View Full Version : What do you carry in your bogu/kendo bag?

I'm interested in knowing what accessories wise individuals carry in their bogu/kendo bag. For example, I carry a talisman in mine, as well as an extra shinai cover. I've heard of other people carrying potpourri (defense against sweat! :) ) and would love to hear of other ideas.

Thanks!

In my bogu bag exists:
1 x bogu
1 x keikogi (folded)
1 x hakama (folded)
n x tenugui (where n is the number of tenugui, generally fluctuating between 1 and 6)
1 x state zekken (for motivation/inspiration)
1 x small towel (to wipe everything down post training)

This is what I normally carry, nothing special by any stretch of the imagination. Rather plain and boring if anything

I keep my bogu and the dogi at the dojo, so the extra stuff in my bogu bag is specific for the occasions that I travel with my bogu:

Heel protector, tabi, and wrist protector, so I can practice through minor injury while traveling.
Notepad and pen, to take notes during seminars.
Shiai rulebook, shinpan flags, tasuki.
Extra tenogui.
Extra set of himo for dou and men.
Extra disposable contact lenses.
I used to keep a xerox copy of my menjo, but I haven't gotten around to making one since I passed my last test.

Only been at it a little more than a year. I still don't use a keikogi/hakama, so I only take a shinai bag with me. I'm not certain how useful it will be, but I bring a pair of tweezers and a file with me in case splinters happen.

Talk to me Doctor... ;)

Like Arctic Blizzard I carry a ton of stuff in my bogu bag. In addtion to the usual stuff (bogu, hakama, dogi, wrist protector, 2-3 tenugui) I also carry a medical kit with bandaids, alcohol wipes, antibacterial cream, first aid tape, scissors. I have spare himo for both do and men, spare chichigawa, a few snacks ( I'm diabetic), sometimes a book, a knife, spare nakayui, some money, a pair of zori, spare tsuba and tsuba dome, comb, paperwork (usually)

Apart from the usual "essentials", which may or may not wind up essential, I carry a couple of cans of coffee in there. The vending machine sludge is pretty awful, most places.

In addition to the usual suspects, I usually have:
the kendo kata book
the Japanese-English kendo dictionary
long straw for a quick sip while still in bogu

Lets see, this is a long list,
Shampoo
Soap
Towel
Neosporin
Elastikon
Lighter
Sports tape
Scissors
gold bond foot cream
NSAIDs
Knife (pocket)
Knife (shinai)
Spare shinai parts by the dozens (whatever I stuffed in there from broken shinai since the last time I cleaned it out)
Spare himo
This is in addition to the standard bogu/gi/hakama/tenugui.
I also have copies of our beginners handout to give away.
A blank check, just in case i forget my pocketbook and need to buy some goodies.

Nothing too weird in mine, but I haven't had it for that long yet :D....Let's see, besides my bogu and uniform I have: Tenugui, extra tsuba dome/stopper, hand towel for wiping down bogu after class, sports tape, charcoal bags, clothes pins (for folding my hakama, makes it SO much easier after practice), and a piece of bamboo from a shinai. I use it to stretch my Do, it's just a little snug on the sides right now.

When practicing in my dojo I keep it as essential as possible:
bogu,
keikogi
hakama
tenogui
a change of clothing
towel
soap/shampoo

When on the road, I add
heel pad
achilles supporter
extra himo
notepad and pen
medical kit in the trunk (instant ice/bandages/spray bandages/ scissors/ saline/ tape / ben gay or equivalent )

If I thnk I will need them I may also bring the dictionary/shimpan rules/ shimpan flags...

i bought a new bogu bag recently and was clearing out my old one and found the following:

75cents (US) in change
a bag of nori (age unknown)
my papers for kakato protectors and ankle support for the 2002 US championships
my id number for said event
5 year old tape (the white athletic tape)
lighter with the fuel gone (evaporated most likely)

It was like a time capsule from 5 years ago

Now in the new one:

other than my bogu, gi and hakama
4 sets of tenugui
extra nakayui
extra set of men himo
extra set of dou himo
tasuki
kakato protector
ankle supporter
lighter
athletic tape

That's about it I think...

You forgot the 'Dubai edition' Monopoly set and the set of felt-tip pens...That's only on weekends. It's Tuesday.

I was going to write oodles of porn, but there is something fundamentally wrong about using the words oodle and porn in the same sentence, so I refrained.

Besides the bogu, Hakama and Gii? Well, I just carry a change of clothes and a roll of athlete's tape. And maybe a suba that is a size too small. Yeah, I travel light. However, I am not a wise individual. ;)

- Bogu.
- Elastic wrist splints. Not that I need them anymore. I just keep forgetting to remove them.

Hakama
Keikogi
Bogu
Lots o' tsubas (like 6, I think they just nested and reproduced inside the bogu bag as I only own two shinais and I'm clueless about how I got so many O.o)
2 tsuba domes
1 Tenugui
2 Deodorant spay cans :) (One for me, another one (meant) for bogu... fighting kote stench is a neverending battle)
2 Hairbands
40 cents
4 fluff balls
and.... that's it.

I now so rarely use my bogu bag that the only thing it currently has in it now is a semi broken wood bottom and a 5 yen coin. And some sandwich wrappers.

Yeah, mine's got a basketball and three rolls of sports tape.

DigitalDowntown

In addition to the typical stuff:

• pad of paper & pen
• sharpie
• dojo flyers
• tasuki
• federation member card
• hand towel
• ibuprofen
• nail clipper & emery board
• band aids
• roll of athletic tape
• heel protector
• x2 elbow compression wraps (minor tendinitis in both elbows and old judo/kendo injuries)
• boxing hand wrap (for when old, wild, shallow kote strikes that break your hand during shiai injuries make themselves known again)
• water bottle
• payday and/or cliff bar(s)

I don't carry any spare shinai parts in either my bogu or shinai bag unless I'm traveling, but I do keep an equal number of tsuba and tsuba dome to shinais with me. I also keep a leatherman tool with me, but it's not usually in my bogu bag.

Well I don't have my own bogu (using club bogu), so I just have my shinai in a shinai bag. Another bag which I carry my hakama, keiko-gi and tenugui. Another bag to carry 2 drink bottle, my uni books and phone, key, wallet etc.

hello...
since I get to the dojo by foot I try to go with the essentials:

1x bogu
1x hakana
1x keikogi
1x small towel (depending if Im going to shower in the dojo or Im going to shower at home, a wet towel can add A LOT of weight)
3x tenugi
1x extra tsuba+tsuba dome (I cant use standard tsubas becouse of an injury, Ihave to use the big ones)
1x pencil (always make sure it works propely)
1x small notebook (I always write what my sensei says)
1x micro size multitool (with pliers, siccsors, knife, file... to fix whatever is needed in the field) just in case
1x calf supporter
1x men protector pad

other than the extra tsuba, I dont carry spare shinai parts, but I always make sure that my shinai stuff is in a good shape, I rather buy high end quality leather parts and always make sure that everything works properly than risking a material failure in whatever part. changing or fixing stuff in the middle of the practice is just a waste of time. I also only use a calf supporter stuf an the extra men pad (to protect my braaaaiiinssss), I dont need any othe potection stuff, the better the bogu does the job, the less extra stuff you need.

ps: if you can carry a multitool with pliers in your bogu bag, DO IT, it would save your life one day.

oh yeah, I forgot. I also carry an empty 1 lt plastic bottle.
I fill it with water in the dojo before practice, I use it during practice, and after practice trow the water if there is any left. filing and unfilling the botthe is the very first and last thing I do when I get to practice, that way I make sure I maximize the time that I have water for whatever is needed and also to carry the botle empty when I travel so it doesnt adds extra weight.
