Just a bit of fatherly jiman, my son's kendo team had their first tournament of the year last weekend, and my son came home with the best record in the dojo, and although he didn't lose a single match they were knocked out by another team.

You can see the winning hiki do at about 1:50. (He is white).

Thanks guys. He is in the strictest dojo in the city, and the focus is much less on winning than proper reigi and kata. My son was ready to quit kendo this year until that tournament. He was having a great time for the past two years until last December, when he won his first match. From that point, he made it on the Sensei's radar, and practice has been much harder since then.
The win a week ago changed his mind though. He has another tournament this weekend, so hopefully the extra practice will pay off for both him and his team mates.

Awesome!
He is brilliant isn't he! How old is he if you don't mind me asking? I am hoping to start my oldest off in Kendo soon, she is only 2 mind, but it hasn't stopped me getting her legging it round her Grandparent's house waving a mini-shinai screaming MEN! Occasionally stopping to whack ji-chan on the head...

My son is 8. Just graduating from 2nd grade this month. He has been in the Kenshikai for two years now, and been hanging out with the group for a while. Every summer it is really hot here in Nagasaki, so the kids spend about 4 hours a day at the pool all summer vacation, and my son started tagging along at age 4.
I actually bought him a 1 shaku shinai when he was 2. He loved it. Get your daughter one. Never too young to start.
