Why is that noone in the AJKC uses hiki waza? I've watched several clips and I don't think anyones ever tried any hiki waza, they just usually step back slowly and make sure they're not going to get hit.

actually, i've seen a few matches in the AJKC where someone has scored a point with hiki waza. can't recall the specific year or who the contestants were, but it definitely happens, though admittedly much less frequently than regular men or kote.

not too surprising though. it's pretty tricky to pull off a correct hiki waza. correct maai, good tenouchi, rapid retreat -- all have to be spot on for the judges to agree.

That's not true, they do. You just don't usually see them at the semi-finals and up stage, which is where all the footage usually starts.

If i recall in the 47th or 48th AJKF Sato Mitsunobu did a nice hiki do on Sato Makoto...or was it Miyazaki.

It was a beau-tiful hiki doh on Sato Makoto. Quite like the hiki-doh that Lim Kun Bae had on Sato Hiromitsu during the men's individual semifinals at WKC - although Lim did not get that doh point.

Anyway, while there are points won with hiki waza in the AJKC, I do feel that there are less hiki-waza than not. I personally attribute this to two reasons.

1. Hiki wazas are more difficult - both in getting an timing/opportunity and actually making a valid strike.
2. I personally feel that higher level kenshi feel as though hiki wazas in kendo are not really applicable to shinken shobu (or less fundamental to kendo) and do have a tendency to not use it as actively. But this might just be me...

It's true that many higher level people feel this way. That's why when they get into tsuba-zeriai, you usually just see them back away to normal maai where they can play what they regard as a more interesting match.

Hiki-waza are in general judged much more harshly than other waza.

I remember now, Sato Mitsunobu did a nice hiki doh on Sato Makoto. But yeah i remember that Miyazakis match too that was really nice.
