Is there anything special about them besides the nice smell?
I got my first two smoked shinai without knowing much about them.
They sure do smell nice.

bio smoked replaces some of the water in the bamboo with resin, this helps prolong its life. They still break just as easily as normal shinai, but i've noticed they tend to splinter a lot less, and are more stable (regarding weight and moisture loss) over seasonal changes.

Why would you want to smoke it? Didn't you see the warning (http://davidisms.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/smoking_warning.jpg)?

That is for cigarette, for shinai, it is ok. You just have to puff and suck harder. In the end, it is just bamboo.

Is there difference between bio shinai and smocked shinai?
I have ordered Homura Kurogane from tozando.
Have anyone used it before?

I've only recently seen all the brand new smoked shinai of two dojo mates break within a few units of keiko. Praxis vs. theory I guess.

its the same as carbon, you can still break carbon shinai, it just takes longer.... if you have bad habits causing you to break normal shinai, no special shinai will fix it so it wont break.

If you can Brake Carbon shinai I think you are doing something worng like hitting with full force or like you have some what sadist kendo style.

My Kamakura bio+smoked shinai has lasted me 4 years just fine. Very little splintering, too. My disclaimer is that I only have practice 2 or 3 times a week, and our practices are fairly light, due to having few members. (though its held up great when we visit other clubs or go to shiai as well)

If you smack something with something else eventually something will break.
Seriously.. Carbon shinai eventually break... and if you don't watch them for signs of it when the break it's not only spectacular but can be very dangerous. If you don't think carbon shinai can be broken you might ask yourself why you can buy spare pieces.
The take (is that the right word for synthetic slats?) can shatter sending needle sharp slivers into and through the bogu. I recall reading about an injury in Europe where this happened when striking a kote and the person struck had severe wrist damage due to the shattered piece.
With carbon shinai, as with any shinai, you must inspect frequenly for damage. The sorts of damage you look for with a carbon are different than that of a bamboos shinai... you look for the layers to become delaminated and for wear in the plastic sheath that exposes the black layers. When that happens you _must_ replace the damaged stave before using the shinai again.
