I would recommend Kendo: The Definitive Guide (http://www.amazon.com/Kendo-Definitive-Guide-Hiroshi-Ozawa/dp/4770021194) by Ozawa Sensei. It covers what you're looking for plus has a guide list & description of various waza. The diagrams can be a little confusing without proper dojo instruction, but then again Kendo can't be learned from a book.

Cheers!

Subscribe to Kendo World then, there's really nothing else in English that will expand much on that book.

Looking at a Far Mountain is good, for when you get to kata.

I like this series of four DVDs. They are very clear and you can view each technique from three different angles. Hidekatsu Inoue has also got an ace kiai :P

The only downer is they are pricey:

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I like to know, how useful is the book for a beginner Kendo: The Definitive Guide by Ozawa Sensei? Is there a preview I can consult on the level of complexity in the technique being taught?

I have seen some parts of the book on google books but it only shows the basic (putting on the uniform & armour).

I'm wondering if it would hold comparative technical information to say, a sport fencing book like "On Fencing" by Aldo Nadi.

It's a definitive guide.

Ozawa's book is pretty much the standard as far as an english language introduction to kendo book goes. Warners book is also good, but I think it has become a bit dated, as the audience that book was written for is not that same as ozawa's in my opinion.

In regards to the Ozawa book for beginners - a friend loaned me the Ozawa book, and I find it very useful as a reference. But imo, a book can only be just that, a reference. I don't think you can learn or really be instructed by a book. The only way to really learn is in the dojo from your senseis and sempais. I still do occasionally look around for other books, but haven't found a whole lot.

To the original poster - perhaps you could post a list of the book and videos you do have, so people don't post the same. I think others would also be interested in your library; I would be.

I have Warner's 'This Is Kendo'. I found it interesting for a solid background knowledge of the art, a comprehensive explanation of the history and heroes but it leaves the technique and technical lessons for the dojo. If you're after lots of practical information and 'how-to's' it might not be the right purchase for you.
