Does anyone know exactly what Kattate Maki is? I know its something to do with the hilt binding but I can't quite tell what it is just from looking. Heres a picture for reference:

You can find other pics of Katate maki here: http://home.planet.nl/~sebregts/index.html and here http://tozando.com/eng/iaido/ka108.html
The construction of the maki can be found here: http://pages.prodigy.net/tlbuck/tsuka/tsuka.htm
I have read that it was a battle wrap and can be found on many WWII gunto although it does pre-date that (as seen in the Iaito replica at Torzando). I used to have a Katate maki wrap myself but beware as this wrap makes the Tsuka thinner than usual (unless you request the Tsuka to be made thicker), Japanese hands do tend to be smaller.

I think you might be able to get a thick Tsuka made for you when you order through ninecircles, but it might take 6 weeks or so to get it. The thickness of the Tsuka is definately something one should consider when buying an Iaito. I think this subject might have been already covered else where in another thread or at E-budo.
