View Full Version : Writing on your Shinai
Missingno.
17th November 2009, 06:19 AM
I've noticed that a lot of people like to write things in Japanese on their shinai. I did a search on this forum and got a helpful thread about writing your name in Japanese, but I want to know if people write things other then their name.
So if it's not too personal, would you mind sharing what you write on your shinai?

My sense of decorum prevents me from elaborating on what would be a brilliantly witty comeback.
Not that that's ever stopped me before.

That's quite unfortunate.

For the most part, it is to be able to tell which shinai is yours. I write my name on my shinai(s).

I write my name on mine... no reason to write anything else, since my kote are covering it.

'Saw some have the shinai's weight written near the tsuba and shinai #1 or #2.

Why only that side?

You don't HAVE to write it there. But that's traditionally where the name is written, usually in the spot between where you would be holding the tsuka. I believe it comes from the custom of swordmakers signing the tang on the omote side.

My name's on both the omote and ura part of the tsuka-gawa, cuz people keep nicking my shinais by mistake! grrr...

It's not in Japanese, but a couple of mine say "Test! Not for official use!"
They have the official 14wkc stamp on them and I didn't want to take any risks...

I've got my name in katakana, the shinai itself identified with a kanji number and the occasional rune for luck and as an additional identifier. I write this stuff on the top where the leather folds over and has the cord threaded through it, right where the tsuba rests against.
I started off with three practice shinai, numbers one, two and three. Now that "good ol' number one" has departed this plane of existence, I'm wondering if I should number my next practice shinai as "number one" to keep them as a set of 1 - 3, or if I should number the additional practice shinai 4 and up and so on.
When I buy a second "good" shinai, do I number the one I already have, or do I get goofy and start to name them? Does anybody name their good shinai?
My god I'm procrastinating right now...

Ok, so from what I'm gathering no one really writes anything other then their name on their shinai. That doesn't mean I can't write anything else, I mean my hands are going to be over it during practice so it's not like anyone else will care, right? They are, after all, my shinai.

Ive only seen a couple of named shinai and i couldnt even be bothered to read it (so i guess it was their name) so i say if u want to write something on the tsuka of UR shinai then go for it, not that i have any authority though, just dont be painting it pink and covering it in glitter...

I write my shinai's name on the shinai. My favorite is "Vera" she's real pretty!
(I hope someone watched Firefly)...
