I bought several shinai from them with no problem. I can't speak to their bogu, though.

I bought the basic custom set. $294 or somesuch. Everyone who took a look at it was extremely impressed. The fact that you can get a 4mm bogu for just over 300 bucks is something you don't usually see

A few things regarding that choice. Please keep in mind that I've only just gotten into bogu myself, so all my knowledge is just what I've gathered from various sources, and will most likely be wrong.

1) The coloured do in that set is going to stick out like a sore thumb. Generally, the only people to wear that kind of armour are people who have been into kendo a long long time. If you wear flashy bogu, people will expect you to be able to back up that flash with skill

2) 2mm is generally considered too rigid for general use. The reason being at that tightness, the material doesn't flex at all, meaning it is less able to absorb energy. Online kendo even mentions they don't recommend the purchase of 2mm armour several times on their site 4mm is generally considered the sweet spot in terms of thickness.

3) For that price, I would be a little weary of getting non-custom fit armour. In terms of comfort, if your body is at all different to the average, you might be far better off getting some less flashy armour that fits like a glove, rather than a set of armour that looks great till it starts bouncing all over the place.

Given these points, I would recommend This set (http://www.onlinekendo.com/bogu.php?name=(BM-06)_General_4mm_Kendo_Bogu_Armor&kenid=26) instead of your original purchase. It's a little cheaper than the bogu you mentioned, but is less flashy, 4mm, custom fitted and still maintains the leather components.

Oops, sorry. I was at work so didn't exactly pay attention to who was posting the request. I figured from the post content it was your first bogu, please disregard my post :)

Really... I've never had any problems with my 2mm?

I can safely say my 2mm is just about as stiff as the day I took it out of the box a little over 2 years ago. The men is my main complaint the stitching is just too tight, I often get hot spots on my head from it. The kote is ok but something that was a little more impact absorbent would be nice. If I had any advice to give it would be stay away from the 2mm set, get something with a wider stitch.

Yeah, I would get a better quality 3 or 4mm set, rather than a ultra cheap 2mm set.

At that price point, I'd be looking at e-bogu's 4/2 mm set (http://www.e-bogu.com/Top_Quality_4_2MM_Bogu_Set_p/ank-ken-bog-ltd42set-.htm) or AOIs FD-5 (http://www.budo-aoi.com/kendo/bogu/instock_fd_5.html). I'm not a fan of the 2 mm stitching, especially in cheap sets but a bigger problem is that the onlinekendo set has cowhide kote palms. You will find that those stiffen up and eventually tear as they get wet with sweat and then dry. Both the E-bogu and AOI sets have deer leather palms, much better.

If you order from AOI, make sure by phone or email that they actually have it in stock, otherwise you may be in for a wait.

I think it would be great if you had a golden do and a dragon embroided bogu to show off your skill and almightness.

Depends on materials and construction. The current trend is leaning more towards 3-4mm, with better materials and stitching techniques that will offer more comfortable and lighter bogu that protects as well, if not better than your typical cheap 2mm.
Even in the descriptions they go on about the lack of quality of the Korean leather, which is probably not the only material they had to compromise on, in order to get that very low price.

How about this, (http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/samedo634/58983784.html) close enough?

No 2mm just refers to the stitching width, the tighter the stitching the more cardboard like the gear is going to be, in general. If you're just getting into bogu you're going to want something that's soft not something that's hard and ridged. Not to mention stitching width has nothing to do with quality, if you want a really good set try the Chiba machine stitched, or Mori. They're more expensive buy I can just about guarantee that you'll be happier in the long run.
