza > mokuso > rei > shomen ni rei > sensei ni rei

At another dojo I used to attend: line up standing > shomen ni rei > seiza > mokuso > sensei ni rei

Same as Halcyon at the dojos I attend.

It varies a little bit from dojo to dojo, so if you are visiting just pay attention and follow along. Some dojo say "seiritsu", others say "kyotsuke", we just say "line up". Some say "seiza", others say "chakuza". Sometimes everybody sits at once, sometimes the sensei sit first and then the students all at once, sometimes the students sit one by one from senior to junior. We bow to shomen and then sensei and do it in the same order at the end, many other dojo reverse the order at the end so you bow to shomen first and last. Some dojos spread their tenugui over the men after removing it, others fold it up and put it inside.

etc, etc. It's not right or wrong, it's just the custom of your dojo.
