Out of curiosity, has anyone here ever sparred using kendo against naginata-do? I have yet to do so but it is something I want to do very much eventually (when I am much better, more skilled, and FASTER). Naturally I would be using naginata but if anyone here has done this what are some of the tactics you would use?

I am an occasional Naginata fencer... but I only ever get to fence Kendoka.
Personally I have never fenced Naginata as a kendoka, but on quizzing my opponent after a match I have gathered the following observations.
1) Get in close
2) Get in Fast
3) Lure them in
4) Tai-a-atari hard.. (just not against me ;) )
Basically though.. the best techniques are those that you use for all budo... fight with spirit and maintain zanshin.

Two years ago at a budo seminar in Guelph, Ontario, I had the opportunity to 'test' my kendo against Sachiko Yamauchi Sensei of the East Coast Naginata Federation. The occaision was a demonstration of a variety of arts represented at the seminar, so it was for the sake of the demonstration and wasn't part of any formal competition. At the time I was a 1kyu, so I hardly need to say that I got royally clobberred and otherwise stumped, but here's what she told me when I asked about tactics:
-don't be afraid to go for sune (i have no idea how)
-when you're at outter range where they have advantage, keep a very straight kamae, don't let it waver.
-make them play to your maai, get in close
-watch out, they can use both ends of their weapon (she'd nail my men and then my sune with the other end and it seemed as fast as a proper kote-men).
So basically I was cannon fodder and although I did my best to give a show and scrore a point i mostly was perplexed at how to get inside her range and fixed by her seme. A really fun experience though, one i'd recommend to any kendoka.

Emily, there's quite a few threads already dealing with kendo vs. naginata. Use the handy-dandy SEARCH feature and type in "isshu jiai". The Naginata section's pretty decent and worth a look.
In the future, please use the SEARCH option before thinking of starting a new thread. You may find the answers already among the 30,000+ posts on this board.
I have had the opportunity to play kendo v. naginata. It is obvious about the maai. The main point is to take away some targets for them. By using a wider (longer) stance for kamae you limit them to only one sune (shin/ankle). I was told that when they attack you should cover your head and try to "slip" the sune blow (i.e. sune-nuki-something). When they initiate the attack you can raise your forward leg to "slip" the sune, then at the same time lunge in to strike. Basically cover yourself while attacking at the same time. I am not certain if I am explaining this correctly??? I also noticed that the naginata player must adopt kamae from one side or the other so harai waza are also effective. Sometimes they will switch kamae from one side to the other which if it doesn't catch you off-guard is a good opportunity to attack. Good Luck.

I'm practising Naginata and had several times the occasion to fight against kendo. It's quite interesting. I think the biggest problem for naginata is mobility when kendo ka come near.
If I was a Kendo ka, with my knowledge of Naginata I would move close to the opponment strike a fast men, that the Naginata needs to defend strongly. Than I would strait strike a do, that Naginata are not use to defend in shiai.
Be carefull of sune strike while you'are attaking men !!!
