Just curious what kind of home training people do, do you have a specific program with set times and number of suburi stretches? cardio? Reason I was wondering I was thinking about writing something solid instead of the chaotic method I use now.

Not that this is home training or anything, but I bookmarked this link and I think it's got some useful information in it, that is - if you have access to a gym: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Garden/6305/weights.htm

By the way this supplemental training in addition to what you learn from your Sensei not self teaching Kendo.

Older thread here (http://www.kendo-world.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2185), you might also try a search using "cross-training" or "cardio".

I just get up and go for a run first in the morning before eating cause it raises you metabolisim i heard, and its good.

Then i get home, stretch, practise with my heavy bokken lol i call it a table leg cause its bigger than a regular bokken, this it very good cause when i pick up my shinai now it feels so light.

Then i do my kung fu excersises, cause thats all i need cause i do it every day and it gets you very strong without being a big muscle head lol.

Yeah I have been reading too much bulk is bad for Kendo...I dunno mine involves right now

stretching
20 minute jog.
stretching incorporated with waza
general stretching
50 crunches
10 leg lifts
somewhere between 100-150 suburi (weighted wrists and ankles)
240 suburi (non weighted)
20 minutes of working on footwork.

does that sound good?

I do mostly cardio stuff like jogging, stair climber, suburi, etc. In response to Yowai's reply: I don't see how a small amount of weight will cause you a lot of damage IMHO but IANAD. Talk to your family doctor and see what he/she suggests to strengthen your aerobic fitness as this very important in Kendo.

I do 200 - 400 suburi every morning.

After work I go running or use the stairmaster in my gym. When the weather is getting better, I will ride my mountainbike after work.

I used to do some weighttraining in the past, but when I practice kendo, I am very tense and use too much power. So I decided to reduce my exercises on situps and exercises for the lower back, no exercises for the upper body in the moment. (Suburi every day should be enough to build power.)

I was thinking about buying a suburi bokken with more weight for a better workout, but I dropped that idea because I think it is better first to develop a solid technique.

Besides all the exercises all of you have mencion, another good exercise is mental, is imagine your self in keiko, training your spirit to challenge the other fighter spirit.

I think sometimes this is harder than my usual 800 suburi, half whith a normal shinai and other half with a suburito.

Try to do this in your free time, perhaps during the coffee break.

Cheers to all

no way im all for pushing myself to its limits.. adding weights on ur ankles and wrists will definitly make you faster, im not shure how healthy it is tho. but u know wut, dying because you pushed your body to its limits would be an honorably way of dying and theres not much ways u can die honorable these days. i dunno wut i sed but i think it sounded pretty cool

What I usually do for home training is just follow my friend's advice. "If you can't seem afford the class, just invent your own techniques."
